Good Caturday Folx, the subject of ghare's post & linkie re emergency surgery for kitten Sinclair, above, does deserve The Power Of Caturday & to followed upon. Junkyard Owner: We got a cat 'round here somewhere.
Frank: Cat? We don't-we don't want a cat.
Junkyard Owner: Wait a minute. Wait a minute, believe me. That's a tough cat. He was born in a pool of gasoline on a piece of rusty scrap metal. I've seen that cat jump through barbed wire into a vat of hot tar. That cat? Is indestructible.

Shadow is home. He's almost done his meds. It's been rocky as he didn't want to eat. Turns out he caught a cold while at the hospital so I am waiting for his vet to call....as if he hasn't gone through enough...today is his last day of morphine and his other med and now I have to give him cold meds!

If you have pets in Toronto, the Woodbine Animal Clinic, though pricey, is amazing. They didn't have him come in for a follow-up because they didn't want meo spend more money than we already have...but I've spoken with them everyday for check-ups, they've reassured me he sounds great and like he is on the mend. Sooo happy to have his cuddly ass home. Thnks for the well wishes

yobbery: Hi guys. Just popping in to summon the power of caturday.

Long story short, Wolf had to go to the hospital this morning due to urinary blockage.
I caught him peeing on the wood floor in the spare room this morning before work. I yelled at him (which I feel horrible for now) and he ran off leaving a small puddle of pee. Mentioned it to my wife and she said she saw him doing the same thing in the kitchen. I left for work and the wife called the vet to make an appointment. The vet told her to take him into the hospital so she took him down before she had to go to work.

All I know at this point is he'll be there 2-3 days minimum. I guess the standard treatment is 24 hours with a catheter, then another 24 hours to make sure he's peeing on his own. That's the best case scenario. If it's due to crystals they should flush out with the catheter, however it could be stones or something else. That's all the info I have right now.

The wife gets off work at 8:00 and we're going to the hospital at 8:30 to visit. I'm hoping they call with some news before then.

It was sheer coincidence that I posted this last night...Viscous cat is entirely too viscous.
[i211.photobucket.com image 640x480]

We went through the same thing last weekend. Our vetclaimed 36 hours is best and he actually went a bit longer as he blocked his cath. But he's been hone sinceMonday night and is doing well (though he got a cold at the vet). Best wishes, I'll keep your little one in my thoughts while I cuddle my recovering one.

Your Huckleberry & moshi8, you have my sympathies. I lost my 19-year-old baby the week before Thanksgiving and I still can't get used to not putting my plate on the floor for him to lick.

Yobbery, I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for Wolf (I can do that).

As for myself, I'm enduring the longest stretch of catlessness I've endured in my life, and it's really starting to get me down in a big way. Unfortunately I'm on such a tight budget right now that I can't afford an adoption fee, much less to adopt a kitten and then have to neuter/spay/get shots. (Besides, I'd rather get a cat who's at least 9 months old -- I like to have some kind of clue to the kind of personality I'm welcoming into my home!)

I miss my boys so much!

good morning!
so i guess i just need to vent for a minute. i hate packing. i really do. i still have things in boxes from when i left my ex about five years ago.
to catch anyone up to speed my hubby and i moved out to maine in august following a job as a used car salesman. i got a job a few months later at a cumby's gas station to help things along while i was pregnant. fast forward to april and easter. baby is here and i now only work two days a week for about 12 hours. hubby has had way too many bad days with his boss yelling at him and telling him one thing and then yelling again because he wasn't working on a second thing instead. hubby wants to go back home to vermont where we have family around. hubby wants to go back to school to get his pilots license and get to fly planes like he's always wanted.
in the meantime we have no jobs back in vermont and no place to live either and what to do about the cats. hubby just rented the budget truck for the 23rd of this month giving me two and a half weeks to pack everything we own again for like the third time. there is no place to put our things as well. i don't mind the moving part of this. i even don't mind the packing part of this. what i hated was that hubby had just simply assumed that i would return to work full time and he would go off to school and have a part time job. i don't think i'm emotionally ready to leave the baby for more than part time hours not to mention we have no baby sitter lined up for her. i can't rely on some of my family members to watch her though my mother would be glad to i'm sure on the week ends.i love my husband, i really do. i'll go where he goes but i just wish he hadn't waited til i was getting settled and finding a social group of my own.
and end rant. sorry.
jake and elwood have been wrestling a lot recently. we like doing commentaries about it while the boys tussle and roll around. a few nights ago we were eating dinner, i've got my back to the door and the baby on me so i can't turn around. i hear a thud against the toilet seat, you know, it makes a certain sound that's always recognizable, and hubby is laughing. the boys were up in the bathroom window which is slanted so they slide a bit when they're up there. add to this a wrestling match. elwood had pinned jake for a second and then jake had reversed things so he could free himself only to roll and fall like a rock onto the toilet before hitting the floor on his feet. then he was off and running with elwood racing after him.
elwood loves his baby

