Salt Lick Steady: Serious Black: At least your state doesn't still have a law on the books stating homosexual sodomy is a felony like my state. We're also in the middle of debating a law that would forbid any city from passing anti-discrimination laws for any purpose.

As to the sodomy thing, it's already been found unconstitutional in Lawrence v Texas, so there's really no point in spending legislative time on it. It's unenforceable.

As to the law prohibiting anti-discrimination laws, that was already ruled unconstitutional in Romer v Evans, on rational basis (rather than strict scrutiny) grounds no less.

I wouldn't sweat it.

/unless you're into that sort of thing

Sam Brownback's first action as Governor of Kansas was to create an Office of the Repealer whose job was solely to look for outdated and unenforceable laws and regulations so that they could be put up for expedited consideration to the legislature. Even though hundreds of people suggested the sodomy ban be recommended for repeal since it was nullified by SCOTUS, it was not included in the recommendations to the legislature.

As for the anti-discrimination law, Lawrence banned gender identity and sexual orientation as discrimination factors for housing, employment, and places of public accommodation. The law that passed the Kansas House and is under consideration in the Kansas Senate would provide a blanket religious exemption to the state's and all city anti-discrimination codes and specifically carves out these two types of protections from falling under a compelling state interest for purposes of lawsuits. In essence, it would gut the law in a way that could theoretically pass muster with the courts.

If it was not for an old queen I would have gotten jumped in a bar once. "What are you doing here, this is our place" ... " I heard they played good music and the lighting system is top notch" ... "Get out" ... "um boys leave him alone" Then I spent the rest of the evening having Francene hitting on me, telling me sexual exploits and see pictures of his grown kids.

This.

Abortions (illegal) will continue if they get it outlawed.
Gay marriage, not so much.

Only because the "marriage" has a legal meaning; therefore if gay marriage is illegal it ceases to exist by definition. "Gay life couples who are married in all except legally" will continue to exist.

It sucks that you live in a place where an expedited repeal of the sodomy ban was considered too much of a political hot potato to be included on the list, but eh.

As to this last bit, it simply wouldn't pass constitutional muster.

slayer199: I disagree. If they went more socially liberal and fiscally conservative, they'd have a better chance. It's not like the fundies are going to vote democratic.

That's not how it works though. It's not the GOP catering to the social conservatives. The social conservatives are the ones who show up at the primaries in larger numbers for anything except the actual presidential candidate. So you end up with their preferred candidates. They are a reflection of what their base has become.

Uzzah: stevetherobot: mauricecano: breeder

It's not the word itself that I find insulting it is the sneering condescension implied when it is used.

I'm straight. I've been with my female partner for about 15 years. We have no kids and no intention of having any.

I have a male co-worker who just ended a 19-year marriage that produced three kids. He is now dating a man. His (ex-)wife has moved in with what appears to be a romantic girlfriend.

In this particular scenario, the gay people are outbreeding the straights.

/views the term "breeder" like homosexuals view the term "queer": it might be sneering contempt, or it might be lighthearted sarcasm, depending on the intent of the speaker. In case of ambiguity, I'll usually assume good intentions rather than bad.

I made this point to a gay friend of mine that used the term. I have had a vasectomy. He stands a better chance of being a 'breeder' than I do. Pretty insulting stuff on his part...

On behalf of the gay community I extend an apology. You should never ever be treated like that in a gay bar. It's simply wrong.
I prefer a nice mix of gays and straights in a club. Which is exactly what is going on down here in the Gulf. We have a couple of gay bars and there's always a good mix in there partying it up together, or we trot over to the sports bar and mix it up together there.
Unity baby. In the deep south no less. Blew my mind when I first moved here.

technicolor-misfit: FTA - rather it is a consequence of a shift in the foundations of Western civilization that has been taking place over centuries-a shift from Christian to liberal foundations. So profound is this transformation that even the opponents of same-sex marriage are not exactly fighting to recover the old way of life.

As the dillholes are wont to say about charity and helping the poor... God never said to use government to force it on people.

Banning gay marriage is no more "Christian" than passing laws against eating shrimp... because the Bible never appointed anyone as enforcers.

So, it is actually "a shift from Christian misguided theocrat to liberal foundations." Because there's actually nothing consistent with Christianity about it.

Today I learned that "Christian" and "liberal" are not only the the same axis, but they are opposite ends OF that axis. Thanks, American Conservative!

2012-05-04 02:21:06 PM
over time, conservatives will always lose. women's rights. civil rights. gay rights. society becomes more progressive as time passes, as each generation rebels, however slightly, against the last. there may be short periods of backsliding (e.g. the reagan era, post 9/11), but change is inevitable.

so suck it, conservatives. suck it long, and suck it hard.

1. The term is a joke, and an extremely dated one at that. You don't want to know what "breeding/breeder" refers to now among gay dudes because it will break your mind. nsfw

2. This is a term that is mainly used ironically by straight people to bash smug marrieds who won't shut up about their children. It's not used much by gays. Particularly since gay people know tons of gay couples with kids. LGBTQ people are breeders.

3. The reason why the term is basically meaningless and without bite is because there is no discrimination or penalty to having kids and living the most socially accepted life path as heterosexual parents to cute lil' kids. If the very worst thing someone can say to you is that you have children, wow. There's nothing more insulting than hearing this word? My heart goes out to you for this oppression you face. Rapmaster2000: The thing against which supporters of same-sex marriage have committed their aggression is tradition, specifically the West's traditional understanding of marriage dating back a thousand years and more.

