A man taking an honest look at his own political party to help correct it should be listened to. He was the Governor of one of the most populated states. He knows a lot about politics, marrying into the Kennedy family and all. And, if people were to ask Republicans to listen to him, maybe some of the bullshiat may be cut down.

We need to remind the Republicans who want to enforce ideological purity that if they succeed, they will undo Reagan's work to create an inclusive party that could fit many different views.

this right there means that the Governator can no longer be a Republican. he's weak, he's moderate...he's LIBERAL! and Real Republicans don't compromise, they terminate the weak.

Pretty much. The current leadership is driving folks from the party trying to get some sort of comprehensive "Conservative" policy that is actually a fairly radical vision and regressive in nature.

I still consider myself Conservative, but given what the party has as policy, I can't call myself Republican any longer. We need sane policy, not pandering to folks who would like to rewrite the Constitution...

Ahnuld reminded my dad of Eisenhower Republicans who were willing to sit down and work things out to find a solution to America's problems rather than whine and threaten to shut down the government or tax the poor to support the rich. He was able to work things out so well he was married to a Kennedy until he was caught acting like one. The republitards in the state legislature were his undoing. That and the term limits.

not to some members of the GOP. you are either with them or you are the Enemy. Even among the Democrats there's the view that changing your viewpoint is wrong. In their view, once a Republican always a Republican. that said,...the GOP are the ones these days with the ideological purity fixation.

What's important is our shared belief in the broad Republican principles of free enterprise and small government.

Small enough to be shoved into your vagina, should you happen to be a woman, but shouldn't be shoved in between you and a company, because THAT would be intrusive.

I was more commenting on the GOP as a whole, but these days a "pro-choice Republican" means they ONLY want to shove a wand up a woman's vagina and then make her wait three days for no reason to get a valid medical procedure. That's probably considered pro-choice.

You know those things are getting worse and expanding under a democratic administration too, right? I'm not saying both sides are bad so blah blah. I just think both sides really need to study their conscience before they cast a vote against the other guys, but not necessarily for themselves. I know this go around we don't have much for alternatives, but I think in the future we can force an alternative.

And it should be noted that Obama actually IS shrinking the government, when you count the number of public service jobs lost since the recession.

In other words, if you want to vote for a smaller government, vote Democratic.

I know the Democrats are just as authoritarian...but the GOP specifically goes out of their way to SAY that they stand for freedom...then signs us all up for TSA gaterape sessions, 'free speech zones' and mandatory FBI backdoors into everyone's websites and twitter accounts. that's what I don't understand...how can someone say 'i'm for smaller government' and then not 5 min later turn around and cheer for expanding government to watch US citizens who haven't committed any crimes...?

"Small government" has been narrowed to mean little more than lower taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations. The GOP is perfectly OK with massive, intrusive government in pretty much every other area.

He's liberal by default. Remember - to the GOP purists, there is ONLY 'liberal' and 'conservative'. if you aren't 'conservative' then you are 'liberal' and thus the Enemy. And the purists get to decide what constitutes a True Conservative. No dissent is possible, and you do not question their judgement ever, or you are declared unmutual.

I know and that bothers me, and it has caused me to distance myself from the political party I used to find myself kinda aligned with. Arnold here is trying to bring it back from the fundies and the social conservatives. I wish him luck but I think this November will have more luck Gibbs head slapping some sense into people than this article.

But also, I don't think the left quite got the candidate(s) they were voting for either. Which is mostly my point. We were sold on stuff we didn't really get.

this year our choice is going be be 1. an extreme right wing wacko with dominionist theocrat leanings and deep ties to corrupt corporations or 2. a mildly right of center democrat who gives invasive/authoritarian law enforcement agencies whatever they ask for....

I'd rather not have either one...but given a choice between the mild right of center Democrat or the wacko fundie christian theocrat....i'll take the Democrat and just keep encrypting my beef stew crock pot recipe and emailing it to Al Jazzeria.com.
