FTA: Sal Anzalone doesn't believe Meyer or his staff knew about Waugh or his past, but the fact that a convicted sex offender could get so close to student-athletes and recruits caused San Anzalone to fear for his son's safety.

What? His son could kick Waugh's ass no problem. Safety? No...he plays linebacker.

2012-05-06 01:36:30 AM
FTFA: Only later did Anzalone learn Waugh, 31, had pleaded guilty to five counts of possession of underage sexual content in 2008.

So what's he worried about? He's too old for Pedobear.

Probably the strangest recruiting story I have ever heard, and that is saying something. The picture is gold, though...

From the ESPN article:

"Ohio State had no idea that this guy was a perv," Sal Anzalone said. "They were totally unaware. Let's make that very clear. That's not Ohio State.

"But Alex was creeped out by him. He thought something was wrong. Alex wasn't going to get hurt. Alex could knock him out. But the point is, this creep shouldn't be near recruits."

So this guy gets a pic with Anzalone off campus at some restaurant, the father knows that OSU isn't connected to the guy, and he states that his son was never in actual danger, yet a brief encounter with a sex offender is a sufficient reason to decomitt? Short of keeping the recruits on campus at all times and keeping all fans away, there's really no way to prevent what happened. I think maybe the kid was just second guessing his decision already (which is why juniors shouldn't even be allowed to commit until their senior year to begin with). If he really wanted to go to Ohio State this shouldn't dissuade him.

Young Mr. Anzalone isn't trying out for the Pop Warner league, so I hope he wasn't feeling insecure in that regard.
What he probably finds awkward is that he's in the same picture as a person convicted of a particular type of crime, so there'd be the explanations forever.

Yes, because a 220lb linebacker, who will most likely be a legal adult when he actually attends college, has soooo much to fear from a pedophile. But I did see that he is a lacrosse player so he might like the attention of another guy.

From the linked article in the Yahoo article...
The sex offender, Charles Eric Waugh of Kentucky, has been reaching out to Ohio State players and recruits, personally and via social media.

He made contact with Anzalone during a recruiting visit to Columbus, Ohio, April 21. A photograph of Waugh with Anzalone and two other recruits was posted on a fan website, as were other photographs of the sex offender with a Buckeyes player and the school mascot, Brutus.

It sounds like something more official than just bumping into a sex offender off campus.

I'm not sure that school in Columbus did anything wrong, but perhaps they should have done more in this instance.

That boy will have serious problems on a real sports team.

I'm thinking this comes down to one of two things:

1) This young man was sexually molested by a pedophile as a child.
or
2) The concern is more around the fact that if tOSU didn't know about this guy's past and hadn't screened him out considering all the stuff with Sandusky at Penn State in the last year, have they missed screening out someone else that could cause a big enough scandal that it would destroy the program like what happened at Penn State, and screw up the kid's college football career. Maybe a little paranoid, but a reasonable concern for any program not screening fans and boosters they are allowing to interact with recruits.

The guy wasn't affiliated with the football program in any way. He was just a fan. Expecting the program to screen every fan is kind of asinine.

Holy crap. Hate to be a pedo defender, but once you're on the sex offender registry are you supposed to start every conversation you ever have for the rest of your life with "Hi, my name is Charles and I got busted for kiddie porn 4 years ago"?

And jjust for the record, the AoC in Ohio is 16, so even if this dude DID try to seduce the kid, it would've been legal. (Assuming Kasich hasn't outlawed gay sex yet)

Good call.

Knowing the facts makes such a difference.

Journos still failed to reveal the content, who are they protecting?

Why have standards fallen so completely, that there seems to beno directive to identify perpetrators/caught red-handed criminals and the particulars of their crimes.

We do know who stole all the money in the banking fraud (not the annually less than 5% sub prime mortgage borrowers).

Who could it be now?

We do know who sells crack?

Who could it be now?

We do know the sexuality of the priests who raped and conspired to conceal the rape of male child parishioners?

We do know.

Why don't the jpournos know?

More like a friend of a friend found out via social network the guy was a pedo (it wouldn't take much investigative work though, I mean look at him, the guy looks like a pedo), the kid was probably picked on for posing with a pedo, and it was more of the embarrassment than anything.

Is it a silly reason to decommit? Perhaps, but it's a division of football where kids get the shaft (pun intended) all the time from head coaches that leave for the NFL, or higher profile, better paying jobs, so meh, whatever.

There are allegations in the Penn State case that the administration was offering children for sex to wealthy donors and alumnae. This may be something similar.

Meh, when you're a top recruit, everything on those visits has to be perfect. If not, they'll just head someplace where things were perfect.

Go South, young man. Life is too short to spend half of your college career in terrible weather surrounded by chunky women in sweats and no makeup.

No, not similar at all. A guy who is not affiliatd with the university got some recruits to take a picture with him. Hardly scandalous and not even worthy of an article.

Earlier this week the pedo tweeted an inspirational quote to 130+ players, alumns and recruits. Some OSU fan site tweeted that he was kinda creepy tweeting 130+ 16-20 year olds and that started a back and forth between the pedo and the fan site who eventually uncovered that he was a pedo.

Beggin' you to touch and go

Ride into the analzone

He got you jumpin' off the track

Ridin' into the analzone

You'll never say hello to you
Until you get it on the red line overload
You'll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go

Out along the edges
Always where I burn to be
The further on the edge
The hotter the intensity

Highway to the analzone
Gonna take you
Right into the analzone

He hasn't signed anything, yet. Everybody signs on the same day, and even then, that contract is wholly unfair to the students. So, I have no sympathy for the University or the fans. If you take an athlete decommitting from your favorite sports team personally, you are a worthless human being.

Depends on how official the function was, and how much contact this guy has had over the years with the school. I'm not going to bash the kid, first of all. There's just a lot of unknowns.

I'm not saying there was a problem at all, but Ped State already got caught with their pants down. If this guy had some sort of "in" with the program, then there would be a potential issue. You can't just look at the story of this de-commit and say, "Wah, the kid doesn't want to go to THE school that I like. He must be a liar and a whack job."

You don't send out Brutus & the players to some random off-site event is all I'm saying. Schools also should have some idea about their boosters & hangers-on, along with their involvement with the program, as that school in Columbus found out during the Tressel termination.
