Even though they never do this, I think they might make an exception and do a "sequel" to this film.

What do you mean by that? Like, redo the movie with the same people? That's weird.

I think they are going to be really bold and turn it into a "series". All of hollywood will watch to see if this revolutionary idea succeeds.

Mugato: Carousel Beast: As fantasy movies, they were among the best ever. As Lord of the Rings movies, they sucked balls. Most every key point of the books were chucked in favor of invented crap.

I don't want to threadjack but there are a dozen Avengers threads right now so I can digress a bit and this sort of relates.

The LOTR movies were incredible achievements in many areas. I wish I was the filmmaker Peter Jackson is. But as someone who never read the book(s), there were some plot holes and a lot of plot points that seemed like deus ex machina (pulling things out of your ass with no background) That I would have gotten if I read them but no film should have required reading. And of course he could have used a tighter editor but that's Jackson and another issue.

A lot of comic book movies can be like that but the Avengers wasn't and not just because there were movies preceding it. It's because all the characters were relatable in some way and the script was tight enough so I didn't think, "Hey, why didn't that guy use that power to do that when he should have?". Everything just meshed well. No, I didn't and still don't know who the bad guy was who revealed himself in the post-credit sequence but I get from the audience reaction and from the gravitas of the scene itself that he's important so I get it.

And Godzilla sucked, no matter what it would have been called.

I disagree. As a fan of a lot of old black-and-whites from yesteryear, I though it [Godzilla] was a fun monster movie.

Look, I'm trying to give Jackson props for LotR - it was phenomenal cinema. It just failed as an adaptation of LotR. It missed so many core plot points for me to say otherwise. Hell, aside from the Ring, it missed the plot almost entirely.

/The plot being the transitioning of the world from the elder races to men.

Yeah and they touched on that really breifly when some of them went to "the Grey Havens" but for those of us who didn't know WTF that was, we were lost. I sort of got it but it seemed like a major plot point that was relegated to one of the 5 after thought epilogues to the main story.

As for Godzilla (and I'm in major threadjack mode here but once you start a conversation), the Godzilla movies always played it straight. Godzilla '98 was just so jokey and slapsticky. And the CGI wasn't up to par so it always had to be raining and/or nighttime to cover it up. I thought Rick Decard was going to roll up in his spinner at some point. But that was a long time ago. They should take another shot at it.

How can I put this...2012 Cobie Smulders is extremely pretty. 2006 Cobie Smulders is an epic inferno of hotness. The woman is seriously noticably less attractive than she was 6 years ago, and is still mind-bogglingly attractive.

Raucous applause for that scene in our theater.

The latest Godzilla movie (from when, 1998 or so?) was a travesty by calling itself that title. It's like the Starship Troopers movie; the only similarity the two movies had with the stories or movies before them was the name itself.

The LotR trilogy was just that; a trilogy of movies that took place with the same characters over a sequential period of time. Other movies have done that, notably the Star Wars trilogies and X-Men, with varying degrees of success.

The Avengers, however, was something new. Five other movies (Iron Man, Iron Man II, Captain America, Thor and Hulk) provided the background and set-up for an ensemble movie featuring characters from all five. You could watch just three of the previous ones (IM, CA and Thor) and have enough of the background to figure out what is going on in the Avengers, but if you watched all five it would be as if all the characters just changed scenes between their named movie and this one.

Reportedly, Samuel L. Jackson has signed up to do Nick Fury in nine movies. From my count he's appeared in at least cameo shots in 5 so far (IM, IM II, Thor, CA, Avengers), and there's supposed to be an IM III that he should appear in too, so that would mean there's three more Avengers movies to come.

I do wonder where War Machine was once the invasion got started and it was clear the Avengers needed all the help they could get. Maybe Hammer technology isn't all that reliable?

/great movie, will see again
//that's not a party

I've seen Avengers twice, in 2D and IMAX 3D. The 3D was great and was worth the extra bucks. The theater sound was bad in the 2D theater. When I go again this week, it will be the 3D version.

Yes, I'm all for a Black Widow origin pic, but I think it should have Hawkeye's origin too, and cover what they referenced about them in The Avengers. I think it would more of a Jason Bourne kind of movie, which Jeremy Renner knows all about now. Huge blockbuster? No. Smaller budget and profitable? Yes, as long as it stays within itself, plus some a few external Marvel Universe references.

As for comparisons to Dark Knight, they may be in the same genre, but really cannot be be directly compared as superhero movies. What can be said though, is they provide a stunning example of how broad the genre can be in both quality and mass appeal. Assuming Dark Knight Rises delivers, and I'm confident it will, it will become the best superhero trilogy, dislodging Spider-Man due to its weak third chapter. Spider-Man and Iron Man are still the best origin movies and Spidey2 will always rank as a great, great movie. Iron Man 3 starts shooting shortly and its buzz is already building, with the storyline looking be based on Extremis and having the Mandarin finally show up. What's not to love? Will it be a true trilogy, no, but it will further IM's storyline and build towards Avengers 2, as well as continue to cross pollenate with other characters and storylines.

The Avengers is really the end product of years of vision and work, involving five feature films. This was never tried before and kudos to those who had the testicular fortitude to pull the trigger on it. We can only dream about a Justice League project like this because DC could not pull it off.

Personally, I want to see these characters in their own movies: Dr. Strange, Namor, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Silver Surfer. It would be nice to reboot the Fantastic Four properly too. I did enjoy those two installments, but they were not on par with Cap, Thor, Hulk, etc. They deserve better. Many good to great movies to come, sit back and enjoy the ride, kids.

I actually thought that they didn't have nearly enough balance, CA wasn't given enough out of uniform screen time, no portman cameo? and as for my fav character, The Hulk, I think he was played pitch perfect... till the end. When BW is in tears when Banner yells at her, knowing if he changes she dies, and then later nearly kills her, and throws down with Thor, when every Avenger is desperate to make sure he doesn't change, how can they be so buddy buddy with him in the final fight? Joshing with him, 'Hulk? Smash!' *Cheesy grin* of fighting side by side with the gang, or saving Iron Man. The first half of the movie sets up he is a WMD, a bombiatching to go off, and then when he does he gets invited out for a post brawl dinner with the guys? Weak.

I've never read the comics so only have a vague idea of the Hulk and his backstory. But in this film I can accept that there is a huge difference between both events. Banner was angry with the team, and BW for bringing him there, when he first hulked out, so he lashed out at them. In the final battle he isn't angry with the team, but he decided to change, and target the aliens. It seemed perfectly logical and reasonable to me that his focus would follow his feeling when he turned. Also if you are angry you need a target. There were aliens flying around shooting at him. That's going to draw his attention.

And Hawkeye, Black Widow, Thor and Fury didn't get any out of uniform time. And I believe Portman was very pregnant during filming. At least Pepper Potts was in it, despite not being confirmed until very recently. And very nice she looked in those shorts...

I thought she looked better in the Avengers than she did in either of the two Iron Man movies. Girl got some nice legs.

Don't forget Loki's scepter. Remember the Tesseract emits low levels of gamma radiation, which is why they call Dr. Banner in to help track it. The scepter also emits some low levels of gamma radiation, and may have been a trigger/catalyst for an uncontrollable Hulk out.

The conversation he had with Stark, Stark tried to convince Banner that he could control the hulk, that the fact that he lived through the gamma radiation that created the Hulk, meant he was something special, and could control, or at least target the rage. If he didn't think he could control it, he wouldn't have put himself in the situation. Stark got through to him, which is why he wasn't surprised when he showed up, while the others were.
