Pizza soup and bologna sticks? No thanks.

If by "superior pizza" subby means "year, it doesn't taste that good but at least you won't poop for a week", sure.

2012-05-06 08:58:23 AM
Those are reasons to avoid Chicago.

I don't even have to read the article to know that it's about LSD, 'cos subby's hallucinating in a major way.

Also, piling every topping (and then some) known to man doesn't make a superior dog; the dog makes the dog.

Use a crap dog and you'll need all those toppings to mask the poor (or lack of) flavor.

2012-05-06 09:08:20 AM
Don't forget the handy downtown water access to Lake Stinksagain for corpse disposal!

2012-05-06 09:08:40 AM
Yeah, that piling on of crap does not make the hotdog. Just a swipe of Weber's mustard, or some picalilli will do fine.

There is a proper and polite way to eat pizza when in Chicago.

a) Order pizza.
b) Go ahead. Try a bite.
c) Politely tell your server that you would like a box for the pizza so that you may take it with you.
d) Exit eating establishment.
e) Hand it to the homeless guy sitting outside.

I honestly never understood why people hate Chicago so much.

I live in the closest possible apartment to Half Acre brewery. Unfortunately I think it is perhaps one of the worst beers I've ever tried. Now they're going to open a tasting room in that tiny space? Great, can't wait for even more cig butts all over the ground in front of my door.

/Just walk across the street, Bad Apple has 300 beers.

Chicago sounds fat

You know, we don't force feed anyone in Chicago. If you don't like a pizza or hot dog, order something else. If you don't like the city, don't come here. It's not mandatory.

2012-05-06 09:17:23 AM
Anyone know where to find decent hot dogs in Fairfax County, VA? All I'm aware of is Five Guys, and frankly their hot dogs are nothing better than what I can do myself and if I'm heading to Five Guys it's for a bigass bacon cheeseburger, not a hot dog.

2012-05-06 09:18:02 AM
Chicago isn't a bad town, but outside of taking guests over to sight see, I don't really have any reason to drive over there.

Deep dish and Chicago style dogs are okay every once in a while, but definately not a frequent thing.

I can get delicious food here in California. Only, without the horrendously corrupt police.

I guess I'll be in the minority and say I actually like Chicago.

Beats some other cities like say Dallas or Houston.

I'm walking distance from Half Acre and like them a lot so this is great news to me.

As is the fact that we apparently won't have any more tasteless out of towners mucking up my city.

How is this even debated anymore.

NY Pizza beats Chicago
Chicago dogs beat NY

Nah, you're just have a bunch of militant anarchists coming to town next week for the NATO conference to fark up the city (a la Toronto during the G20 summit).

Which really sucks for you guys and I do sympathize.

Probably. Although the anarchists surely don't help things. But the Loop is going to be a fortress just like Downtown Toronto was during the G20.

Yes, I know McCormick Place is south of the Loop but for some reason, I think a good bit of the protests will be closer to the loop.

Although I don't know how the City of Chicago is planning all of this out so I could be wrong.

Yeah. Half Acre is playing in the same sandbox with the likes of Haymarket and Revolution. Both of which have way more interesting beers and already well established locations with excellent food. They're going to have to try really hard to win over anyone not living in their neighborhood. Especially us suburbanites who travel for good beer and food.

Lived in Chicago over one winter...never again. There were times the sun never appeared for weeks on end, just a dull grey hell. And cold...cold unlike anything I have ever experienced. I lived in Colorado 15 years and the winters were no problem.

Chicago is a dismal, depressing place - but I did become a fan of the pizza - and it's pretty much the only kind of pizza I eat to this day, 20 years later. So there's that. I guess if I lived in that pisspot of a town I'd start trying to eat myself to an early grave as well.

That's the one thing keeping me from living in Chicago. The Summers are real nice up there though (especially compared to St. Louis which is essentially an outdoor oven during the summer).

I'm sure there will be since all of the government/financial centers are in the Loop. The Loop is also where they are creating the militarized zone and I'm sure there will be protests there just because they're upset about that.

A New York slice is fine as street food, but I don't understand why anyone would sit down at a table and order it.

And a Vienna Beef hot dog, by itself, is pretty much indistinguishable from Nathan's. Don't understand why New Yorkers think it's the height of sophistication to not put a lot of stuff on it. There are much more interesting sandwich sausages out there: Polish sausage, bratwurst, andouille. All have as much claim to being the "Chicago dog" as the basic hot dog.

New York chauvinism is the same kind you find in the Old World: An Italian won't use cheese from the town 50 miles away because.. well, it has nothing to do with how it tastes. It's just not what his mom did.

People from Chicago and points west of Chicago are more willing to try new things, and as a result usually surpass their competitors on the East Coast within a short period of time.

Well, good morning to you too. I guess you didn't realize I was being a little tongue-in-cheek since chicago can't really kick another city in the balls either.

And aren't you Canadians supposed to be polite?

The hot loose women, low prices for everything, beautiful architecture, and a shoreline completely devoid of sharks were all my first guesses.

The only thing besides the wind that sucks about Chicago is its entire concept of pizza.

FTA:

The head of Chicago's NATO Host Committee said Thursday she was blindsided by the federal government's decision to create a militarized "Red Zone" in the Loop to protect federal buildings in the run-up to the May 20-21 summit at McCormick Place.

The image of federal agents on downtown streets far from McCormick Place - in battle gear, weapons slung - three weeks before the summit is certain to have a chilling effect on those who live and work in the Loop. It also calls into question Host Committee Executive Director Lori Healey's oft-repeated message that Chicago will remain "open for business" during the summit.

On Thursday, Healey found herself in the difficult position of having to convince the public that a scary headline that blindsided even her is not an indication that the feds are bracing for weeks of trouble.

"A lot of us were surprised to read that. Obviously, the federal government doesn't consult with the city when they do this. Everybody was unaware of this," she said.

"It's common practice for the federal government to have protection around their own buildings. Everybody plans extensively ... for lots of different events. This is just getting an undue amount of attention. I would guarantee you they do it for all sorts of events. It's just that they decided to publicly release it."

Asked whether Mayor Rahm Emanuel was also blindsided by the Red Zone decision, City Hall offered a one-line response.

"This was a security decision and we were not involved," the mayor's communications director Sarah Hamilton wrote in an email to the Sun-Times.

Really? Did no one in the entire City of Chicago saw what has happened at other summits held in other parts of North America (ie: Toronto and Pittsburgh)? Did they not realize that in both of those cities, a large swath of the urban core was essentially went on lock down in order to keep the rif-raff away from the convention center?

You're the farking head of the committing planning this summit and EVEN YOU DIDN'T anticipate that?!?!?!

Hell, sounds like I could've done a better job planning for this summit than the people they have in charge of this now.

There isn't a big enough palm to put my face in after reading that article...

Really? I always thought it was because Fox News has spent the last four years incessantly using "Chicago-style" as a pejorative. I never thought any modern media conglomerate would burn a major city just because the president is black and used to live there, but here we are.
