What I meant to say is that I'm trying to wean my body back to normal levels of caffeine consumption after being seriously jacked up for two weeks straight on a combination of extremely strong green tea, Amp, and Black Black gum, and I'm going through wicked withdraw. Like, I thought I was coming down with a really bad case of the flu because of the splitting headache and body ache, but then I drank some strong tea and it all went away.

You're probably better off switching to something like modafinil than consuming so much caffeine that it feels like heroin withdrawal when you quit.

Spoken like someone who has never brewed their own green tea. It's a more even buzz than coffee (coffee makes me jittery), but if you brew it properly, it will give you a major caffeine kick.

It tasted so dry and artificial, I can basically only describe it as what one might dream of when seeing Bebop and Rocksteady cross paths with mutagen, if that mutagen also corroded their eye sockets and perforated their kidneys profusely. It's quite horrible, is what I'm getting at.

Yeah, that about summed up the first week of winter and summer breaks when I was an undergrad. When I was a grad student, I was working as a teaching associate, which was far less physically demanding than working the jobs I was working as an undergrad, so I got away with drinking far less coffee. There were exceptions, of course.

Each semester as a grad student, I had to take part in committee reviews, which led to me drinking anywhere between 5 and 10 cups of coffee per day for two weeks prior to reviews. I wound up going to the ER as a result, one semster.

For withdrawal, cut down slowly and exercise. Many universities have gyms that are free for students. The treadmill was my best friend.

As for drinking green tea: you pansey. I had an electric kettle, a french press, and the tub of Trader Joe's coffee in my studio at all times.

I'm fairly sure law school is fueled on nothing but caffeine and alcohol. I did a computer science major as an undergrad and this is way worse as far as caffeine consumption goes, and unlike when I was an undergrad, I'm not 20 anymore.

My green tea drinking isn't remotely pansy, I have yet to meet an American who can drink it as strong as I make it--people can't handle the flavor unless I steep it for half as long with half as many leaves (I got hooked on green tea while living in Vietnam and drinking the tea that would be sitting in the teacher's lounge at the school I taught at, steeping for hours). When I drink coffee, it's usually the Vietnamese version of civet coffee brewed with a traditional Vietnamese single drip cup, and brewed properly that stuff is intense, even for someone with a serious caffeine addiction so I don't drink it very often.

On average, black tea has only a third the caffeine as a cup of coffee. Because green tea leaves are steamed as part of the drying process, it breaks down the caffeine, making it only HALF as strong (caffeine wise) as black tea. Thus, you'd need 6 cups of green tea to get you to the caffeine level in 1 cup of coffee.

That depends on how you brew your tea. Americans--even American tea snobs--don't ever use a proper tea leaf to water ratio, and then weaken their infusion even more by stuffing the leaves into a tiny tea ball or infuser basket that doesn't let the leaves release everything.

What you're doing is, essentially, the equivalent of the Chinese guy drinking tea from a big jar with a handful of tea in it over the course of the day. The thing is, though, that the tea is constantly refilled so that it's a lot more dilute than most people think it would be.

(at recommneded dosage, steep time, leaf size, temp, pressure, viscosity, brand, strain/blend/quality, lunar alignment, ad nauseam... they are not catch-all answers. They are not the same as Powerball odds, but more like USDA RDVs. An estimate based on a number of assumptions, at best, and at worst, more made-up claims to fill page 44 of your favorite periodical. Plus, did anyone state clearly how much of their preferred beverage they were drinking over what time period, under what blood sugar, pressure, BAC, sleeping and eating (if any) patterns...


That's why I hate when articles don't specify numbers and just say things like, "the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee." That tells me nothing, depending on the bean, the roast, the method of brewing, and the grind and amount of coffee used per ounce of water, the amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee varies wildly.