Illustr for article from Tufts U Veterinary Medicine Fall 2011 mag, called "Ain't Misbehavin'" with wee horns on 1st a & tail coming out of rt side of last n. Ward Schumaker is the artist, Genevieve Rajewski wrote. Sub-head, "with professional help, you can transform your bad kitty inton a mannerly feline".
I get this bcs our older niece, the one who's marrying in Ottawa in a week (yeek! but I did just pack her china, which we got appraised so we can pay the duty which may apply) attended Tufts, tho she wasn't a vet med major. Tufts also does the Catnip newsltr to which I've subscribed for some time.

Interesting that you posted this today (I downloaded the magazine). A co-worker of mine approached me today to see if we would be interesting in adopting one of her kitties. She got a sweet little girl kitty a couple of years ago, several years after her almost 20 year old kitty passed away. A little over a year ago a 3 or 4 month old feral kitty starting hanging around her house and the cats would "play" thru the front door side lights. She fed the cat and found him tame and eventually took him to the Vet and when no one in the neighborhood claimed him, she adopted him. He's a beautiful cat -- black with a very interesting coat and head shape -- we think he is at least part Egyptian Mau. Long story short, he has become a big bully and is very aggressive to the girl kitty. It's gotten to the point where he won't let Nala use the litter box (not sure how many she has), won't let her play with any one in the family -- he wants all the attention. The girl kitty is a small, sweet little cuddler kitty, and is just miserable.

We just aren't ready for a new cat yet, and when we are ready, we want more than one, so I'm not sure we would be able to add another cat later on if we did take him in.

Any suggestions on how my friend can rehabilitate the bully?

Mom had one cat of three that was a bit of a bully. She uses a string on a stick, it used to have feathers on it, to play with him and run him a bit ragged. Once she started doing that on a daily basis he quit picking on the other two cats. But, he wasn't as much of a bully as this cat sounds, so I don't know if it would work or not.

biohazard76: So I'm happily trying to sleep in this morning, and my oldest comes running into the bedroom and says "Dad, Cash is on the ceiling!!!"

In a fog, he drags me into the playroom and this is what I find:

My very own ceiling cat! My boys were concerned he was stuck, but I told them to leave him be, and sure enough after racing around the beams for a few minutes, he saw me walk into the kitchen and figured breakfast might be afoot, so he came down the same way he got up there. Go figure his cat brother Carey did the same thing about half an hour later.

Happy caturday,
docbio

Caturday peoples, I have a question.

My Mom is allergic to cats, any tips on how to thoroughly clean the house to make sure she isn't dying.

I'm planning on getting my long haired cats shaved, but should I bathe my other 2 shorthairs?

Also, I have this old couch, can I wash the cushion covers? I assume that why the cushions have a zipper on them.

Should I wash the carpet (stairs only) and couch, how do you wash a couch?

Any suggestions?

So glad to hear that Wolf is OK.
I had my own scare with Castle this week. The day after I got home from Lexington I was mowing the back paddock, I let the horses run around the back yard. I was almost done when I saw them in the feed room. Castle had gotten in the bin of beet pellets. These should be soaked with water before feeding as they swell to twice their size when they get wet. Poor Castle got choked and panicked. So did I. The poor vet had to deal with frantic calls from me and a half ton of scared horse. Castle got all the pellets out or down and after I sponged him off to cool him back down he began to graze. The vet said to watch him until he drank some water and was able to swallow it down. It was all over in the longest hour I have had in a long time.

My Iceberg Slim was like that. He was the sweetest, most cuddly, affectionate cat I ever had... but if anyone else came into my apartment he'd run and hide. He'd come out after a while and sniff them, and perhaps deign to let them rub his head a little, but then he'd retreat to a safe corner. And lord help anyone who tried to pick him up! At my vet's office they refused to treat him without sedation after he managed to leave a vet tech needing stitches. Whenever I brought him in the receptionist would call back, "Iceberg's here!" and new employees would come out all wide-eyed to see the world's most dangerous 19-year-old housecat, pictured below so you can see how fearsome he was:

I had a friend with asthma who asked me to always do that the day *before* she was coming over, to give any remaining dust and dander time to settle. Also, yes, make sure she takes some sort of allergy medication before she comes over.

And whatever you do, don't let her sit in the cat's favorite spot.

