While I'm all for gay marriage, I think that first chart is complete BS. I seriously doubt they surveyed for gay marriage in the 1920s, and I'm even more doubtful that 1990 a majority of Americans supported gay marriage.

You know how I know that you don't know what "cohort" means?

I was pretty sure I knew what the word cohort meant until you posted what is either a fundamental misunderstanding of the word cohort, or a fundamental misunderstanding of how studies should be performed.

I'm gonna have to ask for your explanation here.

A cohort (from the Latin cohors, plural cohortes) was the basic tactical unit of a Roman legion following the reforms of Gaius Marius in 107 BC.

It's simple demographics. Most younger people support gay marriage and gay families. Most younger people react negatively to those standing in the way of equal rights for gay people. The only surprising thing is that more businesses are not taking this stance.

The cohort date is the date of birth, not the date the poll was taken. Likely, all these people were polled at the same time, then the statisticians divided the results by the date of the participants' birth.

In statistics and demography, a cohort is a group of subjects who have shared a particular event together during a particular time span, such as birth decade.

Totally. The "social conservatives" are once again fighting a losing battle and will end up on the wrong side of history. Just like with slavery, suffrage, civil rights, etc.

Well that makes a lot more sense. Kinda a silly title and a label on the X axis woulda helped. Alternatively, you could have taken a cohort of people, asked them in 1920, 1930, 1940 up through 1990 and made that graph to show how a cohort of people have shifted their views over time. Anyway...

Now I'm not saying anything for sure, but I would like to point out that there is a Fathers Day, and it falls in June. There will also be a June catalog from JCPenney. It will have pictures in it - quite probably pictures of fathers. Almost certainly more than one. I've said too much.

/I work at JCPenney corporate, so I'm really getting a kick...

CSB incoming...

I worked at Sears corporate, in the marketing department, years and years ago. We would get the occasional letters from cranks with 'tarded complaints, but it was rarely a big deal.

One day, my secretary screams out in agony, bursts into sobs, runs from her desk and doesn't return for 2 days. She had opened a letter that contained vivid, close-up, color photos of an abortion in progress.

This sweet, kind woman was (and is) a good catholic girl... and she was 6 months pregnant at the time. She became so upset by what she saw, she was afraid she would miscarry.

Apparently, Sears had run some ads on CBS, which had shown some made-for-TV "movie of the week" that included a character who had an abortion. In total, we received 4 more mailings from the same source over the ensuing two weeks, before the certified cease-and-desist letter was drafted, sent and received.

This probably isn't nearly as insightful as I think it is, but after this and the Ellen Degeneres blow up, it seems like JCP may be positioning itself to find a market among gays.

Also, something can be said for the men's department and the amount of butch lesbian garb that can be found there.

I cannot tell your gender by your Fark alias, but mine's female. I hadn't been in a J.C. Penny for well over a decade until one of my nieces took me to one recently. I would say the stuff I saw in the Women's Department was far above K-Mart and Walmart. I saw career separates that were on a par with Macy's but at half the price. I was really surprised that the cut and construction were as nice as they were. The fabrics were also better, and the color choices were very modern. A fully-lined lace tank dress at Penny's was $30, and it would be suitable for work with a jacket or a shrug. A lace tank dress at Macy's was $100, and it could only be worn for evening.

I agree. I shop there fairly often because I find their quality to be far superior to K-Mart and Walmart, and with the coupons they are forever giving me I honestly don't pay much more than I would at either of those two places. I buy a lot of my daughter's clothes there, as well, and I find they hold up very well.

In light of that ad, though, I'm thinking my daughter and I need to make a shopping trip in the near future. Good for them!

Humean_Nature: AFKobel: While entertaining, I'm always afraid the Statue of Liberty/Lady Justice passionate embrace is a sexual assault in the making...

What, because of the blindfold? They're just a little kinky.

Exactly. Because of the blindfold.

Justice is blind. As such, I can not be sure by looking at the photo that Lady Justice knows the soft luscious lips she is passionately kissing belong to another female.

Also, Lady Justice is holding the scales of justice in her left hand, so its clear that she is not gently and seductively caressing any other party of Lady's Liberty's firm, supple anatomy ... with her left hand at least. So, that gives me no insight into Lady Justice's knowledge of the sex of the person who is kissing her.

