I'm sure you've all already seen it, but the "Hitler hears about the new Morbid Angel album" clip is one of the best.

Evilsmurf: Ok, a few alternate selections:
Abigail Williams - Becoming Here is the song "Radiance" off it. It's far better than anything this band has previously put out.
Eluveitie - Helvetios Here is the single "Havoc". Metal with folk instrumentation, always fun.
Swallow The Sun - Emerald Forest and the Blackbird. Cathedral Walls
Pallbearer - Sorrow And Extinction. An Offering Of Grief
Asphyx = Deathhammer. Deathhammer.
Nightbringer - Hierophany of the Open Grave. Lucifer Trismegistus

Love the Pallbearer cd.

a vote for Anathema "Weather Systems" (though they're not really metal anymore).
and OSI "Fire Make Thunder"

Niiice. But then, I'm partial to folk metal. And viking metal. And symphonic metal. And punk metal. Actually, most metal that doesn't sound like Cookie Monster deep-throating the microphone is cool with me.

Rev.K: HighZoolander: Maybe, that was a good album too. Death is this Communion is still my favorite album of theirs (but I haven't heard Surrounded by Thieves yet).

Both excellent. You need to have those.

They aren't quite full-on metal, but I love the band Torche, and their new one, Harmonicraft is f*cking amazing. It's only been out two weeks and I am wearing the SH*T out of it.

Reverse Inverted for anyone interested

I was actually going to post that exact song. Love the new Torche album a lot and cannot wait for the new Baroness to come out too.

Anyone here into really heavy stuff? Acacia Strain, Impending Doom, First Blood, etc...?

My personal favourite metal album this year is "The Serpent's Curse" by Pythia. Looking at Amazon, it looks like it's not been released in the States yet, as it's only listed as an import.

Their first album ("Beneath The Veiled Embrace") is available on Amazon's MP3 store, and well worth it.

If you like symphonic power metal, I really recommend them.

I can't comment on the albums, since I've never been a big metal fan.

But I want to ask anyway, what's with the names and album covers? Are these guys really trying that hard to convince people they're hardcore that they need to name themselves goatwhore?

It's just silly, at this point. Name yourself 'attractive and successful african american dick' if you want to be hardcore.

And all of the artwork seems to be the same.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Anyone here into really heavy stuff? Acacia Strain, Impending Doom, First Blood, etc...?

I've never heard of Acacia Strain, but I do like Impending Doom (if we are talking about the black/death/thrash dudes from Germany and not the US band by the same name). First Blood rings a bell a bit but I honestly can't recall enough about them. So they're either a lost treasure for me or a band I did not care for much.

I mostly listen to bands from the Nordic region with occasional forays into Germany, France, Brazil, Spain and Italy. My favorites though are bands like Carpathian Forest, Fannefjell, 1349 - things like that. I have been listening to the metal radio on Mikseri lately in search of new music from Finland and Estonia and some of them are very good.

I do like Hate Eternal and Cannibal Corpse as far as US bands go, though. I used to like Morbid Angel, but they've just gone downhill lately. *sigh*

Da fark? 12-15 years is "younger", now?

"Goatwhore" is an allusion to the Satanic nature of the music for which they are known. Kind of like Lord Belial's album "Kiss the Goat". They're not talking about you making out with your weird neighbor's pet pygmy goat, they're talking about embracing (so to speak) Satan. They are also a band with heavy Satanic imagery. It has nothing to do with trying to convince people they're "hardcore". Considering the music involved, those kinds of names are merely truth in advertising.

That's like asking a rap or hip hop artist what the deal is with their names. Why all the intentional misspelling?( At least I like to think it's intentional) Is it some really odd way of gaining street cred by showing how ghetto they are?

Or ask a country star why their names are so simple. What, are they trying to show how down home they are with simple band and singer names? Why not make up something crazy and memorable like pop stars?

You could go on for just about every genre of music. If you weren't trolling get a brain. If you were trolling go play in traffic.

They didn't have much choice. Goat Anus, Goat Bleeder, Goat Molestor, Goat Phallus, Goat Semen, Goat Vomit, Goat Vulva, GoatPenis, Putrid Goat, shiat Goat, Arch Goat of Sodomy, Goat's Ass Trumpet, Hallowed be thy Goat, and Super Heavy Goat Ass were all taken (along with about 100 others).

Been on a Mercyful Fate kick.
Also have enjoyed En Vivo!.

I think it's just kind of traditional and part of the image. It lets the listener know what kind of music they're getting into before hearing it. Metal gets hit a lot for hair metal or corpse paint. But it's really not much different than a Country/Western singer wearing a cowboy hat and boots even though they aren't a cowboy and it's not Halloween, an Opera singer wearing a viking outfit, a rapper blinged out holding guns while living in a gated community, goth bands that wear all black with white powdered faces even though they aren't Bela Lugosi, or female bubble gum pop singers dressing like schoolgirls even though they can't even read words let alone music, and on and on...

It's the US band that I was referring to... some people call it "deathcore" but that's a silly name that none of the bands self-identify with. First Blood is more of a hardcore band with metal influences. Basically just heavy, drop A tuning, with lots of breakdowns.

