Some Bass Playing Guy: There's a difference between arguing the merits of who's in what spot and mostly arguing that this list sucks. This thread is the latter, not the former. And like I said, SPIN could have made a great list of actual guitarists for their target music demographic quite easily. It could have avoided all of the cliche players

and i would say that those saying the list sucks are doing so because the list doesn't include the normal, cliched artists who generally appear on this list. The list certainly has its faults, but most of the This List Sucks arguments seem to stem from ignorance as it seems to show that they don't know what kind of music Spin covers or that a specific type of guitarist is what they're looking for.

most of those have been cringeworthy but I am happy to have found this guy today:

Shuggie Otis - Bootie Cooler

/might have to get some of his stuff
//Arto Lindsay, Adrian Belew, Eugene Chadbourne made me literally cringe...

Wow what a terrible list. I get what they are going for but there are so many great guitarists out there that most people overlook simply because they aren't influential in the industry or their band isn't "big" enough.

Miyavi for example. Dude can play like a badass. Or Jack O'Shea from Bayside, Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion, or Casey Prestwood of Hot Rod Circuit.

I'm happy to see #68 there. His music isn't always my cup of tea but there's no denying how damn technical the guy is, especially while flailing around and trying to keep ever-changing time signatures straight in his head.

Horrible list. It's just hipster crap and other shiat that non-musicians like, and some of the folks on the list are hardly "musicians."

Instead of having this tired argument I will try to make a suggestion

D. Boon (The Minutemen) is a monster on the guitar. He is smart, funny, and is the leader of one of the best punk bands of all time. They had an awesome philosophy on how music should be preformed and provided to their fans/community. If you like The Minutemen and Boon then you should check out Mike Watt (bass player for the Minutemen)

Andy Kerr and Tom Holliston of NoMeansNo are incredibly good (IMHO). They are a Canadian trio that plays really solid punk-ish music. Another smart band that all Farkers should check out. If you like them check out their side project The Hanson Bros.

These two bands get better with every album, interview, and video. Check em out and enjoy.

Nice to see fugazi on there, as their sound pretty much defined everything afterwards.

It means people who like things because they think it's cool to like them, regardless of actual artistic merit. I.e., superficial nonsense.

they don't fit in with the parameters set out by TFA. You should read it first.

I also think it's funny how people can biatch about Hipster music but then without a hint of irony talk about a bunch of guitarists who are only known amongst other guitarists and of which only half have any kind of commercial success.

you're talking about the no-names on the list right?

2012-05-04 12:18:38 PM
I clicked the link ready to biatch, cuz, you know, no Hendrix. Found an interesting list of alternative, avant, punk, and extreme metal guitarists. O noes. My only complaint is the utterly misleading title. Most of you are very old and dumb.

Trey Azagthoth was a really cool out of the box choice, the first few Morbid Angel albums are fantastic. As much as it pains me to say it as a Pantera fan, Dime would have been at least 40 places lower on the list were he still alive. Prince is a notable omission from these lists most of the time, so it was nice to see him make it. Overall though, a five year old child could make a better list.

In trying to keep in the theme of I think they were trying to do I would add:
East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys
Wino from Obsessed and Saint Vitus
Link Wray
Various Original Misifts guitarists because that music is so basic , but has stood the test of time for me
Matt Pike of Sleep/High on Fire

Have you seen the Minutemen acoustic videos on youtube?

The Music tab was one of the first things I'd check when I'd get to work. I'd like to see more threads about different non-mainstream genres of music where people give recommendations. At least to check stuff out and form my own opinion. Both new music and old music. There has been so much recorded in the last 100 years that people aren't aware of, but might like if they were exposed to it.

Yeah, they are awesome. Those three guys played amazingly well together. D. Boon dying was such a shame, I would love to hear what he would have to say about the world as it is today.

I found all my favorite bands on the Music Tab. It was a stink hole most of the time but we had some great threads.

I say replace the Politics Tab with a new Music Tab. At least one could always discover some new artist in the threads, as opposed to the day-in, day-out monkey shiat-flinging that passes for political discourse on Fark!

That way no one will read the other 99 items on my list

That is the worst list I have ever had the displeasure of reading in my entire life.

Besides the obvious icons left off the list, whether you love them or hate them, Phish's Trey Anastasio deserves a spot.

/whine

And when your article of the 100 greatest guitarists starts with this line "Look, as far as we know, our asymmetrically coiffed party pal has never held a guitar in his life." you know you're in trouble.

List gets a little WIN for putting John Fahey at #3. Otherwise: a bunker full of weapons-grade FAIL.
