I really don't get it.

Obvious jokes aside, anyone who has spent any significant time around dogs, and a specifically a particular dog can pretty much tell you what that dog is thinking.

It isn't that hard, they are very straightforward beings. All you have to do is pay attention.

With my mutt it honestly feels like telepathy sometimes, even though I know it's all body language, habits and occasional noises, from either of us.

It's honestly not terribly different from learning what another person is thinking.

Cats however, are an utter mystery, I think they don't want their pets to know too much.

Dogs have a genetic mutation that, unlike their evolutionary relatives, make them trainable -- they are pretty much programmed to learn human commands and cues.
