wjllope: wjllope: My choices are:
Cinemark XD-RealD 3D
RealD 3D
Digital Cinema

I like 3D, but I'm not sure what EXTREME DIGITAL CINEMA ("Cinemark XD") is.... The tickets are 3 dollars more than for RealD 3D.
Anyone have any experience w/ Cinemark XD - worth it?

cheers

So, no one has any experience with the cinemark digital format..... I'll know what I think about it at 3:55pm tomorrow afternoon. cheers

cheers

The price locally was only one dollar per ticket more expensive than a standard Real 3D showing. The increased cost was worth the larger screen size and the enhanced sound, but I am uncertain that the 3D presentation was itself necessary.

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX 3D.

Holy. Farking. shiat.

The Dark Knight and Spidey will have to battle it out for 2nd.

brigid_fitch: unlikely: Was it shot in 3d or was it a conversion job?

It was converted. Bought tickets to the 2D show for tonight. If it had been shot in 3D, I might have been convinced to shell out the extra bucks.

You missed out. I am not a fan of 3D by any stretch, and I actively avoid it. But if done correctly, and it was here, it is nearly impossible to tell whether it was shot in 3D or converted afterwards.

NeoCortex42: CavalierEternal: NeoCortex42: Hulk v Loki got a great reaction from the theater I was in.

Without spoiling anything, here are the scenes that got the biggest applause in our theater:

* Galaga
* Hulk vs Loki
* Hulk punch (you know the one)
* Coulson watched Captain America sleep
* Chuck Norris in the "Expendables 2" trailer

Those were all great. Whedon did an excellent job of keeping humor in the movie without making it "silly", although "Hulk punch" was pretty close.

No. Not even remotely. It was awesome and everyone loved it.

Hands down one of the most entertaining super hero movie I've ever seen in the theater. Theater had a great 4K resolution display and the movie looked crystal sharp. Everything has already been said in the thread. Only problem were the two fat biatches sitting behind me that gave running commentary throughout the movie and had a cackling laugh that didn't know when to stop.

Example

Any funny line in the movie

Me: HAHA
Theater: HAHA

Two loud biatches: HAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHAAA AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHHHHHAAAAAAAAAA..

I'm sadly not even exaggerating. They ruined many lines for me as I couldn't farking hear it when their annoying hyena laughs.

Was going to see it again anyways.

The Avengers is a masterclass of ensemble movies as a whole let alone the fact it's the a masterpiece of superhero movies. The pacing was flawless, every character had their purpose and their moment to shine, and Joss Whedon did more in this movie to build The Hulk than the previous two movies combined. Rufalo frakkin NAILED it (sorry Ed Norton, he kicked your scrawny ass). I never doubted Joss Whedon to begin with, but I know damn good and well I better not ever see anyone else talk shiat about him after watching this movie. Ever. This is going to open up a lot of doors for him. It was That. Damn. Good.

Fish in a Barrel: willfullyobscure: "Director Joss Whedon brings TV squalor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) to this, his second big screen superhero outing. Whedon doesn't have Zack Snyder's personal style, the élan that at least made Watchmen and Sucker Punch thoroughly idiosyncratic and fitfully compelling. Whedon directs impersonally, which is to say he manages the proceedings as one runs a fast-food joint.

This analogy ought to appall the very fast-food patrons who flock to The Avengers, yet cannot accept that an artistic enterprise should be more than ground patties of optional substance. Like Whedon, they can't tell the difference between art and conviction-less product[...] Marvel's The Avengers has little to say other than "Buy me!" Millions of mentally hijacked moviegoers will respond like Pavlov's dog, barking "Wow!""

I knew that would be Armond White.

I like the fact that during the trailer, the appearance of the big Chitauri destroyer-carrier-snake thing seemed like it was the climax of the battle when Tony says, "I'm bringing the battle to you." Watching the movie you realize, HOLY shiat! The battle hasn't even really started yet!

