farkityfarker: Is it just me, or does the typical US presidential candidate who has a chance of winning seem to be pretty crappy?

pretty crappy is a very kind and polite phrase.

the players of the power game come from a world most cannot fathom. the finest and the best available on the planet from birth, as it was for their father, grandfather etcetera. raised with a mindset only found among their ranks, where entitlement dances with privilege. they have the finest tutors and attended the best private academies. their classmates are the sons and daughters of extreme wealth and power.

few family lines attain such status by being kind to others. they are taught to be merciless, backstabbing, willing to do whatever they deem necessary to add to the family wealth. while you and i may struggle and hope to one day buy a house or condo, those families have lived in enormous mansions for generations. they buy multi-story structures or build skyscrapers that will reap rental profits for years to come.

while you and i have to fight our own battles and go through life hoping we are not crippled or killed by a hoodlum the wealthy and powerful pay willing scumbags to do the dirty deeds. there is nothing below these people. as they grow into adulthood they become jaded, spoiled, having experienced more than most can imagine by the time they reach the age of consent. naturally they delve into whatever may interest or entertain them for the moment; no perversions or atrocities are beneath them. they are corrupt and greedy beyond the telling and their appetites will never be sated.

it was not so long ago when a college education was almost a exclusive right of and for the most wealthy and powerful children. commoners did not receive extension education, they did not have leisurely pursuits like golf and sailing, they did not drive luxury and sports cars.

another part of the most well to do is the members only privileges. social gatherings, balls, country clubs. they formed men's clubs and secret handshake societies closed to all but those of their high rank. all the while pulling the strings of once honest men from small town mayors to the office of the president, all to insure their power, wealth and holdings grew and grew. Citizen Kane was not based on fiction.

having the finest educations they surrounded themselves with the best minds they could find to further insure their successes. exploitation is gratification for them. they could care less that many died in coal mines, on battlefields or in picket/strike lines. we the unwashed are a necessary evil to work in their factories, get sweaty and buy their soap.

many years ago the most rich and wealthy kicked it up another notch by exploiting college students. research and development to discover new widgets they could sell being funded by money they could easily afford as they boasted of their supposed generosity. think tanks filled with the intellectually gifted working hard to unearth any and every what-may-come, all so those who own everything make damn sure well they keep it and get even more.

i've skipped over a crapload but i'm rambling. for the most part these men who look to sit upon the throne in WashDC (and elsewhere) are the best of the worst of humanity. rest assured their children will be even worse. and the lot of them are nearly clueless as to what the life experience is for you and I. our voices a Horton Hears A Who. our weapons are poorly made slingshots. we don't stand a snowballs chance in hell.

Don't tell Romney this but the proper response to the "Hey, you're rich!" comments is "Yeah, so?" He could then feel free to make a self-deprecating joke on the subject. Had he done that six months ago this would be a non-issue. Instead, at this point he's so desperate to make the "some of my best friends are poor" connection he's blatantly and transparently lying. It's sad and cringe-inducing, and reflects an utter lack of insight into human nature that in itself makes him unfit to be president. Similarly, his approach to criticizing Obama would play much better with the center if he didn't merely parrot extreme right wing talking points--after all, he already has those votes come what may--or make outrageous, Gingrich-esque statements ("We should be adding 500,000 jobs a month to the economy!") and simply stated what he's probably thinking: "Obama is an honest and sincere man, but he lacks the financial expertise to rescue the country from its current economic crisis. I on the other hand know how to do it." But he won't, because he's afraid of the consequences of honesty; because, like most repubs, he is at heart a moral coward.

You'd think, after over a year of "almost every day" meetings there'd be at least one article out there - "Local Couple Meets With Candidate - .

Of course it is believable. That is what campaigning is.
Meet and greets, handshaking, discussions, etc.

Do you read all the articles from every local paper? Why do you think it doesn't happen?
Do you think the press is notified that there is an off the record meeting so they can then interview the local couple?

Even you must have been embarrassed to write that.

Almost every day, three or four families, for at least a year, means there's 600-1000 ordinary people who've been at a Mitt meeting, and there hasn't been ONE story. You'd think his campaign would want to highlight an outreach program that dedicated and extensive.

If it were true.

Kerry would have raised taxes on his income bracket. .

which is why he voted for the 0bama tax cuts for the rich? Is that why?

During the 2010 Congressional campaign, Senate Democrats decided to punt on the issue, worried that a vote to end some of the cuts could be used against vulnerable candidates. But the huge gains Republicans made in the elections changed the dynamics of the issue. Certain of greater power in 2011, with the House in their hands, Republicans announced they would block all legislation in the lame-duck session until all the cuts were extended.

You are such a disingenuous ass.

The BushCo tax cuts for the wealthy are a large part of why the deficit is as large as it is and the GOP held those tax cuts hostage threatening to shut DC down.

Oh Mittens is significantly more disgusting than you portray him:

"I asked the firefighters I was meeting with, about 15 or them, how many had had to take another job to make ends meet, and almost every one of them had."

He learned firefighters had to take a second job to make ends meet. What will Mittens do if elected?

You don't know poor until you've been in the situation where you are wondering if you'll get to eat today and are worried that you won't be able to pay the rent. I've been in that situation and I was not as bad off as other people. At least I wasn't living on the streets.

When the dot-com bubble burst, there was 100 people with resumes as good (or better) than mine all going for the same few jobs. I couldn't even get a job in retail or fast food because they saw how way over qualified I was and knew I would be gone the first chance I got. I burned through my savings, 401k (with a huge tax penalty), and investments. I got work just in time to avoid losing my apartment and living in my car. The experience has made me paranoid. I keep money in the bank and my vacation time capped (almost 200 hours) because if I do lose my job that's a buffer that can keep be afloat for months.

Some rich asshole thinking he knows what it is like because he might have talked to a poor person can kiss my arse.

lennavan: Who cares if he won't name names, the bigger question is not who specifically do you talk to but rather "what issues do they bring up?" and "what policies do you have that address those issues?"

I don't actually care whether or not he meets with poor people ever, I care that he in some manner realizes the problems they face and I care what if anything he wants to do about it.

Poor people just want to vent, which Mitt lets them do, or at least imagine that some of their peers did, which is all they really need. so it would be inefficient to both tell the guy mowing the lawn that he should have brought his own damn water and then go talk to some idiot who picked his parents stupidly.

If poor people were smart enough to have decent policy ideas they would be rich enough to enjoy the sort of tax cuts that good policy consists of.

True. Unless he's talking to Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, that is.

or John Kerry, another candidate known for projecting that down home, everyman vibe that the proles eat up.

Sad thing is I think Kerry seems even more charismatic than Romney.

And I didn't think that was even possible.

Kerry isn't all that charismatic, but he's superior to Mittens in that regard because Kerry was at least genuine. He was a rich boring guy who acted like a rich boring guy. He didn't try to be something he wasn't, which is Mitt's downfall, IMO.

Kerry at least had the balls to fight for his country.

Of course he talks to poor people.

Poor people carefully chosen by his handlers so their filthy poorness doesn't rub off on him by accident.