Here's the Acacia Strain

Impending Doom

looking forward to the new Baroness in July too, that one has potential

rickycal78: Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but it seems like it's getting harder and harder for me to find newer metal that I like these days. It seems so many metal bands do the barking dog type of vocals. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but most of the more modern metal bands out there seem to use it way too much. Whatever happened to, you know, singing? It is possible to still be aggressive without cookie monster shiat.

You've got it all wrong screaming lyrics at the TOP of your lungs is for bands with blonde hair. For death metal you want to scream from the BOWELS of your lungs (new window)

Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage
Storm Corrosion (not really metal, oh well)
Bereft - Leichenhaus (on it's way as I type this)

The Lamb of God album sucked ass. Replace it with Cannibal Corpse and you have a decent list that a new listener can get into.

Now where's LOC to point out that the best releases so far come from bands who only release 50 copies of an album, on cassette?

2012-05-04 11:24:03 PM
Lamb of Gods album was pretty solid. The problem is that their catalog is all pretty high quality, but they don't really take risks, so it kinda runs together.

It's good to see all the Eluveitie love here, although I would recommend avoiding the album Everything Remains. I was pretty worried about the direction of the band after that one. Helvetios is awesome though, maybe the best one.

Still there's a long way to go this year. Here's hoping we see the new BtBaM this year. I seem to remember reading there's a new Finntroll in the works as well.

Ryker's Peninsula: I'm sure you've all already seen it, but the "Hitler hears about the new Morbid Angel album" clip is one of the best.

Saw the clip and had a good laugh. Then I listened to the first two tracks.

Alright, that's cute, Trey. Now give Al Jourgensen his demos back. I've heard "99%" and he desperately needs them to salvage the project.

Any "Best Of" list without Sigh's In Somniphobia album is a complete and total failure. Best metal album I've heard in years.

Would also add:
- Pallbearer - Sorrow & Extinction
- The 11th Hour - Lacrima Mortis
- Elysium - Wires of Creation
- Thy Catafalque - Rengeteg

/Love Wood of Ypres' sound...shame they also have most ridiculous, inane lyrics I've ever heard.

Just saw Meshuggah on tuesday. Flawless and a great light show. I think it could be a bit higher on the list but the new album wasn't all that groundbreaking although it was really good. Dragonforce can farkoff. They used to be epic metal(and slightly noisy) but they de-evolved to garbage. No sort of musical reason to it. Just wailing guitars and over dubs.

Lamb of Gods new album wasn't that great either. It didn't have the highs the last album did (Reclamation) but it certainly didn't have the bombed out lows either (Set to fail). Just felt like they were treading water but at least most of it it pretty catchy and enjoyable.

Haven't hear 3 inches of blood yet but they always crack me up. Also need to pick up the new Godforbid.

Haven't heard the rest of the bands so who knows. Im pretty picky with metal. I like screaming but I cant stand growling no matter whats going on in the back ground I just cant get past vocals.

List fails massively without Iced Earth's new album Dystopia. I wasn't interested when Matt Barlow said he was leaving, but when I heard that Stu Block was taking his place I admit I was curious. (Stu has perhaps the most versatile voice in metal.) He knocked it out of the farking park. It's pretty kick arse power metal.

The music tab should really come back because too many people incoherently find there way into threads like these that don't even really like music or even understand why certain people like certain types of music in the first place all because they are tied up in the entertainment tab.

I Find myself stumbling in all drunk on the 2 Pac (I call him 2 Pac) and Kanye West threads all lost and shiat, believing I will be able to fathom what the fark people see in that music. I try to join in and it gets sad. I mean, Ima person TOO ya know.

dewright_ca: Ok, so no Nightwish Imaginarium, total failure...

Came here to say that.

I have some earlier Dragonforce albums, but I've not been keeping up with them lately.

Lacuna Coil's 'Dark Adrenaline' is pretty good, and the bonus track version has several accoustic covers of their earlier hits.

Even if there are no more metal albums this entire year, the new Meshuggah album means 2012 is a good year for metal.

Epica's 'Requiem for the Indiffernet' also came out this year, though I don't feel it's quite up to their usual standards, for some reason.

I feel you; I mean, who among us hasn't stumbled into a 2 Pac thread after a few too many? There's no shame in that. Hell, I'm sure some people get drunk on purpose just for those threads.

But metal is serious business, that people take seriously. If some people would rather get drunk and piss on our hospitality - and you can't piss on hospitality! I WON'T ALLOW IT!

You wanna get rough with me? You wanna show me that you don't like the choice of this house for our vacation by going on a hunger strike? Well, I'll accept the challenge. But just remember when I was your age, I really did suffer from hunger. We'll see who gets through this, but just remember I've got more practice than you. I'll see you tomorrow.

I'm not particularly enamored with Heritage either, but I hope Wilson's songwriting chops have done good things there. Grace for Drowning is well worth your time if you don't already own it. (assuming you do, given your FARK handle ;) )

phedex: Koloss gets my vote.

I'm enjoying it also, I think it's a better start to finish listen than Obzen was. I'll be heading to their show on 5/19... saw them quite a few years ago with SYL opening, and was pretty blown away by the performance they laid down.

I really didn't like the one from their demo at all, but the song from the new album is vastly better!

The first two minutes or so felt much more like smooth jazz (and reminded me of Keiko Matsui) than metal, but it's a really interesting song.
