overfienduglar: DamnYankees: I must say I was actually very annoyed I didnt get to see a trailer for The Dark Knight Rises in front of it. I thought the whole point of releasing that new trailer this week was to put it in front of the Avengers. Goddammitall.

How many times have you seen a DC ad in a Marvel comic?

\Showing I saw had the trailer, it felt out of place.

Same experience here, but people in the audience cheered for that trailer.

The Ang Lee Hulk movie blew.

The Norton Hulk movie was good, the fight scenes were great, loved the ending fight scene. I thought they got the tone just right having grown up a Hulk fan.

Taking my sons to see Avengers tomorrow, hope they enjoy it.

I dunno. Hundreds? If you think DC hasn't put ads in Marvel comics, you are just incorrect.

I recall how Tina Fey wrote in her book, Bossypants, that this happens even to the actually good actresses. She noted how some TV shows will wind up in danger of cancellation, or not being picked up, solely because some executive- inevitably male- will look at the cast and say, literally, "I don't want to fark any of these people." Boom. Cancelled.

Then explain Desperate Housewives. Or Sex in the City. Or The View.

I think you missed a word there, sport.

DamnYankees: Just saw the Avengers - can't believe there's no thread today on point, so I guess this comes closest.

It was good. IMO, it's the third best of this series of movies, behind the first Iron Man and Captain America. Some very good moments in the film, some very nice laughs, and the Hulk absolutely steals the show. But it's not really 'great' - I can't really see myself seeing it again. It was just...pleasant.

Solid 8/10.

Your opinion sucks. As good as IM and CA were, The Avengers is far and away better. I had my doubts, but the movie struck a perfect balance among all the the characters. It has been YEARS since I've been in a theatre where the audience howled in laughter and roared with thunderous applause . . . several times. Ok, I silently groaned at the flying aircraft carrier with a cloaking device, but that was the only real strike against it. All in all, The Avengers far exceeded my expectations.

An argument could be made that this is the best superhero movie ever. I can't wait to get it on Blu-ray, I'm gonna crack some walls in my house.

Please tell me that was really Janeane Garafalo who said that. I still have respect for Tina. TV shows are canceled because of ratings. TV executives lose their jobs very easily and they're not going to renew or cancel shows because of ass. She knows better than that.

That's really naive, dude, Teen Titans was at the height of its popularity and was cancelled by new executives because it was made by a studio not owned by CN.

While I really liked the movie, it wasn't "really" the Avengers w/o the Pyms. Especially Janet, Wasp is the only one who has been there the whole time, longer than Ironman, Thor, and Captain America. If they replaced Widow and Hawkeye w/ the Pyms, it would have been stellar. Widow and Hawkeye could have/should have been resigned to smaller side roles like Maria Hill was. Everything else was freaking awesome, but Widow and Hawkeye just felt weirdly "out of place." The Pyms would have been perfect.

The Dark Knight is a better motion picture than The Avengers. The Dark Knight is a crime drama on par with Heat, it just happens to feature some psychopaths, one of which dresses up like a bat.

The Avengers is the best comic-book movie, to date.

I think I figured out the number one thing which has prevented all of these Marvel movies from truly being great.

They don't have good music.

Every great film - and I think I can say this without exception - has great music. The only exception I can think of right now is No Country For Old Men, which does a brilliant job of using silence. But if you are going to make an action movie, especially, you NEED to have amazing music. And the Marvel movies have no good music. The only piece of music I can even think of in any of these films is Iron Man's AC/DC intro, and that's not even composed for the film.

Music is the soul of a film, and if it isn't great, the film won't have that soul. For the life of me I don't get how Marvel hasn't figured that out.

And he had picked up Loki's staff moments before the explosion so that might have had something to do with it.

I'm tempted to offer to bet someone some TF time that this scene is expanded on in some way in the dvd version.

The tension in the room rises inexplicably, the staff gives off low levels of gamma, and someone else on here described it as containing the Mind Gem.There was definitely more going on there than we got to see in the final cut.

I don't go to movies to be a film critic. I would, however, consider myself to be a 'fan' of film.

The Avengers was flat out fun. It's an entirely different animal to something like The Dark Knight and yet equally as enjoyable.

I'd like to add that I go to the theater quite often and I would agree with chewielouie that The Avengers showing I attended had more laughter and cheering than any film I've seen in recent memory.

