chuggernaught: arrr_matey1978: One of the many great things about the movie was the pacing. There was always something interesting happening or about to happen. And then we finally got a big, long action scene with the New York stuff at the end.

And what else was great... finally, NO LOVE STORY! If nothing else, I hope studio execs realize a movie can be successful with both genders without having to shoehorn in some lame-ass romance plot.

There were love stories, they just were not shoved into your face.

Starks and Pepper, and of course two heroes were shown to have feelings for one another.

Agreed. IMO, the most emotional scene in the whole movie was JARVIS asking Tony if he should call Pepper. Even though you could barely see Downey's face in that sequence, he acted the fark out of it. Great, great job.

karl2025: Perfect super hero movie. Lots of humor, lots of energy, lots of SFX without being overwhelmed or sickened by it (Looking at you, Transformers!). The characters were played by actors who could really understand their characters and (Better yet) portray their characters in ways that people who didn't grow up with these characters could feel like they understood them.

How else did you expect them to make convincing transforming robots? Guys in suits and stop-motion don't really work for Transformers, especially when they're major characters with lots of screen time.

See that in his hands? Loki's scepter? The thing that can somewhat control the ~~Cosmic Cube~~ Tesseract? The same Tesseract that emits low levels of gamma radiation, which is why SHIELD asks Dr. Banner for help in the first place? The thing that Banner picks up at one point, much to the anxiety of the crew in the lab at the time?

Somehow, I bet Hulk's transformation on the Helicarrier wasn't completely "natural" by Hulk's standards. Loki was sitting in his cage trying to pull the Hulk out. He kind of succeeded (he probably wanted total control over Hulk, but that never works for very long.) This has been a common plot in many Hulk/Thor/Avengers/Defenders comics over the years. There was even a nifty animated DVD where Loki totally takes over the Hulk's body and pounds Thor into paste. So in the movie, just remember that when Hulk first goes nuts and attacks Widow and Thor, he had been handling Loki's scepter.

Avengers is going to do way broader business than TDKR even without Imax and 3D. The theater today was loaded to the gills with kids as young as six or seven. You're not going to see parents taking young kids to the way darker TDKR.

Not sure I buy this - Iron Man and The Dark Knight came out within weeks of each other, a TDK had a much bigger box office than IM. I don't see why we can't apply the same logic here.

Because Iron Man and TDK were two totally different movies from the two we're comparing now?

They are? I can't even imagine a more perfect movie analogy. The only better parallel possible would have been if it was Iron Man 2 against TDKR.

Agreed, just saw it about an hour ago. good stuff. But that one scene made the whole theater totally erupt to the point where I missed Hulk's line afterwards. And people clapped at the end, which I haven't seen in a while.

And I think the crew that cleans the theaters between showings must HATE the double post-credit scenes.

Did anyone else noticed the jab to the Bush administration with Fury's line about the some other things that were screwed up recently. Least I am fairly certain that was leveled at Bush Co.

While in line for my showing, I saw the crew lined up outside the door. 3/4 of the audience piled out. ~15min later they went in after the last of audience left. Knowing as they did that there was another full house to sit, the theater mgmt put 5+ people on the cleaning crew and they were out in ~10minutes...

During my showing, there was maybe 20 out of, what, ~500? people still sitting for the very very last scene, which was not relevant to anything, but it was still funny to me (after all the excitement) and worth staying for. cheers

I really love the theme of sacrifice in Nolan's Batman movies. It feels good to see Spider-Man or Iron Man find a way to have everything, but The Dark Knight was the first time I remember a superhero movie really saying, "You know what? You WILL have to surrender the people and the things you love most to do the right thing."

There isn't a way for Batman to have his cake and eat it too and that's actually refreshing in its own sad way.

Also I'd want Marvel to bring all their licenses back in-house before such cross-pollenation were attempted.

I love lines like that, where they don't explicitly refer to one side or the other. Conservatives can see it as a jab at Obama, liberals can see it as a jab at Bush, libertarians can see it as a jab at government in general, and all sides are equally right.

Huh, that was really interesting. The part about how Nolan's Batman "views self-sacrifice as the first and only option" seemed like a very good point, and one I hadn't considered. The more I think about it in those terms, the more I think Nolan doesn't view Batman's fight as a crusade, or a quest for revenge, or even a fight for peace, but as an extended version of Suicide By Criminal from a man who grew up with a massive level of survivor's guilt during his formative years.

IF you and I wanted to become heroes, we would be Batman. Vigilante types with technology, endless supply of income, and feared by people because of it. You have tons of excuses to why you are rarely seen, or you don't have bills to pay or anything like that.

If you and I suddenly became heroes, we would be Spider-Man. Normal people with normal problems, trying to come to grips with this great power we suddenly are given. For the most part, we won't have millions of dollars, we won't have access to the latest gadgets, we would just be people with powers. We have to juggle real life with our alter ego and somehow have a way to do it both.

I haven't read through the thread yet, but I plan on it after commenting.

My wife and I saw it today in IMAX 3D... it was one of the best films I've ever seen. Not kidding.

It was brilliantly done. Just simply brilliant.
Well-acted, well-paced, hilarious, serious, absolutely kick ass, and more fun than I've ever had a movie theatre.
That is not hyperbole. Forget just super heroes, this movie is how you do an action-adventure movie well. Intelligently written, "believable" action, etc. Just utterly fantastic.

And the 3D effects were convincing and didn't look fake at all like I was worried about.

We got there about 40 mins early, and luckily the IMAX had assigned seating, we got a great spot. If you're wondering and haven't seen it yet; it's absolutely worth braving the crowds for (but people like me find it more fun to be in the throngs watching it with the world).

I'll probably honestly go see it again with a buddy or something. Awesome movie. F*cking awesome.

I sat through that movie once, and it was the hardest thing to watch EVER. I love the 60's Batman series because it is so stupid, but Batman and Robin was beyond stupid, it was insulting to watch.

Maybe I'm truly insane, but I can think of movies from each of the past five years which have been better action-adventure movies than the Avengers.

2009 - Star Trek
2008 - Iron Man

Yes, I genuinely think those were all better than The Avengers. Flame away.

I think the important distinction is that these weren't love *stories*, they were instances of people showing affection and love. They weren't part of the plot, just the characterization. Big difference.

Yeah, his first movie was a dud (but I find it a guilty pleasure), but I always liked the idea and story behind him. Plus he's somewhat of an asshole while being a hero, we can all get behind that.

/was pissed that Howard wasn't in Marvel vs Capcom 3, Rocket Raccoon is cool and all, but Howard would have been so much better.
