Mushnick. I might have known.

He is the Post's designated Grouchy Old Fart sports columnist, and one of his pet peeves is the gangstafication of sports merchandise.

Jay-Z, on the other hand.....Is he the only NBA owner allowed to call black men N---ers?

Jay-Z profits from the worst and most sustaining self-enslaving stereotypes of black-American culture and I'M the racist? Some truths, I guess, are just hard to read, let alone think about.

The NY Post is a Murdoch publication, in case it wasn't obvious from the above.

I think their employment contracts dictate that you have to say something along these lines at some point during your career under them.

If there is ever a point in time where you step back to defend your comments and you utter the phrase "and I'M the racist"....it is probably safe to assume that yes, you did just say something racist.

And he clearly doesn't follow the NBA - Donald Sterling called them that before Jay-Z had a career.

Probably because they don't want you using the term for "one who nags" as a substitute for a particular racial slur.

But then we could just use AandSAA as a substitute. I've always felt the filter isn't for stopping us from saying what we want, but to keep the site SFW and not set off any filters.

No, but that seems like a stupid thought - people tend to choose franchise names based on things they think have desirable qualities, rather than picking things they hate or view themselves superior to.

I don't side with the guy's implied morality, but I don't think he deserves any heat for what he said. He disagrees with Jay-Z's use of those terms and penned something neither smart nor funny. i would say canucks are cool since it's a canadian team with the name. as opposed to a team in a city that to put it kindly hasn't been the best to native americans historically. also, "canunk" doesn't seem to be a slur. i guess my point is redskins is a little more hostile than say the fighting irish or even just the sioux (especially if the state is named after the sioux).

CSB(?) time:

So last year I started watching Boondocks. Hilarious show. Got through the first 2 seasons. On XBox Live there are about 5 to 7 guys I hang with on a daily basis playing various games. The majority are black. I mentioned this to them and they started quoting Boondocks. So I start quoting it too. Believe it or not, all but one found it funny/couldn't-have-cared-less. The one that didn't though still has me muted. Apparently saying "There's a whole lot of ni**atry going on in he-are" is unacceptable from that guy. Although I did this for a few days with this group and was never once told "hey, don't do this" by anyone including the guy who muted me.

/of course most of my other black friends still drop the N-bomb-ending-with-a all the time and that's cool

Lack of context is the whole point. Jay-Z doesn't just stand there screaming the N-word and biatch for the sake of it.

You can't give this guy the benefit of the doubt by considering his offensive comments in context when the very problem is that he is not giving Jay-Z the same consideration for his offensive language.

80% douche. In the bit immediately preceding the "racism" in question he's singing the praises of Breen and Clyde...and anybody who likes the way they call a Knicks game can't be a complete moron.

And the late-90's/early-00's trend of adding black to uniforms to goose sales with what the suits like to call the urban demographic was both cheesy and cynical.

It's just that Mushnick's been beating that horse for 10 years now.

I've always been fascinated by the NBAs unique dance with hip-hop culture and music. They love using it to sell merchandise, but do everything they can to avoid looking like they are without being seen as racist, or at least hostile. Of course Stern isn't going to be real happy this guy went and changed the tune right in the middle , but since he's not a player or an owner he can't do squat.

That complaint has always struck me as so weird. It is as if the person is saying: "I aspire to be the sort of clod from whom society expects crude racial epithets, but social convention thwarts me!"
To me, if people expected better of me, that would be a point of pride.

HotWingConspiracy: Jay-Z profits from the worst and most sustaining self-enslaving stereotypes of black-American culture

The Post sucks, the guy is a racist, but he's still right about this part. Some of the most extreme advancing of the stereotypes is coming from the hip hop community, and while they are quick to call others on it, most of them will not call out their peers.

Well, it has been 50 years since this logo was unveiled...
thompsonian.info

Different sport, and all, but there's precedent, should Jay-Z want it. Is there any doubt that a black-and-white Brooklyn replica jersey featuring the real basketball shield in front of two crossed handguns would sell out in a matter of minutes? The Brooklyn Gats has a nice ring to it.

My favourite bizarrely racist-seeming team name is the Atlanta Black Crackers-- seems like an oxymoron, given current slang usage, but it made good sense in context. That, and Kentucky's Zulu Cannibal Giants, who were sort of southern baseball's Globetrotters (though never part of an official league due to their tendency to play barefoot, use bats shaped like war clubs, eschew uniforms in favour of grass skirts and tribal paint, and clown around the field.

This columnist seems like a humourless git and a dour crank, at that.

No, but he does advance stereotypes in his own way. He is, however, far from the worst about it.

dont read the columnist, dont like basketball, dont like rap, dont live in the us, NEVER use the n-word.

but i have to listen to the music my kids listen to (rap) and I agree with the columnist.
if you use it in your music and day-to-day slang then the N-word is ok for all..
but its not is it, 2012 is so confusing.

2012-05-07 11:28:34 AM
Mushnick isn't COMPLETELY wrong. Jay-Z has published music with each of those words. The writer is more likely just out of touch and doesn't understand that, right or wrong, the effect of his words is different from when someone else says them - much like when idiot Imus got into trouble over his nappy-headed hoes" comment.
The N-Word and b*tches and h*es thing was most prevalent in the early 90's prior to Jay-Z and has been mostly in remission for 10 or 15 years. He's not wrong that those words and the culture that came along with it was a cannibalistic insulting marketing sham. He's just...really slow or possibly just trying to sell stuff.