Have you heard the theme songs for the Marvel Studios animated shows? The song on Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is enough to make people turn away from the rest of the show and not give it a chance (which would be a shame, because it's awesome).

I agree, its ok to categorize them, but I think we should at least do so properly.

Frankly, I think Iron Man is better than the Avengers, so I don't think there's really any way to categorize these movies to make The Avengers the best of its category, but maybe someone can.

Not saying TDK is a bad film at all, but it's not 'Gone With the Wind' or 'Casablanca'.

The recent Marvel films are FUN. If that's what you're looking for, enjoy.
The Nolan Batmans are NOT fun, they're dark and grim. If that's what you're looking for, enjoy.

Per Rotton Tomatoes

The Dark Knight 94%
The Avengers 93%
Spider Man 2 93%
Superman (1978) 94%
Ironman 94%
Captain America 79%

skinink: I know a lot of people hate reboots of recent movies, but I would rather see a reboot of DareDevil before Black Widow gets her own movie. DD was just played for laughs (that see-saw scene was just stupid). If a Whedon or Chris Nolan type director agrees to do DD, he has so much great backstory that they really could do him justice.
I liked Michael Duncan as Kingpin, I would like to see him recast in the role.

Mugato: Aside from the horrible playground scene, I thought it was okay. The character itself doesn't really interest me but that wasn't the movie's fault.\

Either of you seen the R rated directors cut? They cut a lot of the Elektra crap, spent a bit more time on his lawyering, all around a much better movie. Its a LOT darker too, theres one part after a night of patroling he hears a woman being raped somewhere just as hes getting into his sensory deprivation tank to sleep and hes just sorta like fark it, im tired.

/still has the playground scene though...
/and yeah, Michael Clarke Duncan was an inspired casting choice

I don't think you would be able to control it either if you fell down a deep hole caused by an explosion

AbiNormal: Puny God!

I've seen the Avengers four times now. The only screening I've been to that was not utterly stepped on by the howling and applause for what precedes that line was a 9:30AM showing that I specifically went to this morning to figure out what the Hulk says at that moment. There were only a dozen or so people in the theater for that one and I actually heard all the dialogue, though there was still plenty of howling and applause.

When I go again tomorrow, I will bring my Hulk hands!

It also took me a couple showings to notice that the Hulk has a decent coat of body hair, just like Mark Ruffalo, and also he actually does have body fat. He's still ripped, but when he bends certain ways, he also has a little roll of fat at his waist. I suspect that's also a lot like Mark Ruffalo.

Scarlet wasn't given THAT much to do in this movie. Some people seem to whine that she doesn't have a super power, but on the other hand she managed to get the better of a Trickster God in an interrogation, which speaks to at least some extreme level of competence in her field.

Just like Hawkeye, Black Widow could've used more screen-time somewhere along the line to set up the character. Everybody else has had a chance to learn who their character is, but it's pretty easy to see how deliberately vague they're being with those two.

Also, both Iron Man and The Avengers are superior films to the Nolan Batman franchise movies. I won't deny that the Nolan Batman movies are great, but they also have plot holes you could drive a truck through, and I don't think that works as well for what should be a more cerebral super-hero experience.

I'm not saying that because of my DC/Marvel preference. I *am* saying that because Robert Downey Jr. plays a genius philanthropist billionaire playboy eleventy times better than what's-his-face Growly McScowlerson, the guy who isn't Kevin Conroy; and because the Marvel movies manage to work in the fun and the funny along with the high adventure and drama.

2012-05-05 11:44:31 PM
If the Black Widow movie were basically Mission: Impossible or Alias for 2 hours, it would be good. She doesn't have her own rogues gallery, she's usually a supporting character in an Avengers-related series, and her non-Avengers stories are often with Daredevil. So her strongest suit, if you don't want to bring in Robert Downey Jr and Samuel Jackson for cameos (Though with this connected movie universe, they just might), is super spy/action/drama.

Oh and for the love of the gods, no origin story!!! No god damned prequels!

/It's hard for me to disassociate BW from Molotov Cocktease from Venture Bros.

verbaltoxin: If the Black Widow movie were basically Mission: Impossible or Alias for 2 hours, it would be good.

I suspect they're going to do a Hawkeye/Widow movie. They reference Budapest a couple times, which seems to suggest it's important history for the two of them.
