Lych_Necross: My balloons never have this problem as I fill them with sulfur hexafluoride.

I prefer tungsten hexafluoride.

I want to know how in the HELL this happened. Confusing an inert gas that makes your voice sound like a chipmunk for a highly combustible one CAN'T be an accident. No one in Armenia is THAT stupid! :O

Now, why would you think they would be any smarter than people in America? Because they're not in America? The only reason it hasn't happened here--yet--is that no tank of hydrogen has made it to a party or political rally--yet.

That's right we'll show them we're going bigger!

Long, lonh ago I was the physics aide in high school. That allowed me access to the chemical closet.

Long, long ago the physics teacher poked his head in and asked how we were doing.

I had just huffed some sulfur hexafluride and my counterpart on the chemistry side had just snorted helium.

The moment he went on his distracted way I went "OW MY DEAR GOODNESS" about 3 octaves down and he went "Is he coming back?" about three octaves up.

And then we both lost it.

You get a show flame like that from slow combustion. If the hydrogen is stoichiometricly mixed with oxygen you get a flash and a bang but no fancy flamey effect:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoRggmnvBJU

Maybe that's what his friend was doing? If you need a really loud bang then you pretty well have to do it that way.

What idiot would use a stoichiometric gas mixture? Obviously if it were an envelope containing mostly hydrogen, the combustion would be slower, as interpenetration of fuel and oxidant gasses takes a brief period, and would thus produce a deflagration flame front rather than a supersonic blast of pressurized steam.

I can't laugh at anything involving burns. I know someone who suffered second degree burns when her apartment burned down. The pain she went through twice a day when they changed her dressings is something I wouldn't wish on anybody, ever. I am way more careful around fire than I used to be.

I really hope these people weren't hurt too badly and can heal up quickly.

7ft oxyhydrogen-filled balloon

It'll still make a yellow flash, just not a slower, crawling fireball whose speed is limited by the rate at which the hydrogen mixes with air. And the oxyhydrogen is hotter too, because there's no inert nitrogen diluting the mix if it's using pure oxygen rather than air.

Not too uncommon for someone to perform backyard electrolysis in a plastic jug and the O2 and 2H2 are never attempt to separate them. It'll still be lighter than air, about 2/3rds the buoyant force of pure H2. It's not a good idea of course, but all you need is a jug, water, a car battery, a couple of pieces of silverware for electrodes, wire, and some duct tape to seal the thing so it inflates the balloon.

optikeye: Something isn't right there. While the fark headline says hydrogen. That is NOT a hydrogen 'fireball'. Flames from hydrogen are not that color. Unless something on the surface caught fire coloring the flame or it was a mix of gasses.

I say this because I used to know a guy that owned a firework, pyrotechnic company. Who did the exploding "Pigs" for Pink Floyd's "Animals" tour. And was talking about how much of a pain it was to make it happen so they'd "blow up real good" with visual fireball..basically a custom mix of Hydrogen, LP gas, and other gasses and powders on the surface...for color. But it wasn't just Hydrogen, as that burns without color, but gives lift.
When you see the flames on the news reels of Hindenburg, that's the coating that's burning, not the gas.

There was this stuff made from a flammable material called 'balloon' coating the hydrogen.

Amazing as this sounds, but sometimes even a slogan as catchy as that can be difficult to remember when one is on fire.

/Plus, I imagine it doesn't roll off the tongue quite as easily in Armenian.

I like the fact that the reports say that they're blaming this on somebody smoking near the balloons......rather than blaming whoever decided to fill the balloons with a flammable/explosive gas, bearing in mind they were being held at head height in a country where smoking is a national sport*.

at least they weren't filled with acetylene. A friend of mine used to fill balloons with it and launch them with a burning toilet paper fuse. Big farkin explosions. This was good beer drinking fun until the wind shifted and blew one of the balloons back into the party. He lived in the country.

Burns without color you say? And you're basing that on, what, the fact that you just said it?

IF your balloon is a sturdy envelope, it will breach at one point and there will be a flame front there as hydrogen mixes with air to become combustible, and flame out like a torch.

But a thin latex balloon does something different. As soon as any portion breaches, the envelope disintegrates almost instantly, and the entire surface of the boundaries in all directions starts to mix with air in all directions. However, the initial point of ignition causes pretty violent turbidity to mix the entire volume with air very very quickly, so you get a fireball and a low-impulse explosive bang.

I do hydrogenation in my job (US Air Force Research Laboratories, WPAFB). When we started up our rig, we did a test burn to see how our IR camera would pick up the flames. Guess what? We verified that a pure hydrogen flame is NOT VISIBLE to the human eye.

What does "a pure hydrogen flame" have to do with "burning hydrogen mixed with 5-10% latex"?

It shows the color is due to the balloon, not the hydrogen. I was responding to the "Burns without color you say?" comment.

My guess is that they were filled with natural gas. That's what the fireball looks like. Hydrogen balloons explode much more rapidly. We filled a garbage bag with natural gas and rigged up a slow fuse. We let the garbage bag go and it got so high you could just barely see it, then there was a huge fireball in the sky. It was awesome, completely dangerous and stupid, but awesome. I should also point out that it was my dad's idea and he did participate.
