Deitz said he was offered $100,000 for the home a year or so ago. "They were going to buy me out and they backed out," Deitz said. "I want $150,000 for it now."

That part's my favorite.

"It's hard to say what this gentleman's true motives are," Brooks said. "I think my opinion is the same as everybody -- I wouldn't want to be living next to it."

Speak for yourself. The house I moved into a few years ago had a fence shaped and painted to look like fire. We would have made excellent neighbors.

I'm sure his neighbors and anyone nearby trying to sell a house are thrilled. It is this shiat that drives people to buy within an HOA.

I came to quote "A pox on both your houses!", but in looking it up, I found it's a misquote. The line is "A plague o' both your houses!" which doesn't quite fit as well for a spotted house.

It didn't stop me from posting anyway though.

I would rather paint a picture of a tunnel with a roadrunner in the distance. I'd get great publicity from the copyright lawsuit.

Heh, this reminds me of an old coot that lived in The Colony Texas about 85/86, had some dispute with the city so he painted his house (that was in a very good location to be seen) a god awful purple. Someone eventually bought him out, there are fast food places and a housing edition through there now.

Perhaps this would encourage the neighbors to pressure the state into buying out the polka-dotted property...

Well now, all that is needed is a cheap SEP field generator, and the house will effectively disappear. :D

I guess I'm the only one, but I actually rather like the colorful paint job. I live in a neighborhood of hipster flips -- all charcoal grey with orange-red doors.

I think it looks pretty badass. Better than the sickening beige of most housing developments. I would have no problem living next to it.

I'd be ok with it, except that some of the larger dots are not perfectly round. That really bugs me.

People that are driven to an HOA because of things like this deserve what they get from an HOA.

CSB: some years ago, I lived in Charleston, CS. For those of you who haven't visited there, it's a very old and lovely city. Charlestonians can be pills, especially about maintaing the historical integrity of the peninsular city. They have a board of architectural review that must approve any plans to make modifications or repairs to any home within the National Historic District. These approvals include repainting a house and they are very strict; only about seven colors are approved and they will deny any permit that isn't for one of these colors. Well, a guy had just bought a very old and expensive home and it needed painting. The BAR denied his permit because he didn't want to use one of the approved colors. This pissed him off. The Spoleto Festival USA was just around the corner, so as an "art" display for the festival and to piss on the BAR, he had his house painted using all of the BAR approved colors, but in a camouflage pattern. To be honest, the house looked awesome. But the BAR was not amused and sued him. They lost their case because the regulation said that BAR colors had to be used, but didn't stipulate to how many could be used. Later, the man agreed to repaint the house to meet BAR standards, but only if the BAR paid for it.

I'd rather volunteer to paint his house with polka dots than have to accept or deal with an HOA.

I'm always baffled by people who are happy to sign away the very rights that make home ownership worthwhile by accepting the petty fascism of an HOA.

I think it is pretty and artistic. I would not mind living in or next to that house. It is far better than a boring white house. Something is not ugly or tacky just because it isn't painted one of the top five colors that millions of unimaginative people choose.

2012-05-04 02:16:41 PM
Good for him. It's his house he can paint it however the fark he wants.

/won't somebody think of the property values!

2012-05-04 02:18:01 PM
If the value of your house decreases because of this you must find the new real estate agent and also consider that it is perhaps that people do not wish buying the home from the fat person because they expect it to have the bad smell that permeates the walls.

Technical question here: what differentiates a polka dot from an ordinary one?

There are very few arb's that dictate color. Charleston is one exception. You should be aware of these regulations before buying an expensive piece of property in a historic district. I do like how he protested, but he sounds like an ass who feels entitled because he has money.

2012-05-04 02:23:58 PM
Why on earth does the color of this guy's house have anything at all to do with the values of neighbors houses or even that much to do with the value of his house? If it had any effect on the value of the house it should only an amount representing the cost of repainting it.

Sort of like "Alright knock off the cost of having a professional make this house look less like a circus performer and we have a deal."

I never understood this part of property valuation. It's like those stupid shows where they redecorate somebodys house to make it sell. WTF? Unless the furniture and decorations come with the house I couldn't care less how they are arranged. I'd rather know that it's well insulated the house is, the crime rate in the neighborhood, my commute time, how good the wirieing is etc.

Just guessing, I'd say they are relatively large (i.e. not just a spot but a significant circle), a solid color, and generally in a tight grid pattern.
