WhyteRaven74: keepitcherry: the Beastie Boys are known for their sample-based masterpieces

What's funny is on a good amount of their songs it's them playing instruments, MCA played bass and keyboards. And the Beastie Boys didn't start out as a rap group, started out as a rock trio.

Yes I know, and a good amount of their songs is insane sample-collage work...which makes criticizing sample based music funny if you're going to praise the Beastie's in the same breath.

Yeah, but it's tough to listen to Paul's Boutique and just get overwhelmed by all the samples on it.

As I recall, it was the last major album to not have to clear its samples before release. Hell, Sounds of Science is pretty much all Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road.

That's what it is!

I can just imagine MCA saying "Cancer, when I said 'It's time to get ill,' I wasn't talking to YOU."

He cut out the part of your brain that does the bi-chin', but apparently didn't get the cancer that did the killin'. :-(

RIP MCA.

From what I've read, it would cost over a million to clear all the samples on it today.

steamingpile: So veganism is not a defense for cancer, no surprise.

Seems some of this is his fault since he was going to Tibetan doctors, was that because of his religion? Stupid move.

I'm so glad there's someone in this thread who has read up intensely and completely on Yauch's battle with cancer, and know absolutely everything he was doing to combat it. It's a shame to hear, from someone with such intimate knowledge, that Yauch was not receiving any other kind of treatment besides a new diet from someone in Tibet. And it's a shame that a dietary change, no matter what his reasons, couldn't possibly have made any difference at all what was left of Yauch's live, and that making some change, any change, had no chance of having even an emotional or psychological effect on how he dealt with facing death.

I'm so grateful to you, steamingpile for the deep thoughts, personal sensitivity and extensive knowledge you bring to every discussion on Fark, whether it's spouting off pointlessly about trivial facts surrounding the death of a musician, or spouting off pointlessly about how the color of someone's skin plays a role in their behavior.

You are a true treasure of these threads. Thank you. Sincerely, thank you.

RIP Adam.

Haz a sad...

MCA where have you been
Packed like sardines in the tin

So kick off your shoes and put on your swim fins
Cause when it comes to quarries I'm known to swim
Adrock light up the place
And if you pull my card you pull the ace
And if you ask me turn up the bass
And if you play defender I could be your hyper space

Roses are red the sky is blue
I got my barrel at your neck so what the fark you gonna do
It's just two wheels and me the wind in my eyes
The engine is the music and my nine's by my side
Cause you know Y. A. U. C. H.
I'm takin' all M.C.'s out in the place
Takin' life as it comes no fool am I
I'm goin' off gettin' paid and I don't ask why
Playin' beats on my box makin' music for the many
Know alota def girls that would do anything
A lot of parents like to think I'm a villain
I'm just chillin' like Bob Dylan
I smoke cheeba it helps me with my brain
I might be a little dusted but I'm not insane
People come up to me and they try to talk shiat man
I've been making records since you were sucking on your mother's dick

Very sad right now. Like someone else said; not the superficial kind, but real sadness.

Fantastic memories listening to them growing up, and still making great memories listening to them to this day.

Rest in Peace MCA, I hope somewhere somehow you can look back and see how much you are appreciated. The entire internet is posting honest and heartfelt sadness today.

Tyrone Biggums: Both him and Eminem owe all of their success to these guys.

Pretty much anyone who's been able to make a living from hip-hop owes at least part of their success to the Beastie Boys (and Rick Rubin, and RUN-DMC, and a number of others who saw that the music could have an appeal outside the housing projects and the discotheques).
