moothemagiccow: You threw Flea & Bootsy in there just to fark with me, right

What do you have against the slap-bass?

The Iron duke: the_celt: That list is an abject failure and the author should be locked in a small room loaded with Yoko Ono combustibles and a microphone set ablaze. on meth until he's dead

Okay, that's a bit too cruel.

"b.b..but Rush, Clapton, Gilmour!!"
Yeah, shut the fark up. Robin Guthrie is on the list. If you haven't heard of him, you're really not interested in music.

I think we should toss Lita Ford on the big board, too.

2012-05-04 03:52:08 AM
oh, and Alex Lifeson just for opening riff on "Spirit of Radio." How many wanna be guitarists had to learn that?

MBK: Jesus Christ, this writer is just farking stupid.

First, he claims this: "As you will see, our list embraces outsiders, trailblazers, outliers, and Eugene Chadbourne playing a rake. We don't worship "guitar gods," but prefer our axe-wielders to be resourceful, egalitarian, flawed, and human. We're not drawn to Olympic feats of fleet-fingered athletics, unless they're used for unique and exploratory ends. We see the mewling histrionics of Jeff Beck as tyranny instead of catharsis. The name Derek Trucks is practically alien to us."

And yet, the list is "TOP 100 GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME"

It is like making a list called "Hottest Women of All Time" then disqualifying actresses and super models and somehow putting Rosie O'Donnell as #1 because she "doesn't convey the qualities of what is considered beautiful".

Well-put. On a similar subject, how is there no Eddie Van Halen?

Flawed...human...you know what, we should throw in the lead guitarist of Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener's favorite song on the list as well, since it matches the criteria.

Once again proving that the writers at SPIN don't know their collective asses from a hole in the ground. No Hendrix, no Stevie Ray, no Satriani, no Orianthi, no Steve Vai... hell I'm surprised they didn't include Neil Young in their list. What a bunch of complete douchebags. I hope the SPIN offices burn the the ground with the writers of this list locked inside.

Gotta agree with what Harry_Sheldon said a few posts up. Lita Ford was pretty rough during the Runaways days, but DAUM did that girl get better with time.

2012-05-04 04:03:45 AM
Ishkur: Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana, Eric Johnson, Mark Knopfler, Brian May, Yngwie Malmsteen, David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, Les Paul, George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Fogerty, Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Slash, Flea, Zakk Wylde, Herman Li, Nancy Wilson, Angus Young and Bootsy Collins are not on this list.

This isn't a real list...

It's a certified troll.

Bootsy and Flea are bassists.

2012-05-04 04:05:42 AM
And, yeah, I agree...this should've been monikered something akin to "The Top 100 Alternative Rock Guitarists". But then we wouldn't be, er, "discussing" it right now.

Pandora's Litterbox: The List:

I think there's 16 names I'm familiar with, many that don't impress me. Billy Corrigan? I thought he was the singer.

2012-05-04 04:09:29 AM
I bet 90% of the people on this list would say, "Wow, what a stupid farking list, it's obvious that everyone that contributed to writing it hasn't so much as picked up a guitar, let alone know what makes them work."

2012-05-04 04:09:57 AM
I've never actually met a guitarist or musician or a music fan that wouldn't say Jimi Hendrix is a certified legend and one of the, at least, top 5 greatest guitarists of all time.

2012-05-04 04:12:57 AM
Alphax: Billy Corrigan? I thought he was the singer.

He performed every instrument but for the drums on all of the pre-first-breakup studio albums. He and Jimmy Chamberlain pretty much were the Pumpkins when not performing live.

2012-05-04 04:21:01 AM
Why is anyone surprised at this. All the "Top..whatever" lists on the web today are basically "Top things we liked from the 90's and 2000's" and artists mentioned by Alt groups as influences.

2012-05-04 04:23:35 AM
Out of that abortion of a list, I recognized about 60 (give or take 5) names on that list, but that includes the entries that included 2 names. That said, just because I know the name/or band doesn't mean they should be included in a list of guitar greats. I mean FFS how in the green hell can this author say that Kurt Cobain is a better guitarist then Adrian Belew or Robert Fripp. There are so many things wrong with this list it's not even funny.

2012-05-04 05:05:25 AM
Windmill facepalm! Dahnkster does a lot of live music. The Hendrix Experience Tour was tits. Eric Gales was kicking 15 flavors of candy-flavored ass. Skrillex is better guitar than Sonny Landreth?

Troll list is droll list.