Reading the cast credits at the end, they list Alexis Denisof as "The Other". I thought it must be the Chitauri who was Loki's go-between. Checking IMDb, "The Other" has a character link. I clicked on it and it took me to Annihilus' page. WTF? That was Annihilus?

saintstryfe: Le French Boo: Do does thou wearest thy mother's drapes?

The Gattica line was my favorite moment silly moment.

As I pointed out in the Sam Jackson thread: my favorite part was that with two exceptions (the Milionare Playboy line and the team-in-round shot) we haven't seen the REALLY good shots of the movie. Hulk/Loki had our theater applauding, but to be fair, I saw it in what our theater called a Marvel Event - a group of about 70 people had spent 2 PM-2 AM watching all the marvel movies save Hulk in order - they let us order Pizza to the theater even. Was a fantastic time.

I hadn't seen Captain 'Merica until right before the movie which actually proved kinda nice. You could see him being comfortable with his position in the group and when shiat got real, the decision making is what you'd expect.

Saw it in IMAX 3D. I don't catch many movies in 3D but Marvel movies seem to be worthwhile. It definitely expands the flight sequences.

Absolutely amazing! They just need to get ultimate spidey in the next one since they can't use Peter Parker or does sony own all the different Spidermen?

I haven t had an experience like that in a theater since Raiders of the Lost Ark, probably since I grew up reading the Marvel comics that I would get from the local drug store.

Someonereally should fight the diamond stranglehold and bring those racks back for the kids and then they might be able to lower the outrageous prices! OR maybe Marvel could just reprint some of the older books at a discount rate so folks who liked the movie could start to read the stories.

In 2002 Spider-Man made $403,706,375.

In 2008 The Dark Knight made $533,345,358.

Adjusted for inflation, TDK edges Spidey $581,628,700 to $544,065,600. And A LOT of the success of the TDK had to do with Heath Ledger's death and his performance.

The winner between these two will depend on:

1. Which movie is better.
2. Which movie will have kids dragging their parents back to see it.

Saw it today and thought it was amazing. I wish it were out on Blu-Ray so I could watch it right now and then again tomorrow.

The Hulk absolutely made the movie too. Just like in The Avengers:Earth's Mightiest Hero's cartoon, the Hulk is the best character, combing absolute badassery with humor.

When the after credits scene rolled and it showed Thanos, my buddy who is really into comic books nudged me in the shoulder, told me "watch this" and screamed out "HOLY SHIAT!!!! IT'S DARKSEID!!!" The two rows in front of us turned around angrily and started yelling at him "IT"S THANOS, YOU IDIOT!!!" I've never seen someone laugh so hard at their own joke.

Can a Farker help me out and give me link explaining who the army was and a little of their background? I would've asked my friend but then I would have gotten a 9 hour power point presentation and about their past, present, future and multiple story lines.

I admit to stealing this joke when I watched it again tonight.

I got a much more relax response from most of theater that got it was a joke, only a few angry autistic types got upset.

A bunch of quotes from the movie are showing up under its IMDB entry, though there's some duplicates there. I missed some of them, and don't remember the Hulk saying any actual words.. well, the people in the theater got very noisy during the Hulk/Loki moment, so it's no wonder I didn't hear that one..

Nah...you'll be fine.

There are a couple of character moments where events from those movies are mentioned, but, seriously, you'll be fine.

I have to admit that Joss Whedon delivered 100%.

Saw it yesterday afternoon and loved it! Leaving the theater, I was walking behind a group of young girls, somewhere in the 15-16 years old range. One of them was wearing a Captain America hoodie, and I heard her say to one of her friends, "Joss Whedon is the guy who created 'Buffy', right?" When her friend answered in the affirmative, she proclaimed loudly, "well, then God bless Joss Whedon."

Amen, young Whedon-ite. Amen.

It was a desperation move. The rights to Spidey were going to revert back to Marvel/Disney. They had to churn out a movie Spider-Man 4 when Raimi jumped ship. They had to reboot it to get the film out to maintain the rights to the character.

So if we can convince Fox that we won't see another non-Marvel Spider-Man movie...

