yeah, well your boss is against it Joe. Talk to him, not the press.

tenpoundsofcheese: But then again, this is coming from the same genius who predicted 500k new jobs per month 18 months ago.

Liar. He said it said between 250K and 500K. Is there some reason you have to....

Ah, forget it. I can't do your act.

2012-05-06 03:56:47 PM
abb3w: Actually, no. It's clear to those paying attention. However, even some reasonably intelligent farkers don't read the caption closely when first going WTF.

I don't read the caption. I didn't need to. It's very clear from the graph that people are being grouped by decade of birth. I honestly do not understand how reasonably intelligent people can look at that and say, "It's ridiculous that people were polled about feelings toward gay rights in 1911," without then coming to the logical conclusion, "So ridiculous, in fact, that it's not what's going on here. Obviously people are being grouped by their decade of birth. Which makes more sense, so that must be what's going on here."

If, in fact, you are correct that intelligent people can do reach the first conclusion without coming to the second, we have a serious problem with our society. I am not sure if it's a matter education or a matter of so many "think tanks" spewing false shiat all about that smart people can no longer rely on their internal capacity to reason.

LeoffDaGrate: For the record, this is what the word cohort at the top if the chart means.

Gotcha. Apologies. Turns out I wasn't foolish, just ignorant of the "Cohort" polling data.

Don't let them fool you. "Cohort" refers to the relevant subdivision of the Roman Legion being polled. Data suggest that the more experienced triarii remain opposed to gay marriage, while the hastati in the first battle line are generally in favor.

2012-05-06 04:07:03 PM
The Obama Administration's failure to come out in support of gay marriage is a disappointment (albeit a foreseen one since he never supported it while running).

Yeah, I'm sure he and Obama have never discussed it. If they had, you would have heard about it on FOX, right?

I'm beginning to think that there are far more miserable people on this planet than there are happy people.

I don't care if a person wants to marry another person based on some voodoo god, does it poke, does it get poked, or some other damned reason why someone shouldn't be married based on something as silly as the aforementioned methods of preventing such an act to take place.

People that are happily involved in a relationship that wish to take it one step further to provide themselves some fact of their relationship to the state shouldn't have any problems. The happier you make people, then by proxy, people around them will eventually be happy for them or at the very least by some process become happy.

You miserable twits out there that think it is against nature, some book, or other unmentioned article of idiocy to have a marriage be between a man and a woman rather than the same sex should question your own marriage. Are you happy? I'm not talking about the happy that comes from winning the lottery or some form of chance. I'm talking about seeing a baby smile because the baby is simply experiencing a moment of joy in its brain.

This world would be better if people would just stop being miserable twits over issues that aren't really a big issue and focus on issues that really matter.

Lenny_da_Hog: Evolution is not goal-oriented.

A bit of an oversimplification.

However, it looks like one meme is being out-competed by another. Whether that's a good thing or not is a separate question.

It's also possible there may be further shifts in the background environment.

DeaH: I don't read the caption. I didn't need to. It's very clear from the graph that people are being grouped by decade of birth.

Then, you're apparently substantially brighter than average. I've been getting the reaction pretty regularly since I started using the graph.

Well, yes.

Skyrmion: Don't let them fool you. "Cohort" refers to the relevant subdivision of the Roman Legion being polled. Data suggest that the more experienced triarii remain opposed to gay marriage, while the hastati in the first battle line are generally in favor.

Biological Ali: Exactly, which is why said progress involves the funerals of the demographic that the Teabaggers belong to.

Well, that they disproportionately belong to. I've met a few Tea Party folk in the 18-25 demographic. (There's also some in the under 18 crowd; however, I've reason to expect some of those will shift if they ever get out from living with their parents.)

Of course I attacked the messenger. The messenger is an idiot. As is made obvious by his continued reliance on ridiculous "messages" like implying that Biden and Obama have never discussed the issue, as if he were a goddam fly on the wall present at ever meeting the two ever had and privy to every discussion they ever had.

How could i NOT call such a fool a fool?

I neither need nor desire the forgiving of fools.

2012-05-06 05:16:41 PM
This may sound off the wall, but could Obama be concerned about retaining his popularity with black moderates and liberals? The so-called NC Marriage Amendment (to ban civil unions and gay marriage) is on the ballot here Tuesday, and a tremendous amount of support is coming from black churches. In their view of same-sex unions as somehow a real threat to their families, some have so vigorously adopted a conservative stance (heh heh) on this subject that, to my mind, they could potentially be courted as single-issue voters.

I think gay marriage should be absolutely and completely prohibited in any case in which one or both of the partners identifies himself or herself as heterosexual.

That's right, I said it: Straight men should be forbidden to marry each other. Ditto for straight women. Just ain't right.

I am not sure if it's a matter education or a matter of so many "think tanks" spewing false shiat all about that smart people can no longer rely on their internal capacity to reason.

The second conclusion isn't the only rational conclusion to follow from "This is ridiculous". Another plausible and rational conclusion would be "Perhaps it's a poorly made exaggeration/falsification/extrapolation of the true data". Even assuming that these are the only two possible conclusions, the question then is which one we go with.

You find the your second conclusion (it must be referring to birth year, not poll year) to be far more likely, and I agree, but that's only slightly a matter of intelligence. It is far more a matter of what you've been exposed to in the past (particularly the recent past). If someone like LeoffDaGrate has recently seen a lot of charts showing fake/inaccurate/exaggerated/extrapolated poll results (and God knows those never show up on FARK), then the alternate conclusion about it being a fake chart might pop to the forefront of their mind. It may not just seem plausible, but in fact appear to be the most probable.

Similarly, if someone like you hangs out on forums where they run into lots of irrational people taking stupid stands for political trolling purposes (Also, of course, never seen on FARK), it will also skew their conclusions about what the most likely explanation is. Then when they encounter people who don't understand a graph, they'll decide that the explanation "They are being stupid and irrational" is more likely than "They are approaching a situation intelligently and rationally, but due to their context they still happen to arrive at a wrong answer here."

Both cases lead to someone making an incorrect assumption. But I doubt that either LeoffDaGrate or you are actually being stupid or irrational. Simply put, there are contexts where assuming that someone either screwed up and/or is being manipulative isn't a sign of low intelligence. If people are wrong, but rational and reasonably intelligent, then the error can be explained, they can accept it, and they can learn and move on. One person here has already done that, and now you have the opportunity to do so as well.

2012-05-06 10:29:08 PM
mmagdalene: This may sound off the wall, but could Obama be concerned about retaining his popularity with black moderates and liberals?

Plausible. Blacks tend to be less accepting of gay marriage than whites in most parts of the country, except the deepest south (which Obama has effectively zero chance to carry anyway).

Chimperror2: You just have to convince Obama now.

That's it's going to happen, doesn't mean that Obama should change his position.
From a political and strategic standpoint, it might be better for him to let Andrew Cuomo spend four years riling up the democratic base for the 2016 elections.

You know how you say you're suspicious? I am, too. I believe you now. Your first thought was the one you went with, and you went with it because there are so many trolls pushing bad data. I've noticed the same exact thing. I've noticed that some of those trolls are so persistent in denigrating good data and pushing bad stuff that it is clear they are paid trolls. That was certainly the case in the last global warming thread.

So, we are both more naturally suspicious. In my case, that meant that I thought you were purposely trying to throw confusion where there was none instead of experiencing genuine confusion that is just plain human. I apologize.