Fallacy of tradition. What else you got?

I believe in traditional marriage. That's why, when my daughter is 13, I'm going to arrange her marriage to the suitor who offers me the highest bride price -- form of payment negotiable, but I prefer goats.

I mean, these "traditionalists" don't even realize that this whole business of a twentysomething man meeting a twentysomething woman, dating, courting, getting engaged and getting married is a relatively new phenomenon in the scheme of things.

Let's hope so. Two gays getting married doesn't affect anyone alse in any appreciable way. What a waste of time.

Kevin72: propasaurus: There will come a time when gay marriage is fully legal and accepted. Yes, they did it all despite the liberal's objections.

NO. See:ABORTION. 40 years later they are still doing everything in their power to deny women their rights.Vaginal ultrasound, fetus personhood, it's getting worse not better.

Totally different type of issue, IMO. The majority of pro-lifers believe that life begins at conception. That will never change.

Two gay guys getting married doesn't really affect anyone else other than some people feel icky, and people can get over ickiness. An abortion kills something that is living, and in the view of pro-lifers that thing that is killed is a human being.

I like your line of thinking.

But seriously, homosexuality might be the result of evolutionary alturism because non-reproducing individuals can provide resources to their siblings and their families that would otherwise go toward their own children.

Call them Civil Unions and watch all resistance go away.

Get government out of the marriage business, instead only to recognize the legal union of two consenting adults, watch all resistance go away.

Take away the legal benefits to any and all consenting adults in a social union, watch all interest in this debate go away.

Hell, I don't like DOMA because it is basically the government getting involved in the marriage business. Repeal that law and rename "Marriage Certificate" as "License to share Domestic Partnership Benefits" and this whole fiasco goes away.

But the gay lobby doesn't want this fiasco to go away. There's too much power in being perceived as a persecuted demographic.

But shiat, when a gay person uses that term, even sneeringly, I just figure that it's some small payback for all the more powerful slurs people have used against them. It's offensive on some small level, but then I realize that I would have an arsenal of comebacks that would be far more devastating if I so chose to say them, so I get over it on the large scale of things (on the small scale of things, I might be like "fark you, you moron" in my head before I forgot about it completely.

The term breeder hurt like hell while I was childfree and after I had my abortion. Way to marginalize your own group members, sisters in arms!

Dude, that sucks that you had to go through that. Hope the relationship works out. And per smeegle's suggestion to be nice, I will let you all watch me do the Roger Rabbit and running man for free!

HotWingConspiracy: There aren't any fence sitters in this debate.

No heterosexual person is sitting around saying "Well I would have supported gay marriage, but some guy on the internet said "breeders", so fark all that."

I'll give you that; I'm just a little curious about the tactic. I'm not sure that saying "civil discourse has gone out the window so fark it" is a course of action that turns the tide.

Mavent: If you're insulted by the word "breeder", you need to have your head examined. Personally, I've always felt that the main advantage of being a straight white male in America is that there's no way for anyone to insult you unless you are, in fact, exactly the what they're accusing you of being. If someone called me a "cracker", I'd just laugh, because it's such a stupid-sounding insult. If they called me a redneck, I'd just be befuddled, because I'm obviously more of a tech geek, and only an idiot could confuse the two. As for "breeder", well, yes. I have bred. I don't really consider it an insult. And frankly, given the level of overpopulation in the world, maybe people SHOULD be reminded to think before they breed.

Forest for the trees, I guess. It's more the tone? When you want to be accepted by the majority, is insulting the majority the best way to do so? I'm not personally insulted because yeah, it's as bad as being called cracker or whatever - hell if I care! If the goal is to gain acceptance and work toward becoming a more civil society that is fully inclusive, it isn't helpful to give your opponents "both sides are bad" types of ammunition though. Especially in a country where so much time is devoted to idiotic media spin for people who can't think for themselves.

Aurric: Let me know the next time a group of angry gay people drags a heterosexual person behind a truck for being straight while screaming "breeder!" and I'll worry about the so-called offensive implications of the term.

Until then, I'm really sorry if your delicate sensibilities are injured through the use of not-really-insulting designations for straight people.

Did I say my delicate sensibilities were injured? When the opposition is using tactics to generalize and dehumanize a group of people, then using those same tactics aren't going to result in a rush of goodwill and understanding. I'm saying, don't use the kind of tactics bigots use, because it only muddies the waters of the entire process. I would like to see the homosexual community keep standing strong with the actual right to claim the moral high ground as has largely been the case, and not give their opponents a chance to seize on a word which can be put in campaign commercials that is almost certain to evoke increasingly stupid movements from a reactionary public. Time and understanding is on the side of equality and inclusiveness and the fight is increasingly becoming a non-issue in that it gonna happen and ain't nothing that can stop it. (Not a non-issue in general though, this is a crucially important fight.) I can't wait until this whole thing is dead and gone, but I would hope that until that actually happens only one side of the argument exposes themselves as jackasses.

Serious Black: Clarence Thomas is going to live so long that we'll find the recipe for immortality by then.

I think that has something to do with conservation of energy. If you never move, speak, or blink, you can live forever. ?

/I'd swear he has Ginny put the robe on for him before he shuffles into the courtroom