I can't exactly tell where her right hand is.... It might be firmly grasping the sword of justice, fastened to her right hip, clutching the firm steel to keep from crying out in her lover's embrace. She might be hoping that the hardness of the sword hilt will be equal to that of her impending lovers sword. Believing the kisser is a man. Or, as far as I know, her right hand could be gently, expertly and knowingly sliding under the folds of Lady Liberty's... toga... caressing the gentle curve of her belly as it glides up to the curves of her chest, sending waves of pleasure over her skin, as her porcelain fingers move towards Lady Liberty's stiffening areolas.

Their tongues intertwine as their loose clothing tumbles to the floor.... left only with their bondage-like headgear....

Look, can we get a drawing or an MS paint of what's going on about 10 minutes after this picture?

That will give me a better idea of whether its consensual.

Reverend J: While I'm all for gay marriage, I think that first chart is complete BS. I seriously doubt they surveyed for gay marriage in the 1920s, and I'm even more doubtful that 1990 a majority of Americans supported gay marriage.

Bzzt.

UNC_Samurai: Is the chart referring to people born in those decades? That makes a LOT more sense.

Ding.

Duke Phillips' Singing Bears: They surveyed by cohort. I think that means they asked people "When were you born and do you support the right for gays to marry?" That's how you get that number.

Sorta. The General Social Survey asked a LOT of questions, of a lot of people; this is what you get when you break out the data for those two questions.

xanadian: I'm assuming that's why the chart says "by cohort."

Ding.

Reverend J: Ah, that makes a lot more sense, still would like the reference to the poll or the aggregate of polls that number is from.

NORC General Social Survey. I think this particular chart was from an aggregate of the data from the 2004-2010 surveys. The variable code is "MARHOMO"; birth cohort is COHORT, but this uses a recode from that, grouping by decades instead of year.

HMS_Blinkin: You know how I know that you don't know what "cohort" means?

To be fair, it's a pretty common mistake; and the "BY Cohort by Decade" isn't the clearest phrasing.

qorkfiend: A cohort (from the Latin cohors, plural cohortes) was the basic tactical unit of a Roman legion following the reforms of Gaius Marius in 107 BC.

lennavan: Kinda a silly title and a label on the X axis woulda helped.

Yeah. The chart's automatically generated by the Berkley SDA interface tool from the search query.

There's probably a better term for "Cohort by Decade"; as that's the title on a recoded variable, it's pretty easily changed. On the other hand, the confusion seems to get people to sit up, pay more attention, ask questions, and maybe better understand the data better after the answers? I'm not sure if it's more useful as-is.

Probably because if profit is the motive, then acceptance is not. The JC Penny people can then vote against gay marriage and strip same sex couples or gay citizens of all sort of rights, while they prosper with their ad campaign. It wouldn't even entail cognitive dissonance. it is simply a matter of making money at work while being true to their ethics in politics. taking a person's money has nothing to do with accepting their rights or equality.

Any other dumbass bigoted questions or will you stop you stupid now?

I will be comforted with that mental image, a dramatic climax involving a JCPenny district manager ripping out the throat of an OMM spokesmoron, while Rev. Donald Wildmon looks on in impotent fury.

Bennie Crabtree: Lionel Mandrake: Apparently, JCP has decided that appealing to the gay community is more profitable than bowing to bigots.

Free market in action!

/why do you hate capitalism OMM?

Probably because if profit is the motive, then acceptance is not. The JC Penny people can then vote against gay marriage and strip same sex couples or gay citizens of all sort of rights, while they prosper with their ad campaign. It wouldn't even entail cognitive dissonance. it is simply a matter of making money at work while being true to their ethics in politics. taking a person's money has nothing to do with accepting their rights or equality.

Any other dumbass bigoted questions or will you stop you stupid now?

If JC Penney is like every other clothing retailer in this country, they've probably got a disproportionate number of out gay men in management so I doubt that this is just profit motive at play.

i will never understand the reason people have problems with gays -- they will never be fully honest about it because they know their reasons will make them look like small minded bigoted f*cksticks. goddamnit just get over your hate already and let people live their lives, it doesn't directly affect you so leave it alone. i am going to make the assumption that these "one million moms" need something to do between their fake real estate jobs, driving their kids around town and chasing their Xanax with vodka.
