(BBC)   Jason Statham has now head-butted, auto-electrocuted, incomprehensibly-growled and chest-pounded his way to a billion-dollar career. Not bad for a street hawker from the streets of London   (bbc.co.uk) divider line 111

I like him in Jason Statham vehicles. Stupid movies with insane plots and big action, like crank 1/2, Transporter 1, so on.

I don't recall seeing him in much else, or in anything I would instantly label a giant bottle of suck, but that could just be my bad memory.

Bacon: What's that?
Samoan Joe's Barman: It's a cocktail. You asked for a cocktail.
Bacon: No. I asked you to give me a refreshing drink. I wasn't expecting a farking rainforest! You could fall in love with an orangutan in that!
Samoan Joe's Barman: You want a pint, you go to the pub.
Bacon: I thought this was a pub!
Samoan Joes Barman: It's a Samoan pub.

"I'm gonna need your shirt and your truck."
"Ok, do you want my virginity too?"
"If it's on the menu..."

Funniest line he never said lol.

I enjoy his movies. They're not high art but they are entertaining. At least it sounds like he knows what he is and isn't and doesn't take himself too seriously.

So did Amy Smart

I thought you were claiming he's earned a billion dollars during his career, but that is actually the box office totals of movies in which he has appeared. Bit of a difference there.

2012-05-03 09:57:51 AM
Didn't his career take off by doing a crazy awesome car commercial to the point where Mercedes decided to back an insane action movie featuring him and their product?

Statham movies are ridiculawesome. Everyone talks about how The Expendables was this big throwback to action movies of the 80s. Motherfarkers, have you not been paying attention to Jason Statham movies? Every single one of them is just one big 20-year time machine.

2012-05-03 10:00:55 AM
Lock Stock and Two smoking Barrels was brilliant, but Snatch looked forced. Good job by Brad Pitt, though.

Lock stock and two smoking barrels

, and Snatch

Clever plots, few brief spots of action, awesome dialogue.

I'll be Safe tonight, looks awesome. With Statham you know exactly what you're getting. He's not the best actor but he always brings excellent action scenes and choreography.

2012-05-03 10:05:29 AM
I find it really difficult to not enjoy him and his movies. Would love to sit down and have some drinks with the man. I bet he's got some stories.

2012-05-03 10:05:51 AM
I hear is also enjoyed by ze Germans.

2012-05-03 10:07:41 AM
Additional side note:

Why Alan Ford wasn't nominated for an Oscar for Bricktop (in Snatch) is beyond me.

2012-05-03 10:12:46 AM
I loved snatch and lock stock, also revolver!

2012-05-03 10:14:13 AM
Because Jason Statham has a fantastic quality about him, which is that he always looks like he's playing a role seriously even if it's the shiattiest movie possible. And he's just a badass.

Jason Statham does two kinds of movies... comedy action (Snatch, Lock Stock, Crank 1/2), and just action (Mechanic, War, The One, Expendables). I could only name a few of his movies that aren't guilty pleasures. Revolver got REALLY weird at the end, The One he wasn't the star of, and In the Name Of the King... well, was an Uwe Boll film.

Stupid movies with insane plots and big action are pretty much all he does, and I'm just fine with that.

You want to see him in something that's a huge bottle of suck, watch In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale. Uwe Boll movie. It's fun to watch in a 'it's so bad it's good' way.

Guilty pleasure for me, too. Partner is out of the house so it's time to fire up the media server, pour out a pint, pop some corn, and relax.

I LoLed at "Crank" so many times I thought it was a comedy, not an action movie.

i fear what could happen if Jason Statham starred in a Michael Bay movie

the location where it was filmed could be erased off the maps.

2012-05-03 10:21:04 AM
If I'm going to a Jason Statham movie, I'm not going to see him play Henry the Fifth. I'm going to see him fight, shoot, run, chase, escape, blow stuff up, and hook up with a hot girl.

There's not many bonafide action stars anymore. I thought Vin Diesel could fill that role, I thought Dewayne Johnson (aka The Rock) could fill that role. But both of them wanted to "branch out" into other types of roles. Statham is the action star for now and I for one am glad.

I'll second that. Crank 1 was hilarious. Nice to see people just cut loose all conventions and pretention of 'reality' in an action movie (because really, when is Die Hard or Bourne or Mission impossible even remotely reallistic) and just take it to the limit of crazytown.

