jso2897: I have a question - who the hell is smoking all this ditchweed? They keep catching fools in little boats almost getting themselves drowned off the coast with bales and bales of the shiat.
Who smokes it? Anybody can get a letter and go to a clinic and get good bud. All the illegal dealers (who nobody seems to hassle much any more) have bud. The f**king crusties on the Venice Boardwalk smoke bud - and they PANHANDLE for a living.
Who smokes this glorified rope from Mexico?

This might come as a surprise, but some states do not have a coastline.

California is a massive port. It can run at a loss and still operate fine because it won't stagnate. The question is: why would the average hard-working family man not want to move there?

I can think of one right off the bat:

DozeNutz: I love how the people who rail against you have no rebuttal to the FACT that its a spending problem.

The problem winterwhile's post is that it's meaningless. Let's say someone said, "the problem with the Cleveland Browns is they don't win enough games." Would you consider that person to be a football expert?

Assuming he is right, that California's problem is only but a spending problem, then how does he propose cutting spending? Does he want to empty the jails and let prisoners run free? Close the schools? Raising taxes is out of the question in California but so is ending voter initiated programs.

Since California has programs that legally can not be cut yet still need to be paid for, describing the issue as nothing but a spending problem is brain-dead over simplification of the issue which deserves nothing but derision.

Satanic_Hamster: Heh. What is it with Republicans who think they can fix budget problems with one time revenue sources?

"I know, let's sell state assets at a loss to a campaign contributor, I SWEAR it will work this time to fix our long term problems!"

Lets ignore the obvious potential for corruption.

It is the perfect political solution. It makes the problem go away long enough to declare victory and move on. By the time the problems with sell public assets don't rear their ugly heads until long after politician moves on. Everyone in SE Michigan is pissed that someone sold the bridge to Canada to douche. The sale helped balanced the budget in Detroit for a couple years, but everyone is biatching at the bridge owner and no one is blaming the jack pole who sold the bridge.

vernonFL: California should legalize drugs, and the drug trade.

If they regulated and taxed marijuana, meth and cocaine in that state, they would have enough money for schools and roads

The only solution is to legalize the pot in the North and legalize and regulate the traffic in meth and coke coming in from Tijuana and Mexicali, tax the cartels and stop putting thousands of violent Mexican gangsters in prisons they can't afford.

I have family who live around Temecula who have drug gangsters on their land, and family who live in Palos Verdes and bales of pot and cocaine are washing up on the beach, its ridiculous.

I didn't realize there was much meth trafficking. I thought one of the things that make it so dangerous is how it is easily made with basic store-bought ingredients and takes almost no skills to manufacture. I thought that was one of the reasons it is so devastating to many small communities in the Midwest.

That's gotten a lot harder now that pseudoephedrine is semi-controlled. Besides, it's always been much easier to mass manufacture that shiat in Mexico where no one's watching than it is here.

We made it difficult to get the precursor chemicals here in the US thinking that the desire for the drug would magically evaporate if we limited the supply. Of course that's farking retarded and south of the border business interests saw a business opportunity and expanded into the meth market to ensure a supply for users and profit for themselves.

Not surprisingly, it's now easier to get meth in quantity than it is to get Sudafed and, as I recall, Science or Nature recently published a paper on how to synthesize pseudoephadrine hcl from meth.

You know what? Let's grant the premise, it's a spending problem.

Tell me how slashing safety net programs and not touching defense, prisons, or any of the other MASSIVE sinks of money will fix the problem. The measures these people keep talking about cutting are ones that don't put much of any dent into the deficit. They're political cuts, slashed because they don't think they should exist. They don't fix the problem.

What will you cut to actually get things working without raising taxes?

You'll excuse me if I don't feel very empathetic towards your feelings of raising the total marginal tax rate for people earning more than $250,000 per year above their current 43%. But you're right, this tax increase for those people will definitely initiate the fall of the country and/or armed revolution.

Then again, California wouldn't have to increase the income tax rate if their damn property tax laws weren't so screwed up.

California's problem is that voters can pass new spending requirements, but aren't required to fund them. That leaves the state with obligations it cannot pay for, and it's having trouble cutting enough spending in other places to cover the new stuff, as it can't easily raise taxes to pay for it.

the result is a system that was well intentioned, but now hopelessly broken.

As for the GOP? Pretty much just a part of zealots and authoritarians. They don't have any solutions besides more tax cuts for the rich, and honestly, they don't care too. For them, power alone is the goal, not actually helping people or governing.

You know what would solve our money problem right away? As in immediately, without further notice? The federal government picking up the tab for the costs of illegal immigrants on the state. If the federal government wants to argue that states can't police immigration, then they should pay for them. The estimated 10s of billions a year the state spends on welfare, jails(depending on locale, 20-40% of the prisons and jails are made of illegals), etc for illegals would be more than enough to cover our perpetual budget gap.