Binx turned 20 this tuesday, I am amazed. 3 years on insulin, better than 5 years on thyroid medication. She looks great, feels great. Been a little slow (as in a lot) in the mornings lately. Hard to tell how much is arthritis and how much if any is psychic wear and tear. There's no tiptoeing around it, she's an old kitty. I love having her around, but I do not want to make her tired of living for my sake. I've said from the beginning, when we took her in 8 years ago, that I would not keep her alive too long like my brother did with her predecessor.

Caturday always makes me stop and think about my first cat Muffin. We lived in a fairly rural area, and one day when I was about 4 years old, playing in the front yard while my mom was gardening and this little kitten came stumbling into the yard and then collapsed. I called my mom and she picked him up and took him to the vet. He had to stay there for about a week, he almost died, but then he was ours. It turns out that the old guy who lived up the street had cats and one had kittens. He kept them until they were old enough to give away, but he couldn't find anyone to take them. So he put them in a bag, drove them about a mile down the road, and threw the bag onto the side of the road. They got out, and apparently went looking for home. One by one they died; my father said he found dead kittens up and down the side of the road. Muffin made it to our house, about a mile away, and was apparently the strongest of the litter. The vet said he had never seen a kitten so close to death that survived.

My best Muffin story is when I was about 10 years old and I was walking back from my grandmother's house, which was next door but through the woods (we lived in a much wooded area). I thought I saw a big stick and I went to pick it up, but it turned out that it was a big snake. I'd say it was at least 5 or 6 feet long. We got a lot of snakes in the woods, even Eastern Diamondback rattlesnakes from time to time. This wasn't a rattler but it was a big thick snake. I think I yelled and then I froze. I looked up and saw Muffin running full speed- the full 2 legs off the ground gallop kind of running. He flew through the air and landed on the snake. The two of them got all wrapped up around each other, and I ran home. I got my dad and we went to see what happened. Muffin was sitting next to the snake, looking very proud and all covered in blood. We thought it was his blood until we looked at the snake- not a pretty sight; Muffin had torn it to shreds. He was like that- if any other animal came in the yard, be it a dog, fox, raccoon, or another cat, Muffin would attack it and drive it away. He never lost a single fight! He always followed me around as if he was protecting me. Even if a strange person came to the house he would stand between me and the person, looking mean until he was sure it was ok. But he was also the sweetest cat in the world; he would sleep on my lap for hours, and never bit or scratched me. I think he was just happy to have survived and found a home.

He's gone now, he lived to be 18 and although I have had other cats and have a cat now, Muffin will always be the gold standard to me!

Is your Mom going to be there awhile?

I'm allergic, too, but develop a tolerance for individual cats over 3-4 weeks. Not fun, but It's worth it. Though I love cats, I didn't have one because of the allergies. I'm still lazing in bed here with Birdie snoozing next to me. She made me sneeze and water when I first got her. Today, Birdie crashes with me most nights with zero problems.

Anyhow, if your Mom will be around your kitties for awhile, she might become tolerant.

Anyhow, if your Mom will be around your kitties for awhile, she might become tolerant.

/sorry to everyone who lost their fuzzballs
//am thankful Birdie and Hex are OK

She's only going to be here for a couple days :(. I just don't want her to have to sleep at a motel or anything.

She seems to be particularly sensitive to longhairs, I don't know if that's just because of the extra hair and dander, etc.

Your_Huckleberry: These are our girls.

This photo was taken about a month and a half ago during their visit to the vet. They are both gone now.
They were considered older cats, both were rescue kitties and both had health issues. The black cat was really never the same after this visit, she just faded quickly away. Stopped eating, stopped really doing anything. Within a week, we took her back to the vet, there was no light left in her eyes and it was her time.

And it sucked.

Two weeks later, we're told the white cat needs fluid injections every day. She is no longer eating very much now, either. At first, she seemed to be responding to the treatment. But then, after a week of treatments, she stopped eating completely. On Friday, the vet prescribed appetite enhancers. No effect. By Sunday night she was barely walk. On Monday, my wife finds her at home with a bloody nose-she'd probably fell on her flat little face. By Monday afternoon, she's back at the vet on last time.

A month and a day after the first, they are both gone. The white one had been with my wife longer than I have, they were a packaged deal. It took the black one months to warm up to us. We got her to be a 'buddy' to the other one, though it seemed that they more tolerated each other then actually cared. We joked that the little white devil probably didn't even notice that the other one was gone. Given how quick her own health changed, I don't know what she noticed of anything. But we did.

Losing two in a month powerful sucks.

/Hugs to all those that have lost a furbaby

A couple days before she comes, have a company come in and steamclean your rugs and furniture. (Not a bad thing to do anyway) They have anti-allergen chemicals that will control any remaining dander for a short period of time. Also, there is something called Alerpet C that you put on the cat which reduces the dander. I have a friend who is allergic and has 2 cats that he uses the Allerpet on - it seems to be good for about a week or 2 per dose.

Good luck
