(DeKalb Daily Chronicle)   Now that Romney's effectively the nominee, Mormons brace for attacks on their religion during the campaign. But this is America and surely no campaign would ever stoop that low, Wright?   (daily-chronicle.com) divider line 196

Every Mormon I know is a genuinely nice and caring person. They're family values and generosity are admirable. Let's just say, hypothetically, the Romney won the Presidency and infected us all with a virus that turned us Mormon, would it really be all that terrible? We'd just be nicer to each other and do more for our communities. What are people so scared of with Mormonism exactly?

Poor Mormons. I hope no one does anything really mean to them, like pouring millions of dollars into an initiative campaign aimed at taking their basic rights away.

I think I see what you did there.

well we are all animals and black people sure are getting screwed right now so I am not sure if this is completely untrue

weave: Duh, of course it's going to be party over religious belief.

1) The Democrat is a Christian who has more than once talked about his Christian faith and belief
2) The Republican doesn't believe in the Holy Trinity and believes Jesus and God are separate beings and that even God was once a man.

In Christianity, if you don't believe that Jesus died for your sins and was resurrected, you're going to Hell. Obama may be a sinner (e.g., by not being against abortion) but through his Christian faith, he is forgiven for his sins so he'll go to Heaven.

So Obama is going to Heaven and Romney is going to Hell -- but vote Republican anyway.

Technically, Romney can convert to true Christianity at the very last minute and be saved so there is that. Surely, Obama will renounce Christianity and embrace Islam right after being re-elected.

Mormon culture's general trend towards dehumanizing women, stripping them of their individual identity, etc.

You know... Republican values, lately

SphericalTime: As a gay atheist Democrat (I know, total cliche) I see absolutely no reason to attack Mitt's Mormonism.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is odd, but they're a lot less crazy than Scientology or Prosperity gospel Baptists. Or even Santorum-like Catholics.

Also, there are some really hot Mormon Elders.

Leave it alone, it's barely worth mentioning. Liberals don't care enough, and the conservatives that hate Mormons aren't going to vote for him anyway.

The Mormon-hate won't come from Obama, or from his supporters. It will come in a thinly-veiled form (just enough to give quasi-deniability) from pissed off teabaggers and evangelical Christian hatemongers.

Magorn: oldernell: The southern states will not vote for a black man. Period. They will go for the rich white guy and love it.

True story told me by a pro-Obama canvasser working in W. Va (which admittedly is not TECHNICALLY the south) in '08. She knocks in the door of a fairly rustic dwelling and tells the woman who answers who she is, and asks her if she's made up her mind who she's voting for . The woman yells back into the house "Honey, this lady wants to know who we're votin' fer" A voice booms back: "Well, tell her we're votin' for the Ni*bong* boy" Which she dutifully did.

I felt bad for the WVa dems; in their primary in 08 they had to choose between a black guy and a woman.

I for one see no gain from attacking the Mormon faith. There's a lot that good about Mormonism, from its open minded soteriology1, to its promotion of healthy living.

On the contrary, I think progressives should praise the GOP for their revolutionary move in nominating America's first non-Christian major party presidential candidate. I can say I'm well and truly surprised it was the Republicans who took this bold first step toward a more truly secular America, where a candidate's religious affiliation will be irrelevant to the presidential selection process. Indeed, especially if Mitt Romney wins the election, his presidency will surely help pave the long road ahead leading to the nomination of America's first Jewish, Buddhist, or (gasp!) Muslim presidential candidate!

Congratulations, GOP. By nominating America's first non-Christian major party presidential candidate, you have shown yourselves more progressive in at least one way than the Democrats. I have nothing but good things to say about your courage in this regard.

1Mormonism even holds belief in Jesus Christ is unnecessary for personal salvation. Even adulterous sorcering Muslims get into Mormon heaven! Isn't that great?

Mugato: Hey, I'm the last person to ask to defend the Bible and its inconsistencies but you don't see a little difference between the Old and New Testament and the Mormons considering black people as cursed animals until the 1970s only when it was politically advantageous?

Once irrationality gets to the point of saturation, it's really hard to make distinctions.

And if you want to be taken seriously, perhaps you shouldn't treat every Mormon as collectively responsible for other Mormons' actions. Its a worldwide tradition.

Perhaps it's time for a Democratic SuperPAC to invent a third party candidate and start advertising him on TV in the Southern states. He wouldn't even have to be on the ballot--just advertise him as a conservative Christian and ask voters to write him in. Let the Koch's spend their money fighting that rather than manufacturing lies about Obama.

Again, repeated ad infinitum, I hold nothing against Romney as a person, except maybe that he has the personality of wood. I do have a problem with his policies on taxes, education, drug policy, the environment, stem cell research, and foreign policy, with the possible exceptions of education, drug policy, the environment, stem cell research, and foreign policy, where he is highly flexible depending on the moment. Thankfully taxes are such a big issue for me this makes my decision a no brainer.

I don't know about "all Mormons." I do know that two of my best friends growing up were Mormon. One of them I knew in high school/college, and he was politically progressive. He confessed to me that he struggled with his faith sometimes, because his church taught that blacks are the "cursed descendants of Cain." This was in the mid 90's. Also, when I went into a Mormon church one time, the wall was covered with paintings of ghostly white, almost albino looking blonde headed, blue eyed people in celestial scenes. Nope. Not a single black, Asian, Latino, etc. looking person among them.

Not all Mormons are racist. But I don't think racist doctrine was magically erased from Mormonism in the late 70's either.

No, it will be much more widespread than that. Anti-Mormonism has a very long history in the U.S, alongside Anti-Catholicism.

upload.wikimedia.orgi.imgur.com

In fact, the entire genre of "Westerns" and 19-century public culture is fundamentally shaped by Anti-Mormon literature. Calling someone a Mormon in the pre-David O. McKay days was roughly equivalent to calling them a "Muslim Terrorist" today. It will be one of those unsavory "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" issues where people who would otherwise never speak to each other will cooperate is releasing attacks.

It will be an especially grave injustice, because Romney has taken such a leadership role in speaking out against those who spread false rumors about Obama's religious beliefs. He also took that bold stand in opposition to his church's efforts to codify marriage rights discrimination in California. Yes, it would be just wrong for Romney's opponents to ask questions about how his religious faith informs his political values. Just plain wrong.

Stolen from somewhere & slightly paraphrased, since I simply do not give a flying fark about anybody's religion...

Religion is like a penis:
It's OK to have one
It's OK to be proud of it
But please don't talk about it in public
And FFS don't try to shove it down my throat

Goes double-double for election years.

Mormons believe that if they do everything correct by the Mormon God, they will have an entire planet to be the God of once they pass..there isn't any true Mormon that wouldn't do anything asked of them to get to that goal.

Would love to know the numbers of how much money the church has (and will) put towards his campaign. Their money makes Romneys look paltry.

Grew up in Utah, where the Mormon church doesn't understand the separation between church and state.
