I was listening to BBC World Service at around 1:30 last night on the radio and the presenter was speaking with a journalist who was conducting an interview with the head of the Golden Dawn. The journalist was incredulous that the Golden Dawn (the far right Greek party) essentially denied that they were nazis. And when asked about the vaguely Swastika-esque logo, it was chalked up to pure coincidence. Midway through, the guy got a phone call and the ringtone was, according to journalist, something that sounds like a march from Nuremberg at the height of the Reich.

I keep thinking Greek Nazis are impossibly ironic, until I remember Germany formed military units of volunteers from places they were occupying and/or exterminating.

Between the dutch losing their government over failure to pass an austerity plan, Spain falling into recession because of the austerity plan, France ditching a government that wanted to push for austerity and this -- I'd say it's gonna get quite interesting for Merkel, Germany and the Eurozone.

I think it would be hilarious if, 100 years later, Germany ended up with hegemony over almost all of continental Europe.

They never really came close to continental hegemony; at its greatest extent Prussia included modern Germany and about half of Poland.

The governments of the world should join together, buy a large island, and let all the Nazis live there in bliss with their own form of government. They get to be weird and racist on there own, which would make them happy, and the rest of us normal folks wouldn't have to deal with Nazis anymore.

And then we could drop a nuke on it.

keylock71: They also give the Nazi salute, but prefer to call it a "Greek salute" because the ancient Greeks and Romans used it before the Nazis... Yeah.

In fairness, the Nazis did ruin a really awesome salute. Amongst other things.

monoski: Those who forget the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. Lets not forget Hitler was elected into office.

Funnily enough, no, no he wasn't. Even in germany there were enough sane folks to stop that from happening. He was APPOINTED chancellor after elections produced a deadlock between several parties, a position that did not exist in the government at the time. Even after he and Goering suspened civil rights and started banning opposition parties Hitler's party STILL couldn't get a majority in 1934

I'm sorry but the Greek debt crisis is the result of the Greeks overspending and having a completely corrupt tax department. I'm not saying that Goldman Sach's deals with Greece weren't highly suspect, but the Greeks ultimately farked up. It's their fault.

I mean will anyone take blame for anything anymore? Many people in the US still can't admit that the housing crisis was partially their fault. Now granted I think it was more the banks' fault because most people in this country have no fiscal responsibility, but still. People tried buying huge ugly homes with no money down and a crappy base of income.

I remember some Greek farker posting a long time ago that it was cheaper to bribe the local tax officials than it was to pay your taxes.

That assertion is actually true as far as it goes: the salute really does date back to ancient times. Not-so-ancient times, too; for example, Americans used to use it when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance (it was later replaced by the hand-over-heart gesture used today).

But then the Nazis ruined it for everybody. They were fond of corrupting ancient symbols, and while the swastika is the most famous example of that practice, the salute is another. Most people who encountered them had the good sense to abandon those symbols.

How can you tell if a Greek is polite? He goes out with a girl three times before sleeping with her brother.
