Bathia_Mapes: Via Infinito: He'd have to weigh like 300 lbs.

I didn't do any calculations, but I'll accept your answer.

According to the article the kid weighs 44 lbs.

That's like 50 stone

Bungles: Came for fat people claiming BMI is nonsense because it doesn't work for Olympic weight-lifters.

I used to run height/weight checks on Army Reserves soldiers attending various schools. We had one guy come in who was maybe 5'8", but stocky and muscled like you wouldn't believe (but not in a 'roid way, more just one of those husky European heritages and a lot of weight lifting). He technically failed the standards, but I'd be surprised if he had more than 5% body fat total. That was more or less when I was introduced to 'fudging the numbers' as a way of life.

In case anyone is curious there was only one person who absolutely obviously failed and I believe they still let her stay, because they'd already spent money to get her there. It was surreal.

Kids do not grow at one steady rate. It is completely normal for kids to gain weight first and then shoot up. The body prepares for a growth spurt by increasing apetite. If you catch a kid right before a growth spurt, they're going to be a little chubbier than they normally are. It's temporary.

How about, instead of focusing on BMI in children, we take crap lunch out of schools, and put gym and real recess (running around on big climby things) back in.

3st 4lb is actually 46lbs (1st is 14lbs)

The US CDC growth charts puts a 4yr old in the 50th percentile at 36lbs, and put 46lb off the cart (the 99th percentile). His weight is the average weight of a 7yo.

By math alone this kid should obese, but judging by the pictures there's a fair amount of shenanigans going on, he looks too tall to be a 4 yo so either they giving us BS about his age to get in the papers, or he's just a really farking tall 4yo which would account for the extra weight.

I think that is the most important thing. I think we would have revolted if they would have not had pizza day or chicken nugget day at our school. But then again we only had those at most once a week.

I still get cravings for a square of that sheet pizza from time to time. Big soft floppy crust with a few chunks of a pepperoni type substance, and a smattering of dried out crusty cheese type substance.

Bungles: Came for fat people claiming BMI is nonsense because it doesn't work for Olympic weight-lifters.

It doesn't work for anybody. It's not a valuable calculation for anything at all. It doesn't tell you if you're fat, muscular, densely-boned (not big-boned, just high bone density), or anything that matters in any way, shape or form. BMI is completely useless.

wildcardjack: BMI is a LAZY LAZY LAZY measurement system. It's only height and weight.

I could build a quick visual scanning system to do a rough body fat % estimate. If you want anything closer you'd at least have to do skinfold, although I know there's a low cost ultrasound device that might work better to work large numbers of people.

I've got a bathroom scale that is pretty darn close to accurate. I've had a skin-fold test done (when those calipers are just lying around...), then checked my scale's estimate, and it was within 1%. Useful for tracking trends, even if it's not a precision instrument.

Full Disclosure: I'm a fatty. 6'1" 185# ~18% body fat. I'm one of those dense-bone freaks though, so if I drop to 150#, I look like that starving African child upthread. Yes, this means I'm also horribly out of shape. What's sad is that I'm actually much thinner than most Americans. Scary.

So maybe the letter got a number wrong? Big whoop, get a correction and stop whining.

2012-05-04 10:15:46 PM
Okay, so a handful of children are going to fall outside the guidelines.

That doesn't mean that informing parents that their kids are fatasses and to hold the fries is wrong. A politely worded letter to that effect is really the bare minimum that people should be doing to help fight the war on obesity.

sycraft: Is obesity a problem? You bet. However it is not NEAR the problem that being underweight is.

What the fark? Not only is it a bigger problem, it's also much more massively widespread. According to the CDC, 35.7% of adults in the US are obese. That's not overweight. That's full on obese. All the regular fat people are on top of that.

www.cdc.gov

By the time kids get to their teens you have about 25% of the population obese.

I was a teenage girl who was seriously concerned with body image, although I was never overweight. So I know exactly which societal pressures you're alluding to and how they lead to disordered eating, if not eating disorders, particularly for athletic young women. However, these pressures are absolutely not coming from health-related information. They come from saturated non-health media imagery of extremely thin women, and competition between young women to embody a certain kind of beauty ideal. Health-related media that encourages healthy eating is actually just as useful to teen girls who are trying to be underweight and are just as ignorant of healthy eating and activity patterns.

According to my bathroom scale - my 145" 5'7" ass has 21% body fat. Which is complete bullshiat. Its closer to 15. But I don't depend on my scale for accuracy in this area - I depend on it to provide trending (since cycling season began - I dropped from 23% to 21% according to the fark'n scale).

Not that this is really related, but I found out today that my very overweight doctor died this week, a few days after undergoing gastric bypass surgery.
So sad and tragic to see people caught in the weight loss cycle and being desperate to the point of surgery.

And here I was thinking that gastric bypass was relatively safe. Maybe it is and her result was a rare case.

Bummer. :(

My lean, beanpole son was always near the top of those height/weight charts as a kid. He was one of those elevated testosterone kids, covered in muscle, and everyone would joke that he was scrawny and I wasn't feeding him. Finally evened out in his late teens. Now he can't do Doritos and Mountain Dew without also doing crunches.

Yes, BF% is really the only useful measure.

If you look like a starving African child at 150, 150 is probably too low. Have you considered working on building some muscle before you try dieting more? You might be in skinny fat land (fat on top of not much muscle). Building muscle mass does have really unfortunate side effects, though. It makes you more attractive and requires you to eat a lot of tasty protein, and it also makes you more capable of impressing women and/or men with your awesome strength.

Sorry about your doc. From what I know gastric bypass it isn't what you'd consider safe. It's abdominal surgery on a patient that probably already has multiple health conditions that complicate surgery. Much easier to stop eating so much. Much, much easier to stop eating so much before you reach severe obesity land.
