I know this is awesome. But it creeped me the hell out. The way they describe it in the article, this is what unfolds:

TECHNICIAN: [SLICE]

DOCTOR: What do you do in a car?

PATIENT: You drive.

TECHNICIAN: [SLICE]

DOCTOR: What do you do in an airplane?

PATIENT: You fly.

TECHNICIAN: [SLICE]

DOCTOR: What do you do in a swimming pool?

PATIENT: You banana.

DOCTOR: Okay, technician, stop.

I'd seriously consider off'ing myself before going thru divorce with kids in the picture again.

They already do anesthesia-free brain surgery. The brain isn't capable of feeling pain when damaged, so when it's only the scalp and skull that need numbed. Also they prefer to keep patients awake to make sure they don't "knick the wrong area". All the Italians are doing is giving the patients teasers to keep them busy.

Did subby read the article or did his wife get his reading glasses too?

It's not anaesthesia-free; there are still local anaesthetics involved. The brain has no pain sensing nerves, but the scalp sure does. But they don't put you to sleep.

And they already do this: a number of brain surgeries have to be done on wide-awake patients so that they can tell when they're in the right place. This is a refinement in communication with the patients so that they can get a better idea of just what it is they're playing around with in there.

If they mean keeping people awake during brain surgery, I thought that was SOP. The questions too, to make sure that you're not cutting into something you shouldn't be.

I knew a guy who was wide awake while his brain tumor was removed. He said it didnt hurt at all but it left him unable to walk for 9 months.

He was a uranium disposal technician in the Army but the VA denied his claim that the tumor was work-related.
Go Army!

Yeah, I was a bit surprised that TFA was being taken as 'news' - my mum had 3 surgeries like this, and that was in the 90s. After the second surgery she couldn't remember the word 'pen' - she knew what it was, how to write etc., just that word escaped her memory.

As an anesthesiologist, let me say that there are miles between "no anesthesia" and "awake and able to answer questions."

Also, this is not a new thing.

What do you mean divorce? It sounds more like marriage.

In Canada it's called marriage. Divorce hurts the assets.

I think grandma's surgeries were around the same time. Late 80s/early 90s.

Maybe it is the Italian to English thing, but the author has no idea what is actually going on w/ brain surgery.
Do not read the farkin' article. Thank me later.
