New, new hotness: what's a DVD?

2012-05-04 11:01:21 AM
Why would I want to watch DVDs on my computer? The picture isn't a quarter of the resolution of any monitor I still own.

I'll watch BLU-RAY on my computer.

2012-05-04 11:04:13 AM
I only ever watch things on my computer. Then again, I never use Windows Media Player, so this won't affect me at all.

2012-05-04 11:08:39 AM
I hardly ever watch movies on my computer.

Except for porn, and I download that.

Carry on, Microsoft.

2012-05-04 11:11:04 AM
Windows 8 is a massive joke, Media player or no. It's built for tablets. PCs are an afterthought.

2012-05-04 11:17:36 AM
Ummm Windows Vista and 7 were the only 2 that had direct DVD playback inside WMP, really who cares I have never used WMP to play DVDs. Almost every computer comes with PowerDVD so you can use the Blu-ray player and even if it doesn't VLC or any of the other free software will do it just fine.

Non issue, plus not many people use laptops to watch DVDs anyway.

2012-05-04 11:20:40 AM
I don't want to watch DVDs on my computer. That takes care of 100% of the people I care about, so I don't care.

2012-05-04 11:48:14 AM
I hear they've also improved the file system. The old default was to hide all file extensions. Now they're going to hide the entire file name instead, and then virtual store the entire disk so that nothing goes where you want it. But it won't matter because you won't be able to see it anyway.

And they say American doesn't innovate any more.

2012-05-04 11:52:41 AM
Ehhh odds are if you're watching videos on your computer, you're either streaming from a site (legal or not) or downloading the videos (legal or not). There isn't much use in DVD playback anymore, and like FARKers have already said, other software does it better anyway.

2012-05-04 12:07:20 PM
just another reason to stay with 7

Came here to say this. VLC is free and far superior to WMP

It was 3.11 Windows for Workgroups that was good. Actually all the 'good' ones above need at least one Service Pack.

Because they are getting sued over it. It's a smart move on their part. Motorola can go EABOD, 4 Billion a year for licensing.

I love you guys.
Beat me to my two fixes.

the SP 1 comment was only sort of true ....
plus they were long enough ago that I can just pretend that SP 1 was always included.

I also have vague memories of win 95 being better than 98 ...

oh well

You ever sort of get the feeling Microsoft doesn't actually like Windows 8, so they're just trying to make it sound awful so it flops?

If only there were some way that you could make incremental improvements. Separating the major parts. Allowing you to replace one component and the rest would still work.

say:
base: cpu, memory, video, networking, scheduling, security, command line
windows: display manager, browser, media player thingy

gosh
and you could replace these parts separately with destroying everything
bahahahahhahahahahahahahaha

/yes yes, I know that this will never happen
/really? linux? LOL next you will tell me that there is only one version of linux which everyone uses

This is farking retarded.

Seriously.
Microsoft expects us to all buy a new version of windows with an interface of giant blocks meant for tablets and other touch-screen devices, and drop Windows 7, which by all accounts is great? (I have Vista installed but W7 purchased and haven't gotten around to it yet because I'm afraid I'll lose my license for Mass Effect 2 because of EA's asinine policies on number of installs).

I know they're gonna do the "new versions of Internet Explorer and DirectX will require Windows 8" (like they did with Windows 7, effectively penalizing anyone who got Vista).

But I wasn't expecting them to drop the DVD license. Surely by now the license is farking cheap. It can't have gone up, with BluRay now being the standard and all of the streaming services?

Hey, I liked Windows 95! I set all my themes to be like it. I remember being confused by the whole "Start -> Explore" thing to access files.

The first DVD I ever watched on a computer was Grumpy Old Men. It was a Pentium II machine and needed a dedicated DVD decoder card and even then it was a biatchoppy. It still seemed amazing at the time since I was used to watching tiny pixelated QuickTime videos.

The more I hear about Windows 8 though the less I want to have anything to do with it. I'm sure it's a great OS for tablets and phones but for a desktop it makes no sense. I think Windows 7 is going to give XP a run for its money in longevity.

While I think most desktop users will avoid Win8, I doubt Win7 will have the lifespan of WinXP, I'd almost be willing to wager that Win9 will have most of the desktop issues that people are complaining about in Win8 sorted out

Exactly. This is just fallout from the terrible standards the movie industry has. You can't even watch a DVD without paying for another licence.

/and they wonder why piracy is so popular

Most people use a 3rd party video player anyway, Microsoft has just decided that they don't want to mess with it anymore. Non story to anyone who used Windows prior to Vista.