No argument here. Spidey 3 does not exist in my universe. But there's nothing about the trailer for the new movie that is a turn-off. I'm sorry, it looks great and people that say that it looks disappointing want to be in the "See, I told you it would suck." camp. After the first Avengers trailer, there were some Farkers who were acting all "meh" about it.

Spidey fans will be there opening week, if only to see it for the mechanical web shooters, and a lot of them want to get the bad taste of SM3 out of their mouths. Girls will come for Andrew Garfield, and I loves me some Emma Stone. In the end, children are gonna decide which movie comes out on top. it will be closer than many think.

I knew that, I explained that to someone else earlier. I just think they could have picked a better release date. This obsession with releasing all the big movies in the summer and a couple more in the winter worked when there were like three big movies/per year at most. Now there's too many to cram into a 2-3 month period and expect them all to do well.

The Hunger Games had it right. It had no competition for like a month and stayed at #1 forever. Sure kids are off of school in the summer but most movies make their money on the weekends anyway.

I'm pretty sure that they had to release by summer 2012 in order to hang on to the film rights, and they were probably pushing it in terms of post-production time.

Either way, we'll never see a Marvel Studios Spider-Man movie. Sony will not let go of those film rights. Marvel Studios would be smart to pick another hero and promote him/her to Spider-Man status by tweaking their origin and appearance. They could do it with Spider-Woman, Speedball, Scarlet Spider, or any number of other characters, but they'd have to be careful not to tempt Sony's lawyers by getting too close to the Spider-Man story.

The ironic thing is that while Marvel Studios can't make a Spider-Man movie, Warner Bros/DC could certainly choose to make a Black Spider movie as it's their character and they own the film rights completely.

For those who don't know, Black Spider is DC's copy of Spider-Man. Same powers, same attitude, similar origin... But he's a villain.

If only Marvel could get their hands on the rights to Black Spider for the Marvel Movie Universe, we'd be in business. I mean, it's not as if DC/WB will ever use him in a movie.

He is in the Young Justice animated series though, voiced by Josh Keaton who also voice Peter in Spectacular Spider-Man. But true, I don't think he'll be starring in his own feature film any time soon.

Yes. The Other was the chitauri that Loki dealt with and was reporting to Thanos at the end. And I don't think it was a mistake when The Other linked to Anihilus; note the extreme similarity of The Other's face decoration to Anihilus'. Also, remember that there was no mention of *where* Loki ended up, so theoretically, that could have been the Negative Zone that the chitauri were invading from. Sure, just speculation right now, but I see some definite possibilities where things could go.

I'm not a huge comic book guy, but maybe a geek farker can answer this for me:

SPOILER

When Thor throws down on Cap's shield, and the shield basically stops it and radiates the energy outward, levelling the place (awesome scene, by the way), was that what was expected to happen? To me it seemed like the "unstoppable force meets immovable object" conundrum, with Mjolnir that can basically smash anything, and the vibranium shield than can absord any impact. I know they teased it in the trailer, but I had no idea how it would go, not knowing the comics.

END SPOILER

ZeroCorpse:
Either way, we'll never see a Marvel Studios Spider-Man movie. Sony will not let go of those film rights.

Never say never. The house of Mouse has a lot of money, a lot of power, a lot of influence, and the best lawyers. More than Sony and more than Fox. Disney has already purchased Sony's participation in Spider-man merchandising. It's only a matter of time.

Yeah, it may be a long way off, but Disney will eventually get the rights to Spider-man and the Fantastic Four back. Eventually. In the meantime, it might behoove studio execs to look into some creative licensing agreements wherein certain characters could make cameos in each other's films. For example, allowing Spider-man to make an appearance in say, the Avengers 2, would increase ticket sales for A2 and would certainly help create momentum for Amazing Spider-Man 2. A long shot to be sure as Disney probably doesn't really want Spider-man to do that well for Sony.

Amazing would have to bomb this summer for Disney to make a move. But it ain't. If it's a good movie, Spidey will give Bats a run for the money.

texdent: Further speculation is that Coulson isn't dead
