GHOST. That is all.

/2nd album should be out this fall
// Papa Emeritus & the Nameless Ghouls put on a hell of a ritual.
///If you don't already have it, get their debut album Opus Eponymous

She comes in colors everywhere: SilentStrider: I'm waiting for Clockwork Angels to come out. If the three tracks already released are any indication, this album is going to be killer.

/ymmv on if Rush is metal. Imho they are.

because Rush should be at the top of every list, and the Boobies of any Fark thread.

Yep...they should definitely be at the top of the overrated drek list.

Maybe if Rush would get that squeaky biatch off the goddamn mic they would actually be worth a damn.

Virtual Pariah: I think my next Metal Band (if I ever create one) will be called Goat Sea.
We'll do some Sea Shanty Metal...

Sea Shanty too mainstream, do Seacore. Here's haircut tip:

Deadwing: I'm anxiously awaiting Storm Corrosion, but after listening to Drag Ropes I'm not impressed.

it sounds like an album of King Crimson's "Moonchild." Luckily, it only resembles the first portion of that track, but it otherwise feels like every track is building up to something, but doesn't actually go anywhere. It's pleasant on its own, i guess.

Thanks for the answers all. I was only barely trolling, and was more really curious, the names and images really do strike me as just being overdone and silly. But if I take it more as a 'this is representative of the genre and simply tells users they're getting something that's serious and fully in-genre', it becomes less about people taking themselves really serious with names and pictures like that, and more...good advertising. Or natural camoflage.

Though to the two guys who told me to go die or something for daring to mock el sacred metal...you need to get a life. It's just music, you're more than welcome to mock me back. Oh here, I'll make it easy for you and tell you I like Rebecca Black or Fergy or...uh...I don't know, pick someone else you want to mock me for, I can't think of anyone more idiotic. Skillrex? If you can't laugh at yourself and admit to the tiniest margin that some of the stuff you like really is amazingly stupid...you're a dick.

Snapper Carr: Woods of Ypres: Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light

Secrets of the Moon - Seven Bells

Black Breath - Sentenced to Life

Sigh - In Somnophobia

Borknagar - Urd

St Vitus - Lillie: F-65a>

Psycroptic - The Inherited Repression

Desaster - The Arts of Destruction

This might be the best year in metal since the early 90's. You just have to dig a little to find the real quality

Thanks for links.

Threads like this are great sources of new musical influences.

Enjoyed Sigh, Woods of Ypres and Secrets of the Moon so far.

I can't believe I forgot about Borknagar coming out with a new album. One of my friends used to call me "The Dorknagar" because I listened to them so much. I adore Vortex's vocal style even though I usually lean more toward the growl and grunt vocals or even Operatic styles such as Messiah Marcolin.

I do have to wonder what Mustis is up to now. Anyone know?

Gojira - L'enfant Sauvage

Solty Dog: Accept - Stalingrad

Not a bad track on it.

Haven't heard it yet, but the guys on That Metal Show have said this is one of Accept's best albums, ever.

Alphax: Lacuna Coil's 'Dark Adrenaline' is pretty good, and the bonus track version has several accoustic covers of their earlier hits.

I'll have to check that out. I didn't even know they had a new album out, but then again, I live in a musical black hole when it comes to anything other than country, Top 40, or classic rock. The area's two rock stations fail miserably when it comes to introducing new music.

Ryker's Peninsula: Evilsmurf: Lumbar Puncture: Evilsmurf: Eluveitie - Helvetios Here is the single "Havoc". Metal with folk instrumentation, always fun.

I liked this, is the rest of the stuff in the same sort of style? I'll check out the rest later, after I'm finished subscribing to your newsletter.

Yes, the rest of the album is most certainly in that style. As is their other material. For bands along the same lines may I also recommend Finntroll, Tyr, Metsatoll, Korpiklaani, Turisas, Alestorm (who I believe are due to release an album this year) and Mago De Oz.

Moonsorrow

and Ensiferum.

Deep ass growly voice is apparently metal now. Sesame St crownd grew up to be hard core. Now that I think about it, rickycal78 said it best. It's cookie monster music.
I tried to look for new metal, but that's all I farking hear and it's more annoying than anything. fark if I'm going to wade through pools of shiat to find music I actually like.

