fark mint juleps. They are a disgusting waste of good bourbon.

Just drink the bourbon on its own, or maybe mix it with some coke. Mint juleps are shiatty drinks for tourists.

My father-in-law, who is from Kentucky and is a bourbon connoisseur, enjoys them on Derby Day. I fail to see how you can talk about "wasting good bourbon in one breath and then advocate mixing it with Coke in the next breath. A properly made mint julep with fresh mint, good bourbon, shaved ice, in julep cups, is a fine drink, and much better than dumping any quality bourbon into Coke. If I caught someone pouring my good bourbon into Coke, I'd throw them out of my house.

Got my bets in. Union Rags to win and Union Rags, Bodemeister and Creative Cause trifecta box.

I still say if they really want to spike viewership they should have 10 horses run clockwise and 10 counterclockwise. Pitched the same idea to NASCAR.

The only thing I care about when Derby day rolls around is photographing the Derby trains that show up:

Don't really care much about the race, I might watch it on TV, but that's about it.

So what's the deal with giving horses ridiculous names? Is there a purpose behind it, or is this just the type of thing that amuses the blue bloods?

Any steam locomotives on derby day?

I like a good bourbon sour. To make a good one, you have to slowly pour the Bartender's Mix out of the envelope.

I was hoping RJ Corman would run his Chinese QJ Steam Engine, but no luck this year. CSX has the F40s, RJ Corman and Norfolk Southern have F units, and Amtrak brings a train down to Union Station using their regular engines.

Each horse has to have a unique name, a name never before used. With as many horses as have been registered over the year, the only option is something goofy.

My point exactly... I had a Julep last night, because I wanted one, I was reminded a little later that the derby is running today, then I found out that they make the stuff by the buckets for the event.

Roll the mint into the Palm to bruise it and release the oils A half part simple syrup, two parts Bourbon, shaved ice, and a spritz of soda water

Alternatively? Muddle the mint leaves with table sugar, continue as normal.

All in all, I'm more of a Caipirina person, but I'm all out of Cachaca.

My general purpose bourbon is Virginia Gentleman. not the best, but its not bad either. And its made about 45 minutes away from me.

All the really good stuff is hidden away under lock and key.
