Meh, here in Okla, there are lots of white Native Americans.

/the wife's great grandmother was full blood Cherokee

Michael Scott: Yeah, well, if you leave we'll only have two left. Yes. Enjoy. Absolutely. Namaste. Ok, well since I am leading this, let's get down to business and why don't I just kind of introduce myself, OK? Um. I am Michael and I am part English, Irish, German and Scottish. Sort of a virtual United Nations. But what some of you might not know is that I am also part Native American Indian.

Oscar: What part Native American?

Michael Scott: Two fifteenths.

Oscar: Two fifteenths, that fraction doesn't make any sense.

Michael Scott: Well, you know what, it's kind of hard for me to talk about it. Their suffering.

The hell?

You mean all this time I could have been claiming I'm native American?

1/32 Cherokee chief? I have more alcohol in my blood than he has true Cherokee blood. If I was Cherokee, and perhaps racist, I'd demand he leave. Only pure bloods allowed.

It takes 1/16 or better to get any federal benefits of being native american though.

my daughter is 1/32 blackfoot.

2/15 = 0.13333333333333333333333333333333333

1/8 +1/128 = 0.1328125. Close enough if you use 3 decimal places.

If we're going the Iroquois route you don't have to be of the blood, just raised to it.

They used to kidnap their neighbors during war to replace warriors killed in battle. The people they took would then become full Iroquois over time.

I don't think any of the outrage here has anything to do with actual Native American traditions.

So the Warren campaign proves she's a minority according to leaders of the exact minority in question. She was a professor at Harvard, chaired a federal oversight panel and was an advisor to the president which proves she is supremely qualified.

Therefore she is a sterling example of affirmative action boosting a child from practically nothing in Oklahoma to the highest levels of power.

What the fark is the problem?

good friend of mine is from Oklahoma, but is actually 1/4 Oujibwe (which is a great-lakes centered tribe) but could pass for a member of the "sour cream peoples". There was a whole damn lot of interbreeding between white folk and Indians in the early days of this country, particularly among tribes like the Cherokee who had basically assimilated European culture

An ex-girlfriend of mine had a grandfather who was full-blooded Chocktaw and another grandparent who was half Chickasaw. She didn't consider herself "Native American" because both of those grandparents died before she was born and there was essentially zero cultural transmission to her from either one.

She was hot, though, so she had that going for her.

Which was nice.

According to Wiki it's still not proven 100% that her great, great, great grandmother was Cherokee, so it's still in question. Also, looking at her early biography it certainly doesn't seem like affirmative action had one iota to do with her successes - it looks like she simply took advantage of it after she became a lawyer. So, I'm not sure that "sterling example" is the right phrase to use.

my daughter is 1/32 blackfoot.

I read somewhere recently that now that many tribes actually have money (from gambling and other sources) the tribes are becoming much stricter about who they accept as members, going so far as to disown people whose families have claimed tribal membership for generations, even though they had no genetic connection.

I too am 1/32. No free money for me.

Mom got free money to get her RN license though.

No one in my family looks remotely American Indian except for my cousin (one of over 2 dozen cousins just on mom's side of the family) who freakishly looks like she just walked off a reservation.

Other telling family trait was my grandfather on my mom's side had jet black hair (no dye) into his 70's. (no such luck for me, barely into my 30's and I've already found gray hairs)

I don't think so. C.f. phritz's theorem: All proportions of genetic heritage can be expressed only as a rational number x/(2^n), where x and n are positive integers.

For the record you don't need any American Indain blood in you to be Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw or Chicksaw. Just have a black enslaved ancestor who was property of these nations and you get full tribal rights. If want a mixed up tribe look at the Seminoles most are part black. Heck name means runaway.

There would be almost no Cherokee left if you did that. In addition to being murdered, robbed, poisoned and given diseases like other native Americans, the Cherokee have also been virtually bred out of existence, if you set "pure blood" as a standard of legitimacy.

Wikipedia isn't a great purveyor of current events. The Boston Herald itself mentioned another connection:

The campaign also hastily produced an undated newspaper clip last night from the Muskogee Sunday Phoenix detailing a "Mrs. James P. Rowsey" - who they said is Warren's cousin - and her involvement with the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, which is dedicated to preserving Native American art.

"Mrs. James P. Rowsey was Elizabeth's first cousin - shared the grandparents in question," a campaign official said in the statement.

So both Warren and another family member were under the impression that they were part-Native American. Warren clearly believed it herself. You couldn't say there would have been another non-minority individual who would have been more qualified--Warren's own accomplishments proves that.

So what's the point? She thought she was a minority, she got affirmative action and she succeeded. Anyone can oppose affirmative action but everyone pressing this is too cowardly to do so. So they claim she's not really a minority despite evidence to the contrary.