But, to be fair, when new bands try to play the music I actually like, it sounds ironic. shiat I feel so old.

should we get off your lawn? jk jk

there's good stuff that isn't just incoherent growling, just have to do some digging. here's some off the top of my head i really enjoy.

3 inches of blood - people either hate them or love them. i personally enjoy cam's voice and enjoy the riffs even if it is pretty damn cheesy. would recommend the album "fire up the blades" for a first time listener.

unearth - pretty easy to understand screaming and enjoyable harmonizing guitar work. the first 5 tracks of "oncoming storm" is one of my favorite stretches.

a wilhelm scream - more punk than metal but the guitar work is pretty damn phenomenal. "ruiner" is one of my favorite albums.

between the buried and me - modern prog / metal. has cookie monster vocals at time but also some strong cleans. the album "colors" seems to be the easiest to latch on to at first.

periphery / tesseract - almost too sugary of vocals but awesome song writing and guitar work.

after the burial - moving away from the cookie monster style vocals. latest album "in dreams" started channel parts of pantera and bouncy nu metal riffs (not the radio friendly nu metal)

norma jean - "meridional" still is more hardcore than metal but an awesome record.

Between the buried and me is one of the few growling bands I love and its because they are so phenomenal in all other depts is why. There is literally no metal band like them (to my knowledge) Banging metal in to a country solo, to jazz interlude back in to a country solo and end the track with more facesmashing? Yes please.

Jeff check out "Disease Injury Madness" by them, its got frickin everything.

rickycal78: Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but it seems like it's getting harder and harder for me to find newer metal that I like these days. It seems so many metal bands do the barking dog type of vocals. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but most of the more modern metal bands out there seem to use it way too much. Whatever happened to, you know, singing? It is possible to still be aggressive without cookie monster shiat.

I came in here to find something that wasn't barking dogs.

Glad to see I'm not the first in the thread to mention Brendon Small's Galaktikon.

That description of the new High On Fire album makes me think they spent too much time smoking dope with Mastodon on their bus when they toured together a couple years ago.

Seconding Cormorant. Dwellings is one of the best albums of the last few years.

More heavy prog recs here.

Adolph Oliver Bush: You twat waffles who keep mentioning that awesomez jizztastic new album by one of the most overrated bands in the history of music do realize that they are not metal, right?

And Rush sure as hell ain't metal...not...even...close.

Rush may not be metal but is Headlong Flight metal?

if not why?

is Bytor and the Snowdog metal?

Cookie monster, cookie monster, cookie monster. Can we stick a farking fork in that phrase yet? I've been hearing that tired cliche for at least 20 years now. The vocal style is not going anywhere, plus there's tons of other bands that are "metal" enough that don't use that technique. Get over yourselves, your complaining about harsh vocals is like complaining that the distortion on the guitars is cheating.

I didn't know about this cookie monster shiat problem until I heard it on fark. I swear to god. I didn't know that this was a real issue.

"Can I get me some metal without that 'cookie monster' bullshiat!!?"

I was ACTUALLY taking this LITERALLY when I heard that statement. I seriously thought there was a metal group out there that was using the REAL cookie monster for their lead vocalist.

Later on, I put two and two together and realized that there are people that seriously take issue with vocalist that scream bark or whatever they classify as the 'cookie monster' sound. What ever it is I still don't get it.

I DON'T WANT TO. I am NOT listening to this music thinking COOKIE MONSTER!
BUT F)CKING JESUS CHRIST!!! Thanks a LOT!! I AM NOW!!

You farking bastards.

Deal with what? I know that Rush, in general, can be described as prog rock, but it appears that you do not know what metal is or have a very narrow mindset to the genre. I know it is just a name that is defined fairly broadly but next time, just deal with it. does not describe the music or the question posted in any way.

Alphax: dewright_ca: Ok, so no Nightwish Imaginarium, total failure...

Came here to say that.

Imaginaerum
was technically 2011, so I can see why they'd leave it off this list. The movie is supposed to be out this year though, and if the first teaser trailer (new window) is any indication, it should live up to the music's promise.

But no Epica Requiem for the Indifferent? List is FAIL without the voice of the goddess Simone Simons...

This got my interest and The Great Misdirect is really growing on me. The switches in style might be a detractor for some listeners, but I'm finding that maybe my metal can do with dash of jethro tull or a splash of king crimson from time to time.