Since the kids need some learning, let's a studio session player for everyone in the 60-80s session player Hugh McCracken. Most will know his work from Steely Dan

2012-05-04 05:37:29 AM
What a load of pretentious shiate. If no one has mentioned him yet I would like to add Pete Townsend.

I think even Kurt Cobain would lose his head to be on that list so high. He was decent, but he still was humbled by his idols and influences.

This list is obviously written by a troll or someone with some really farked up hearing.

2012-05-04 06:08:16 AM
Dr.Zom: Spin still exists?

After reading the tripe that is TFA, I'm as suprised as you are.

/No Clapton, Knopfler, Satriani--and that's just off the top of my head.

2012-05-04 06:20:45 AM
outside of the really odd Skrillex addition, I think my only real problem is that the list is random in how it ranked everyone. Otherwise, those in here saying they only know 3 or 4 of the guitarists are kind of full of shiat as it was fairly all over the rock spectrum, though biased towards punk/indie.

2012-05-04 06:30:48 AM
Seriously? Whether you like him or not, if you're going to puke out a list of great or influential guitarists, Hendrix has to be put on there. And, unless you title your list "100 of the Greatest Guitarists Not Named Hendrix or Clapton," he's pretty much a requirement.

I'm not really sure what Spin was trying to prove here. This isn't even trolling on their part. It's just a demonstration that they really haven't a clue what music is, they have no respect or understanding of the history of music, and they have no idea why people listen to it.

Strange. Spin used to be good in the dead tree format, but it seems like they've completely given up on anything even remotely resembling quality or intellectual honesty. The writers of this article should be embarrassed.

2012-05-04 06:43:15 AM
Alphax: I can't even find the list, what a horrible web site.

This.

I eventually got to view the list, but only after the site crashed my browser three times. And then the list was a vortex of suck.

Fark everyone at SPIN.

2012-05-04 06:55:58 AM
Eric Clapton
Paul Kossof
Brian May
Allen Collins/Gary Rossington/Ed King/Steve Gaines
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Kirk Hammett/James Hetfield
Slash
Derek Trucks/Duane Allman/Warren Haynes
Sonny Landreth
Doyle Bramhall II
Eddie Van Halen
Angus Young/Malcolm Young
Buddy Guy
Brad Paisley
Keith Urban
Tom Morello
Joe Perry
George Harrison
Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser
Carlos Santana
Mark Knopfler
Joe Walsh
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Randy Rhoads
Peter Frampton
Billy Gibbons

There, I've already made a better list. Do I get a paycheck, Spin?

2012-05-04 06:56:43 AM
This has to the be the worst "Best of" list I've ever seen. EVER. Total list FAIL!

Some of the notable exclusions: Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Angus Young, Pete Townsend, Randy Rhoads, and Slash.

Thanks Spin. You've saved me time in the future from ever clicking on a Spin link because I'll be ignoring your opinions because they're worthless.

Lsherm: The lack of a music tab on fark has resulted in this.

The old Music tab eventually got axed because a handful of sad and pathetic basement-dwelling Farkers saw it as an easy way to up their "approved links" count. Every single farking headline on the Music tab was basically the equivalent of "Your favourite band sucks, LOL."

It had more dickish and trolling headlines than the Politics tab, by quite a wide margin.

Lysol_Please: I think the author should just rename the list '100 best guitarists from music that I like'.

well, that's pretty much what it is. If you know the kind of music Spin covers, it's fairly easy to see why they included the guitarists they did and excluded otherwise rather notable guitarists. Spin is rather obviously skewed toward Punk/Indie, so they're including guitarists relevant to the genre(s).

Granted, I can't explained the inclusion of Skrillex nor the exclusion of Hendrix. I also would've added Killing Joke's Geordie Walker.

2012-05-04 07:42:14 AM
The fewer white guys who have mistakenly believed 12 bars + endless wanking = the blues in a list of greatest guitarists, the better.

I'm sorry, the correct answer was "Andres Segovia."

It's Spin. It's a magazine geared toward the alterna/hipster crowd.

Once you understand that alot more of it makes sense.

It was nice to see Greg Ginn get some recognition. When I was teen I didn't think that highly of him as a player. After reading "Get In The Van" I gave him a second listen and was quite surprised at what I had missed in my youth.

Oh, and the inclusion of Slayer was nice as well. Those dudes don't get anywhere near enough props.

2012-05-04 08:07:12 AM
Good to see Curt Kirkwood, Greg Sage, Johnny Thunders, Dr. Know, and Buzzo on there.
