I drive by the main entrance(s) to Baptist/Bowman Gray Hospital - and routinely see patients outside in their gowns, tanks a few steps away, just smoking away... Thankfully I never took up smoking - but if I had, I just know I'd be like that... sad to admit.

2012-05-04 02:57:18 PM
My previous downstairs neighbor was on an oxygen tank, and had big "No flames, oxygen in use" signs on all their doors and windows. Every day she was sitting on the front porch smoking next to the tank. Did not mind when they moved out.

Hey listen, there's a dang ol' fire in here, and dang ol' grandma went dang ol boom!

There's a lesson in all of this, kids. Don't let science stand in the way of your vices. Just because oxygen is "supposed" to be flammable (if you believe the lamestream media) doesn't mean it will be flammable for EVERYONE... Well, it was for HER, but that doesn't mean it is for EVERYONE.

Smoking is pretty glamorous.

2012-05-04 02:59:02 PM
Ugghh, I'm pretty sure there's plenty of oxygen all around us. I doubt the tank had anything to do with it. People love to jump to conclusions and bash smokers whenever they have the chance. The woman is dead, for Christ's sakes. Cut her some slack.

This is how addictive smoking is.

Yet when you try to talk sense to a young smoker, they're completely in denial.

I'm guessing she didn't care about the risks. Her quality of life was such that a cigarette was the highlight of her day. Death was not her concern.

Something needs to be done about all of this unregulated oxygenated air. We need a government agency that will monitor, police, control, and tax the use of this. Think of the poor children who won't be able to go outside and play because of all of the oxygen. this clearly isn't big tobacco's fault but rests squarely on the shoulder's of the Obama administration. how much more blood (or other body parts depending on how big the ensuing explosions will be) will he have on his hands before he does something about this evil gas.

I wonder if she did it on purpose.

My grandmother had one of those, chain smoked right next to it. She died of emphysema.

Exploding sounds like a better way to go than choking yourself to death.

Smoked for 20 years. Glad I will die some other, horrible way.

My Dad did the same thing. Too addicting, no matter how hard he tried he couldn't give it up, even after he was using a tank 24/7 and couldn't walk across the room without being out of breath. Emphysema killed him.

Young person: "I can stop any time I want to stop!"

Me: "Sure, you can NOW."

People have to get over this "Oxygen tanks are flammable nonsense" I am sitting right next to a dozen pure O2 scuba tanks and the chance of them bursting into flames or exploding is nearly zero.

2012-05-04 03:15:57 PM
Had some old friends loose their apartment when the old lady on the O2 tanks up stairs from them decided to pull this trick.

I quit once for 3 years... life got pretty hectic and messed up and that little monkey hopped right back on my back..

people don't realize that damn monkey will always follow you around after a few years of being on the stick...

I'm going to be quitting again pretty soon... working myself back up to it. the age and treachery is starting to catch up with me

my maternal grandmother died of emphysema. but she never smoked a day in her life. On the other hand, my grandfather who was a surviving WWII vet who fought in the Phillipines was a 4 pack a day smoker of L&M's. He died however after docs gave him a colostomy. Funny thing is he injured himself working on the farm and suffered with it until the late 1980's. Healthy as a horse no signs of cancer or anything but the second they opened him up, he was gone. Meanwhile, a non smoker like my grandmother dies of a smoking related illness. He smoked so much that when he got his government retirement checks, he would go to the PX on base and buy a CASE of smokes. If you walked into their house it looked like a bar.

When my grandfather was dying of lung cancer, he would often be in the kitchen, bent double, wheezing, gasping out "I... can't... breathe" in between drags on his cigarette. Thank god he didn't have an oxygen tank.

The neighbor said the victim had oxygen tanks inside the home. Firefighters said the tanks may have been the reason for the explosion. The woman was also a smoker, according to the neighbor.

ok, so the article doesn't explicitly say that she was smoking while using oxygen, or that anyone knows for sure what happened (though I seems likely).

A 38-year-old man was also home with the woman at the time of the fire. He managed to get out safely.

I propose an alternate theory of the incident.

38 yro son living in basement was sparking a bowl while ma was upstairs falling asleep watching wheel.

KABOOM -- junior makes it out of the house, leaving ma to go up like a roman candle on the fourth.

Oxygen is not flammable. Walk into a room filled with pure oxygen and strike a match, and the match will burn fiercely and go out. The oxygen won't (can't!) burn or explode.

I used to work for an insurance adjuster, and one of our clients was a developer that owned a ton of low-income housing units. This kind of thing would happen once or twice a year on their properties. Not only would the smoker's apartment (and sometimes the smoker) be destroyed in the fire, the entire building (6-8 units) would be uninhabitable for several months while repairs were being made (water damage from the fire department response would cause equal or greater damage than the fire/smoke). Families that could least afford it were forced to find new homes (though the property managers would try to help them with that).

/not as bad as the time the six year old girl died from burns because her mom left her alone in their locked apartment with a pan of hot oil while mom "ran to the store" and the apartment caught on fire

As someone with a fricking tube on my fricking face who has never smoked and has to live like I'm on a god damned leash, I'd be getting a kick out of this, but I'd probably just fall down if I tried.

The worst part is actually the fact that the state-regulated mandatory sticker on my door attracts every fricking doorknocking scammer for miles. They will ignore the no soliciting sign now, freely. The assumption by these salespeople is that if you're on supplemental O2, you're old and most importantly, STUPID.

The constant drumbeat of stories like this certainly isn't helping.

I think we've all seen someone smoking while using some sort of oxygenated breathing apparatus. I know I've seen my share. That stuff must be wicked addictive.

Why is the operating pressure of your medical O2 tanks only 2000 psi?

don't know how many classes i have had with employers over fire safety and the "fire triangle" is always brought up. You take away one of the legs the triangle falls. the oxygen just fuels the fire, look at the poor saps in oxygen tents who fell asleep with a lit cigarette and those hospital gowns aren't exactly flame retardant.

watching an episode of spongebob this morning with son and they were camping and had a fire lit. I was like, how can you have a fire underwater. he was like "dad everyone knows that water is 2 parts hydrogen which is very flammable and 1 part oxygen which fuels a fire" don't know if he was being a smart ass or not, but he needs to hurry up and grow up and use that attitude to make lots of money to take care of me and his mom.

Try Nicorette, not to quit but to switch the addiction from the cigarette to gum. You can buy it cheap from New Zealand. Google New Zealand Nicotrol and buy Nicotrol instead of Nicorette, it's exactly the same thing.

ALSO, FTFA They immediately went into defensive mode to attack the fire from the outside.

Wouldn't one go into offensive mode if one were attacking something?

But you're not actively venting them into the atmosphere all the time, thereby raising the relative oxygen in the air inside that room/building.

Medical oxygen is dangerous because over time and low circulation it hyperoxygenates the entire home, making anything even slightly flammable much more so.
