How did the dissertation committee understand his defense?

Good for him. Very nice Mother's Day present for his mom.

+1 for the headline subby

Good on him. Now if I could just scrub that "did you see the Acropolis?" quote from my mind although I am starting to think it is an urban legend.

Does this mean he is leaving the TNT broadcast? Because he sucks.

Wow Barry University a real university not like a University of Phoenix or ITT Tech kinda thing.

He did not earn a Ph.D. He earned an Ed.D, which is a different degree that does not have the same rigor as a Ph.D. It's more equivalent to a Master's Degree.

FYI, Shaq was able shoot FTs very well in practice, and only in games was he a poor FT shooter. So it wasn't physical(hands too big, bad mechanics), but mental. Just one of those things I guess.

Holy crap. A 3.8 GPA? I didn't know Shaq was that smart.

Take THAT Kobe!

He's an absolute moron. How the hell did he get a Ph.D.? Watching him on TNT Halftime Report with Ernie Johnson, Kenny Anderson, and Charles Barkley is like watching three scientists and the village idiot.

I just submitted a request through my university's interlibrary loan of a copy of his dissertation. Looking forward to a good read.

An Ed.D. is definitely more rigorous than a Master's program, but yes, it is less rigorous than a Ph.D.

There aren't a lot of people that get a Ph.D. in Education. It's like getting a Ph.D. in Social Work, good for research, but useless for most people actually working in the field.

He's smart enough, he just is not well spoken and his personality exacerbates that.

It's more rigorous than an M.Ed, sure. For actual research-based Master's programs, though, it's about equivalent. Any dumbass can get an Ed.D without doing any research (obviously, see Shaq or your local high school principal "Dr. So-And-So").

CatfoodSpork: I just submitted a request through my university's interlibrary loan of a copy of his dissertation. Looking forward to a good read.

He didn't write a dissertation, because he didn't get a Ph.D. He did a "project," and Barry says they aren't publishing it. TFA is rife with errors.

A Ph.D. In Social Work is taunting me. My long term plan is to teach at the college and grad school level. The Social Work Ph.D. is kinda pointless but I need it. Here let's train you for research, now go teach people!

No, it was not mental. Practice free throws are not like game free throws. Everybody is better in practice because they are taking many free throws at a time, not 1 or 2 here and there while playing 30+ minutes.

3.8 is pretty low for a doctorate. The grade scale in most grad schools is
A: good to okay.
A-: this had better not be your specialty.
B: Maybe you should try this one again.
C: Maybe you should reconsider grad school.
D: You should really leave.
F: Why did we admit you in the first place?

Possibly. But I would interested to know what his FT percentage was in scrimmages. That seems similar enough physically, but not mentally as it is still just practice.

Lot of professors with Jaguars and Mercedes all under three years old on that campus that all have one thing in common. Go figure.

I think it's cool too. In some ways. The fact that he cared about it at all I suppose is the main plus. But let's not pretend that having your professors flown out to you for one on one time is in any way equal to what a normal student might enjoy. Or that a professor who has been flown to hang out with an NBA superstar will have the same standards for his student when grades are handed out.

For a master's, perhaps. For a PhD it's more like this:

A: Are you doing enough research?
A-: This must be your area since it comes so easily to you.
B+: Not bad.
B: Good job, you passed, now get back to work.
B-: You had a lot of experiments going on this semester, right?
C: You probably shouldn't have taken this class.
Anything less: I know I said to concentrate on your work, but you should at least go to class.

Hmm. In my grad school, the grading scale was:

A = You suck
B = Fail

/kind of argues against grading, which is silly for graduate students anyways - like, what, do grad students need encouragement?

Depends on where you get it. A Harvard Ed.D. is more rigorous than a Ph.D. in Education at many other places.

Wait, so this is where we come in to make fun of a mulch-millionaire for going back to school to earn a degree? One that he did not have to and simply did for his own personal edification and as a gift to his mother....

Y'all are douchtastic.

/congrats to him for making an effort to better himself.
