Mother of the year

OH MY GOD! Giraffes are well-known pedivores! They love nothing more than to snack on small children and babies! This mother should be shot for risking the lives of her children this way!

Oh wait, my mistake. Giraffes eat leaves. Nothing to see here.

You should keep your windows rolled up driving through such parks as it can be dangerous, but to worry about a giraffe is a bit of a stretch, as dangers go it's not really sticking your neck out too far.

Now if they were doing that in the monkey or lion areas, that would be stupid.

Ok, sure there's a possibility of the kid getting hurt. Maybe if the kid's fingers get nipped by the giraffe's teeth, but it's unlikely and there's zero possibility of something more serious happening. Mom gave the kid a lifetime memory. Mom is awesome.

Took this pic while I was in Namibia with a few other backpackers with whom I was standing on the back of a pickup. Basically the giraffe in question's mother had died hitting an electric fence surrounding a ranch farm, so this guy stayed and was rather fond of sucking the thumbs of all the tourists who went by.

Trust me, these guys are really not going to do anything to humans.

/bonus pic also taken perhaps a half hour before that one at a cheetah refuge-

//was also in the back of the pickup for that, but so long as you don't hop out the cheetahs think you're part of the vehicle and don't attack you

That's been addressed, and I've already admitted my failure.

Please see above.

Yes. Large herbivores are harmless creatures. There is no way a giraffe could ever freak out and hurt someone. Nope. And there is certainly nothing in a car that could be detrimental to a giraffe. If it decides to eat your kid's toy and choke, well that's just the circle of life. It's also in our best interest for the animals to associate humans in cars with food.

2012-05-07 11:52:40 AM
would imagine a giraffe has similar personality to a horse, most dangerous part of being around them would be standing on the wrong side of them when they spook at something.

Before reading the article, I expected that the mom tried to drive away with the giraffe's head stuck in the car's window, breaking its neck and killing it in front of her daughter. That would've properly rated as a Mother of the Year headline.

I just awwwwwwwwwwwwwww'd all over the place. These giraffes seem remarkably bold. I remember the ones at the San Diego Wild Animal park being much more skittish, stretching out their tongues as far as possible to get treats without getting close to the tourists.

/A Russian Elk kept following our vehicle and tried to drink the water dripping from the big igloo cooler :)

Maybe the people who run the park that allow their customers to feed the wild animals? It's the only thing I can think of, unless they charge for feed and encourage feeding them? I'm really at a loss too.

Andromeda: Trust me, these guys are really not going to do anything to humans.

Yes. They are far too gentle and harmless. It's not like they are known for kicking lions to death or anything.

/you know that long neck of theirs? It wasn't evolved to reach trees. It was evolved so that males could club each other.

This is a few miles from where I grew up.......

I was going to criticise the author for calling it the West Midland Safari Park when it is clearly the West Midlands (with an s) because that is the name of the county it is in.

And then I checked, and it is actually called the West Midland....which is just bloody weird. Why give it a name that isn't the same name as the county? Also, although it's quite close to the West Midlands, it's actually in Worcestershire, so it doesn't make any sense anyway.

Also, it's the same place where a rhino had sex with a car a few years ago:

I can't believe you people are finding this to be "cute" and "completely harmless." Giraffes have an 18-inch tongue. If you want that around your daughter, you are a bad, bad parent.

I wonder if this is the type of safari where people in cars are expected to hand a little food out to the giraffes and zebras and otherwise chill animals or if they were instructed to keep their windows down and their bodies inside at all times.

That tiny little detail is all that missing from me being able to call this mom either cool or brainless.

I think for a giraffe living in a safari park in england, that ship has already sailed. Lighten up.
