I'm a big fan of Gary Johnson, but this is one of those times where rules are rules.

We'll just have to change the law (if the Dems or the GOP would stop their bickering for this) and try again in 2016

well yes, but it's not at all surprising. neither Republican OR Democrat want a third party challenger to mess with their spreadsheet calculations.

that aside...I can't vote for Gary Johnson. I only agree with maybe 40% of his policy positions, and even that's something of a stretch.

I'm a fan of Governor Johnson as much as I am of Huntsman or Obama (agree about 60% of the time) and yet, I'm not terribly surprised by all this. It's a technicality, but it's still a dickish move on the Secretary's part.

2012-05-06 07:30:55 PM
FTFA: The Secretary of State's letter does not even try to rebut one of the Michigan Libertarian Party's strongest arguments, which is that under the U.S. Constitution and federal law, the November election is for the purpose of electing presidential electors. Presidential candidates' names appear on the ballot, not in their role as candidates, but as markers or labels for competing slates of presidential elector candidates. Michigan has a strong policy that the presidential electors themselves are the true candidates.

I smell a lawsuit to be filed this week.

Especially since it appears to be selectively applied, at least with regard to John Anderson's 1980 campaign, if TFA is accurate.

Well-played, indeed.

2012-05-06 07:37:03 PM
The simple fact is if you want to someday bring down the two party system, rules like this have got to go. Places with meaningful third and fourth parties (like say NY) often make their influence felt first by endorsing a mainstream candidate as their candidate as well and extracting concessions from him rather than running their own guy.

It would also let us see things again like the time when future Chief Justice Earl Warren, was such a centrist in how he governed in CA that he ran as both the Democratic AND Republican candidate for governor in his last term in office.

In all seriousness, I consider him the worst President ever, I tend to try to forget he existed.

This sounds like a rule designed to prevent a independent run of a renegade party member. It should be repealed because I can't think of a damn reason to prevent someone from running after losing a primary.

Given that a Libertarian on the ballot would mostly take votes away from the repubs, I can see the concern. On the other hand, there are a lot of both official and unofficial attempts by birthers/repubs, in Alabama, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, and elsewhere, to keep Obama off the ballot too (here's my personal favorite: "...the race of 'Negro' or 'Mulatto' had no standing to be citizens of the United States under the United States Constitution"[pops]), so the general theme seems to be "If you can't beat 'em, cheat 'em."

I thought Michigan was supposed to be one of those Libertarian-friendly places that didn't trust major-party Beltway sorts. Clearly Secretary Johnson was reading her Militia handbook upside-down.

What are we made of? Our fathers came across the prairies, fought Indians, fought drought, fought locusts, fought Dix... remember when Richard Dix came in here and tried to take over this town? Well, we didn't give up then, and by gum, we're not going to give up now!
