Think about what's in your average burrito. Now think about eating three of them a day.

feckingmorons: About once a year I drive there from Florida through all the towns that you hear such terrible things about. I never had any problems.

I had a neighbor two doors up who drove through every year on her way to her home in ecuador. She never had a problem, even though she was an elderly lady who was an easy target. She bought a used car (usually a subaru 4WD) and took a couple of months to drive from the US east coast to her winter home, and sold the car for airfair back to the US. She often made wide diversions to visit places and never had an issue.

Non-Hispanics making fun of Hispanics dressing like Japanese... makes the Non-Hispanics racists.

does that mean white people can go around in black-face now? are the black people who complain about it the real racists?

First of all, I was primarily talking about all the sharpie/pregnant/fat mexican comments, and second of all, the Japanese Gothic Lolita is a highly stylized form of Victorian clothing, so MAYBE THEY'RE THE REAL RACISTS.

And no, blackface is nothing like EGL clothing. What the fark are you smoking?

Bleh. There are many things in anime/manga (and related Japanese cultural exports), that I enjoy. Lolita fashion, however, is one of the things that just irritate me, because of its relationship to modern Japanese culture's* creepy insistence on conflating childish cutesy-ness with sexuality. I'm not just talking about pornography -- for example, it's creepy even when in some mainstream anime/manga series there are "loli"-ish characters. Not everything from Japan is worth importing here, FFS.

*segments of modern Japanese culture, anyway

It goes both ways, I know an archaeologist who used to work in southern Mexico, he was driving along on a rural road and BAM!!!... he kills a guy in the road. A group of people were about to lynch him until somebody convinced the crowd that the dead guy was drunk and suicidal and he jumped off an embankment and landed in front of the car on purpose.

A botanist I know was camping with another guy and two women. Some guys showed up, robbed them at gun point and raped the women, threatened to kill them but left after a while.

Another botanist friend goes to the Ensenada area almost weekly for research and has been for years, she's blond so she sticks out like a sore thumb, often goes alone and never has had an issue.

I agree. There's more than one otherwise interesting manga or anime I've put aside because of the creepy factor of the handsome 20-something looking hero getting jiggy with the 14 year old female sidekick.

Ick.

Big difference between a sexy woman in a skimpy schoolgirl costume and a woman with the body of a 10 year old dressing like a 10 year old with the intent of being sexually attractive.

I pay less for gasoline, drive on a toll road that includes insurance against damage from the road or road debris in the price of the toll, I can drive as fast as I want on the well maintained road without risking an expensive speeding ticket as the police have more important things to do, and then I visit friend and have a great time in Nuevo Leon.

Mexico is fantastic.

IIRC, it became less than hilarious when it turned out that it was largely a matter of homophobia, because the emo subculture there was felt to be too accepting of homosexuality.

Yes, that is me.

I also wanted to point out, that lolita fashion is not an Anime subculture. Lolita fashion is from Japan derived from victorian and rococo fashions. Basically it's a street fashion in Japan. It gets clumped a lot at Anime Cons. Also the dresses are expensive to upwards of $300 to a $1000.

If it was effortless and cheap, I'd say make yourself look however you want. Whatever makes you happy. But when you spend so much time and money on it, I have to wonder about your priorities in life.

Some people spend a ton of cash ricing out their cars.
Some people spend a ton of cash traveling.

I have a friend who would love all of those dresses. She was very put out, so to speak, when a group of us were going to dinner a couple months back and when they came to fetch me she kind of whined about my clothing. "But but but we're going to diiiiineerrrr!" Shiat! We get a White House invitation or something? She just really hates when people don't dress up for dinner and in her mind those would all be very nice outfits for dinner. Sorry honey, I am NOT getting dressed up to eat at the Dead Lobster. Or most other places for that matter.

An outlying observation, or outlier, is one that appears to deviate markedly from other members of the sample in which it occurs.
