I live in Iowa, and the sister of a friend of mine dated Kutcher before he was famous. Another friend of mine was his scoutmaster when he was a kid.

By both accounts, he's a glib little prick. Which is obvious. He was pretty funny as Kelso. Too bad it's the only character he can do effectively.

Just me or did he *kinda* look like Woody Harrelson in the pic on the video link?

Kutcher is unfunny and untalented, but seriously, that lame video is an outrage? It's possible some people are farking hyper-sensitive tools who go out of their way to find something to be outraged about. Those people annoy me way more than Kutcherdouche.

That was different. RDJ was satirizing how seriously method actors take their "craft". Kutcher is just doing brown face for the sake of portraying a character in a commercial.

See, I'll let it slide if it is funny. As it wasn't I am left to assume the whole point was just to be offensive.

This. A+K-brains was in brownface as a deliberate caricature, and about as repulsive as Mickey Rooney's caricature. I'm baffled as to how that chucklehead thought this was a good idea...

More to the point, though, PopChips should've stepped in - their snack food is supposed to be catering to a more health-conscious crowd. From my purely subjective viewpoint, the crowd to whom that snack is pitched tends to be more socially conscious, as well. So, what in the hell were they thinking?

Also, read the comments for that link - you can see a definite time today where, it appears, some white supremacist or teabagger group must've rallied the troops to support this kind of stupidity.

What about the "Two Black Swans" moment from and episode of 30 Rock a while back? I don't recall anyone saying that was racist. And it was actual black-face. However, when they did their live show last week, they did another scene which involved Jon Hamm playing the role of a white guy doing black-face. But this time, he was satirizing the ridiculous nature of it.

So why was Kutcher's costume bad? Are we at a point where only people who are unfunny assholes get called out for it, but if you're a popular actor and the show is legitimately funny you can get away with it because it's "satire" or in "good fun"? Personally, I think it's what you do when in costume that makes it tasteless. But I am curious what people think of these other examples relative to Kutcher.

Dont care about Ashton and this "outrage" ranks even lower on my interest. Someone needs to start actively mocking the Internet police and its picking of what it deems worthy of spittle.

You also forgot about the episode where Jenna and Tracy were trying to see who had it worse off: Women or Black men. Jenna was doing this whole jive, pretty over the type black stereotype in black face with Liz rushing in just in time to prevent some kind of PR disaster. And, hey, it was chuckle inducing if only for the cringe worthiness of the idea in general.

I didn't see these examples, so I can't speak to them, but to use Tropic Thunder as an example, Kirk Lazarus was a very flawed and damaged person, and was called out as racist in story (repeatedly and hilariously) by his coworkers.

Satire can be offensive or poorly done, but by it's very nature is attempting something different. "Here is someone in blackface. Doesn't this look wrong?" vs. "Hey Indian people, this is you. 'Durrr'"

2012-05-03 05:34:52 PM
If we're going to point to 30 Rock examples, let's not forget Jack vocally imitating Tracy's parents and the Hispanic woman who lived downstairs from them (to the horror of the NBC psychologist). A few scenes earlier, Liz had insisted to Carrie Fisher's character that nooooo, no, no, we can't do racial humour.

Here's a hint: Ben Kingsley's birth name is Krishna Pandit Bhanji.

======================================================
From wiki: Kingsley was born Krishna Pandit Bhanji in Snainton, North Yorkshire, England, the son of Anna Lyna Mary (née Goodman), an actress and model, and Rahimtulla Harji Bhanji, a medical doctor. Kingsley's father, born in Kenya, is of Gujarati Indian descent [...]

Yeah, he's about as Indian as Kutcher, so the point still stands.

I'd say Kutcher is more of a jackass than an asshole, and I really don't see what all the fuss is about. The guy is an actor after all. Well okay maybe that's a stretch, but he fancies himself an actor, and as such it is his job to play different parts, some of which might be of different cultures. What he did in the commercial is no more offensive than, oh say a British actor playing an American, with a stereotypical southern accent & 30 pounds overweight.

This whole controversy is a bunch of bullshiat.

Indian people have darker skin...he was doing an Indian character so he put on makeup to make his skin appear darker.

Who the hell cares?

"socially conscious" people - whatever the hell that means. Don't ask me - someone up-thread used the term.

Hmmm...so people dumb enough to find that racist are not dumb enough to find it funny. The spectrum is indeed wide.