Sort of related, but not really, anyone seen that new movie lockdown or whatever it was about the giant space prison? Looked like it could have been an amusingly stupid action movie, but haven't heard anything about it.

Nice how everyone who's said they like Statham has prefaced it with basically, "Look, I know his acting's for shiat, but..."

Dumber and dumber with each passing summer. When the apes do decide to rise up, it should be a farking cake walk.

I have never seen a movie with Jason Statham in it. I'm not saying that in a hipster-like 'I don't even own a TV' sort of way, I just haven't seen any of them.

Right. Let's sort the buyers from the spyers, the needy from the greedy, and those who trust me from the ones who don't, because if you can't see value here today, you're not up here shopping, you're up here shoplifting. You see these goods? Never seen daylight, moonlight, Israelite, fanny by the gaslight. Take a bag, c'mon take a bag. I took a bag home last night. Cost me a lot more than ten pound, I can tell you. Anyone like jewelry? Look at that one there. Handmade in Italy, hand-stolen in Stepney. It's as long as my arm. I wish it was as long as something else. Don't think because these boxes are sealed up, they're empty. The only man who sells empty boxes is the undertaker, and by the look of some of you lot today, I'd make more money with me measuring tape. Here, one price. Ten pound.

Have you ever watched a Steven Seagal film? Make all the Seagal lines sound like they're being spoken by Dick Van Dyke from "Mary Poppins," and boom, Statham film.

I'm a movie snob (more than 700 in my collection including foreign and indy films). But I'm not so much of a snob that I can't enjoy a good action movie. Action movies are great popcorn flicks. Movies where you can just turn off your brain and go into sensory overload.

I suppose you didn't like Drive either.

Haven't seen "Drive," regrettably. I hear good things about it, and I am wanting to see that one.

Big difference: "Drive" features actors who have been known to be able to act.

It's because of what they stand for. If you haven't had this explained already, let me tell you what Uwe's doing.

He's from Germany, and until recently there was a German tax law that rewarded investing in films, basically allowing someone to write off 100% of their investment in a film if you lost money. Basically Uwe pulled The Producers, making money by purposefully throwing out shiatty movies.

You notice Uwe's been really silent lately? Well that tax law was rewritten... Uwe can't exploit it anymore, so his career's pretty much done, everything he does is direct to DVD now.

I honestly don't understand the love for the Crank movies. I thought the first one was the biggest piece of shiat I've ever seen and I'm a big Statham fan. I don't suppose somebody could explain why they like it? I'm willing to give it another try.

Not a CSB, but: at HS graduation my two closest friends and I hugged it out, looked at eachother and said, "It's been emotional."

After a visit we still say that to each other.

/Still always say, "Alarm bells are ringing!"

Maybe you just didn't like it. I don't really think I can explain why I liked the movie, the movie doesn't have too many layers

My fave movie of his is Snatch, but really he plays the same character OVER and OVER again.

But he's so nice to look at, I don't really mind :-)

EyeballKid: Nice how everyone who's said they like Statham has prefaced it with basically, "Look, I know his acting's for shiat, but..."

He comes from the Clint Eastwood style of acting- he has one character that he plays the shiat out of. He's a fine actor, just without a great deal of range. Hell, maybe he has range, but he doesn't use it, nor does he need it.

OldManDownDRoad: I LoLed at "Crank" so many times I thought it was a comedy, not an action movie.

It was both. While the sequel wasn't as good, what I love about both films is that they start with an initial premise that's utterly idiotic, and then turns the "meh, fark it," dial up to 11 and just rips out whatever action sequence they felt they could do within their budget.

kroonermanblack: Sort of related, but not really, anyone seen that new movie lockdown or whatever it was about the giant space prison?

I haven't seen it yet, but by all accounts it's Escape from NY: IN SPACE, so- probably pretty good.

2012-05-03 10:58:52 AM
Jason Statham is the only one that make action movies like the ones that they popular in the 80s (think Cannon), and that people did not realise they really missed.

He found his niche, and he does it very good. More power to him.

2012-05-03 10:59:10 AM
He's probably the only "action star" currently working in the business today, with the possible exception of Milla Jovovich.
