I don't care of it is a prequel or not.

It will be a Ridley Scott film and I trust him to be awesome.

Scott has come out and said that the last 8 (going from memory) minutes of the movie directly intersects with Alien.

I remember reading the interview with Scott a while back where he said it wasn't a prequel. Then I saw the trailer. It's a farking prequel, why say it's not?

I like the theory that the aliens' technology is entirely biological and that the worm/parasite things we saw in the preview turn people into the space jockey. It also explains the Xenomorphs as biological weapons of this alien race.

I find it amusing that the Predators are apparently the only aliens in the universe who aren't total dicks, just mostly dicks.

I'm under the impression that even though it takes place before Alien and has an indirect influence on its plot, it is its own film otherwise.

Saw the longer trailer for Prometheus before The Avengers; it's a prequel to Alien. The second half of the trailer erases all doubt to that.

That theory holds a certain appeal. As long as you don't think about how much more effective a simple bacterial agent would be as a weapon.

I was hoping for an actual comparison of the trailers and some theory about deducing the plot of Prometheus based on the plot of Alien. All they said was "they totally used the same music", yeah no shiat Sherlock, is called paying a homage.

What I actually get from comparing both trailers is that they seemed to be telling the whole story but actually they aren't, we now know Alien wasn't as simple as the trailer was showing, I'm expecting lots of surprises for this one.

I'm really looking forward to this film. I've been hearing a lot of complaining from people saying they know the plot of the movie and it's ruined because they saw the trailers blah blah blah... There hasn't been one movie that I've seen that was ruined because I saw the trailer beforehand. To me this movie doesn't even need to tie-in to Alien for me to enjoy it, on it's own it seems like it would be a fun movie and I've been waiting for a decent Sci-Fi film for a while and this looks like it's on the mark.

I don't know, the hints are there but also in previous trailers we see her running trying to get off something, if its like the creepy stuff that attacks the other guy in the trailer then she's organic.

At first i was disapointed that it wasn't the prototypical HR Geiger alien, but after hearing their explanation, that that creature is so well-known that its no longer scary, i completely agree.

The 'foreign-ness' of the alien makes it scary.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest Ridley Scott didn't factor Predators anywhere into the equation when he came up with his stories as none of the Aliens vs. Predator stuff came from him.

I think calling it a prequel would mean it's a direct predecessor to the first film, whereas it is its own story that just happens to affect a separate story.

I think that's splitting hairs. It's a prequel - why is that such a big deal if it is? Just because it's a prequel doesn't mean it's necessarily bad, it could be a good prequel...

not really. Calling it a prequel implies a greater degree of involvement with the next movie. I'm under the impression that though this movie takes place in the same universe and does set up events that will take place in Alien, but it is its own separate story.

I found that the most interesting design choice of the lot. (The rest seems cool but fairly predictable)

The cube has to be some sort of tease to throw your mind back to the 80's while watching such a state of the art trailer. (even though Alien released in the late 70's)

Sort of a fun jab to say "ignore the sequels, we are bringing you back to the origonal source" type of thing.

But with Scott, you never know.

So excited about this either way.

I'll have to wait until it comes out in 2-D. Can't see the 3-D movies correctly :(

But I definitely want to see this one. I saw ALIEN in the theater the night it opened, and knew nothing about it. That movie changed my expectations about certain movies FOREVER ;)

I think Scott was wanting/hoping to do a sequel to Prometheus if it's successful enough. Leaving it sorta vague as to whether or not it is or isn't a prequel probably gives him some wiggle room.

Have you ever had your eyes checked for astigmatism? Both my sister and I recently got glasses/contacts with astigmatism correction and suddenly watching 3D movies isn't a painful experience where our eyes feel like they aren't working together properly.

It's not even a question of "is it a prequel?" People need to stop trying to fit everything into neat little categories. This is quite clearly "Alien v.2".

Doesn't mean it won't be awesome either.

I think the reason he's been reluctant on calling it a prequel is to temper expectations from the non-nerds that see it. If the studio decides to market it as a prequel to Alien, then a lot of people would be biatching about "where the fark was the alien". By doing it like he is, it's obvious from the allusions in the trailers and probably the film itself that it takes place before alien. However, people who don't know what Weyland-Yutani is can just go in and enjoy it as a standalone sci-fi movie, with maybe a surprise appearance by an alien near the end.

Pretty much this. I think a lot of people might go into this with their expectations of its ties to Alien being exaggerated. I think it looks good enough on its own, though the ties to Alien just add even more to it.

I guess it depends on your definition of prequel. I don't think this movie takes place on LV-426, and the Nostromo and her crew don't appear (Prometheus takes place 30 years before Alien). I get the impression that the creature in Prometheus is just a space jockey, not the same one in Alien. But there is a space jockey (or possibly jockeys), the horseshoe ship, and some sort of "infector"-type alien, although perhaps not the exact same species as in the Alien films.

And, again, I'm not sure how that's different from the rest of the series. Other than one character showing up in both, Alien and Aliens are their own, separate, stories, at least in much as Prometheus and Alien appear to be. There's even a "character" that appears in both, the "space jockey".

... but they're not. The story in Alien directly leads into Aliens. From what I gather, and this is all speculation at this point, Prometheus contains events that otherwise do lead into Alien, but the plot is otherwise separate and isn't a 100% precursor to Alien.
