Florida Gov. Rick Scott said this week that banning handguns from downtown Tampa during the convention, as the city's Mayor Bob Buckhorn requested, "would surely violate the Second Amendment."

What a farking idiot.

I am for everyone in the GOP convention to be strappin' and maybe they'll sell firecrackers.

Yeah, sheesh, he totally should have said Section 8 of the Florida Constitution, because everybody in the entire country would totally have understood what he meant when he said that.

They're more afraid of evil libs pranking the candidates with their environmentalist water, than the chance of a Real American Mexican standoff to settle the question of candidacy.

Hey, you could put acid in your waterpistol. Then it would be just as dangerous as a handgun and presumably acceptable.

I like the firecracker idea, though. The repubs could save the rest of us a lot of trouble if they had a massive accidental shootout. We know what happens when a black guy shoots a white guy in Florida: jail. And we know what happens when a white guy shoots a black guy: nothing. What happens when two white guys accidentally shoot each other in "self defense"? We may be about to witness the greatest social experiment in human history; when derps collide.

What about cap guns? I think that would be more fun. You could pull out your cap gun and start firing and watch those old fat retards shoot themselves trying to get their guns out.

Just how would banning firearms downtown during the convention be a 2nd amendment viotaion? Here in NC you cannot take your shootin iron to a "public gathering". 100,000 people coming to uptown is clearly a public gathering. They are also planning on street closures. We like to roll out the beer trucks and other vendors when the streets are closed. Can't take your pistol anyplace that serves alcohol. I'm sure we are going to have many protests during the convention as well. It is against state law to take your pistol to a protest. Seems simple to me. Why would a responsible gun owner even want to take his gun into that environment?

If you think you need to be packing heat when there are going to be thousands of cops and secret service providing security you are a moran and probably a pussy. You are not doing it to defend yourself. You are being an asshat and should probably lose your CCW.

Question for American Farkers: I don't see anything in the second amendment that defines 'arms' as 'firearms'. Considering at the time of the amendment an 'arm' was a musket, and the 2nd now applies to arms as diverse as automatic fire weapons, it's clear that the definition is quite broad, and has nothing to do with calibre.

Other air weapons, like BB and pellet guns, often get treated as firearms. So if neither method of accelleration, type of projectile or calibre are guiding principles, should not the right to conceal carry a water pistol be assumed to be a protected 2nd amendment right?

YOU CAN HAVE MY SUPERSOAKER WHEN YOU PRY IT FROM MY COLD WET HANDS

That's largely a matter of the states. In Washington you could make a railgun or gauss rifle of any size and it wouldn't be a firearm or destructive device afaik. In Kentucky, and some other states, you can own virtually anything, even cannons, grenade launchers and miniguns provided you have the money and a deep abiding love of paperwork. I believe there's a company in Ohio that makes a rifle in a .951 caliber that has the muzzel energy on par with a WWI tank, and they got a special exemption so that it counts as a rifle and not a destructive device.

That about sums it up. Repubs are, at heart, cowards. They are terrified of living in a world where their moral superiority goes unappreciated and their privileged status as white Christians goes unrecognized. America is nearing a demographic crossroads where whites will cease to be an absolute majority and will simply be one more minority among many (albeit, by far the largest). The election of a black president provided a bitter foretaste of what is to come and his seriousness and relative competence stands in stark contrast to his lilywhite predecessor. It is esential to the conservative mindset that the first black president be a radical and a failure, even if they have to engineer his failure themselves, even if they have to suffer economically themselves by dragging down the country (debt ceiling crisis, anyone?) in order to prove his inadequacy. Not only are they willing to cut off their own noses to spite their faces, they want to cut off yours too.

That's a good question - what is the legally accepted definition of 'arms'? Has the supreme court ever issued a ruling stating that a firearm is considered a weapon, but a butterfly knife or a supersoaker loaded with tabasco sause isn't?

I am certain that advocates of enacting a special prohibition upon carrying concealed firearms within the city of Tampa, Florida during the time of the Republican National Convention will be able to demonstrate a need for such a prohibition through reference to an incident in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2008, as no special suspension of the Minnesota "shall-issue" based concealed weapons permit laws was enacted during the Republican National Convention in that year.

You have a bunch of people itching to carry guns. I support concealed carry, but the type to wear it to a convention where they know there will be protestors looking for trouble isn't the smartest thing. You have a bunch of people looking to mess with said convention goers. Will not be the least bit surprised if someone gets shot.

FTFA:Florida Gov. Rick Scott said this week that banning handguns from downtown Tampa during the convention, as the city's Mayor Bob Buckhorn requested, "would surely violate the Second Amendment."
"It is unclear how disarming law-abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law," Scott said in a letter to Buckhorn Tuesday, emphasizing the words "law-abiding." "It is at just such times that the constitutional right of self defense is most precious and must be protected from government overreach."

And a quick review of the Second Amendment: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

"...well regulated Militia..."

"...well regulated Militia..."

Yes, citizens have the right to keep and bear arms, but the purpose defined by the Constitution is not for self (individual) defense, but to protect the State as a well regulated Militia. How many citizens have received orders on how to use their firearms and on whom?

I assumed, that he meant that Rick Scott SHOULD ban guns from downtown Tampa. And I can't argue with that, if he holds that opinion I'm not going to be able to convince him otherwise, so instead I look for some subtle way to turn what is likely to be the most inflammatory statement in the thread into a joke, so I deliberately miss the point. But, whatever.

The republican party has put itself in a position where trying to ban firearms anywhere at all is going to be pretty much impossible for them. Well done. Of course noone should be wandering around a political convention with a gun but are you going to be the right wing politician who told the fat rednecks they had to leave their precious substitutes at home? Really? Its your party's signature now, a fat redneck with a holster.

I observe, nearly twelve hours after initially issuing the request, that no one has yet referenced any incident occurring in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2008 following the failure of a temporary suspension of recognition of the state's "shall-issue" based concealed weapons permits during the time of the Republican National Convention.
