meehaw: I used to respect the libertarian philosophy as being cohesive and consistent, but now I find it terribly unnuanced and prone to severely reductionist thinking, that tends to cut off the nose despite the face. Again, those friends of mine who are Libertarian cannot but get angry when politics is the subject, and that's the only subject that they want to broach. So that leads me to believe that they just like being angry.

The Libertarian response to every argument: "That's fine in practice, but in theory it just won't work."

Flappyhead: iawai: Flappyhead: Smackledorfer: Wow, formatting fail on my part there.

Chalk it up to frustration at iawai and his endless false dichotomys.

You infer that which I have not written.

No that is precisely what you have written throughout this entire thread. You have repeatedly stated your position(X) and put forth as the only alternative a "government monopoly"(Y)

"If you don't believe in X then you obviously only believe in Y" is the very definition of a false dichotomy. But by all means, keep denying you're doing it. That hole isn't going to dig itself.

You either like false dichotomies, or you are an evil person.

Here is the rebuttal to that one regarding stereotypes.

You'd think those bootstrappy libertarians would come up with something original rather than ripping-off the same cartoon.

Wow I didn't think this was possible but maybe Libertarians are worse with humor than even Conservatives.

hubiestubert: What bothers me is the lack of any sort of understanding of the consequences for implementing the policies that they say that they want.

I think it's that they use a deontological rather than consequentialist viewpoint.

As long as the rules that their principles dictate are followed, they're OK with the consequences all the way past the point where they're personally being sodomized with a cactus.

Are you telling me that Libertarians just biatch about rules that they don't like and refuse to obey those rules even if they were created fairly?

*boggle*

Like I've said, when you defend only "liberties" that affect YOU personally and don't really care about those affecting others it doesn't make you a civil libertarian it makes you a self centered asshole.

Libertarianism can't fix the most pressing problems facing the world today -- such as global warming, ocean acidification, and so on -- because libertarians are incapable of correctly perceiving the full consequences of their actions.

hubiestubert: My largest problem with the Libertarians is that the ethos that they espouse essentially leads to a form of Neo-Feudalism. While they may wave the flag of liberty and the strength of the citizen, essentially it all leads to a place where strongmen will be created, and their backers will have their protection, and everyone else can go hang.

All Libertarians imagine that they will somehow end up being the warlords and business tycoons, and not the serfs and raped villagers.

A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged.
A liberal is a conservative who's been arrested.
A libertarian is either who's been drafted.

I recommended the Libertarians to my brother, who is too sensible to vote for Romney and too racist to vote for Obama. I originally suggested Mike the Headless Chicken, but this guy is much better since my brother has a deep and abiding love of marijuana (he's 58). The way I see the current race is like this:

Libertarians: want to let the country fall apart and the world go to hell, on principle
repubs: want to screw over women, minorities and the poor and make the world safe for billionaires, on principle
Democrats: willing to sacrifice their principles to get things done, and then don't accomplish anything

If Ron Paul somehow wins the election, better melt down all your wife's jewelry because we'll be back on the gold standard in no time. If you've invested heavily in buggy whip manufacturers, you're about to make it big.

Isn't it about time these cranks should just go back to writing mean spirited letters to the local newspaper about issues they have no understanding of?

Trying to have a cohesive Libertarian Party seems like trying to get Atheists to start their own religion...it's an empty set. The Libertarian friends that I talk with frequently detest government, and therefore getting them together to agree on bureaucracy seems designed to elicit screams of "Get off my lawn!" and just make them generally ornery, and not much else.

I used to respect the libertarian philosophy as being cohesive and consistent, but now I find it terribly unnuanced and prone to severely reductionist thinking, that tends to cut off the nose despite the face.
