While I'm all for gay marriage, I think that first chart is complete BS. I seriously doubt they surveyed for gay marriage in the 1920s, and I'm even more doubtful that 1990 a majority of Americans supported gay marriage.

Is the chart referring to people born in those decades? That makes a LOT more sense.

I'm assuming that's why the chart says "by cohort." *shrug* Kind of like, by peer group, I guess.

Why do we need to drag bigots kicking and screaming forward to a better society again? Why cant we just leave them in their hate and we just move on without them?

Well they certainly help with the 'visible' part, but I think they may hurt our chances of being a part of 'polite society.' ;)

Yeah, well, meh,

LucklessWonder: Look, homosexual couples frequently fall into the DINK (dual income, no kids) marketing segment. That shiat is like catnip to retailers, of course they're going to appeal to that demographic.

Agreed. We've realized the same thing in the auto industry. DNKs have the highest car turnover out there aside from fleets (and fleets are low margin sales). So when the homophobes from buttfarkistan, who buy a new pickup ever 15 years, send us letters threatening a boycott it just gets ignored.

The homophobe market is now the expendable one. The homosexuals have money and the mainstream consumer (namely the younger ones, aka our new customer base) don't give a shiat if our company offers benefits to same sex couples.

2012-05-03 10:18:26 AM

dletter: What is the "goal" of groups like OMM? Yes, I know they don't want gays to have legal rights, I get that. But, actions like this.... you want society to ignore them? You want society to try to make them all commit suicide? You want to burn them at the stake? What is your end game here? "OMG, you actually gave RECOGNITION to a LESBIAN!!" Is that where we are?

That's exactly their goal - shaming those who would treat such a sin as homosexuality as acceptable.

You're seeing the fitful struggles of the last generation that believes homosexuality should be castigated. The generations ahead of them have already realized that homosexuality is (and always has been, despite the collective social experiment conducted by various organized religions) part of human nature, and should not be treated with moral and ethical outrage. This is most likely the last generation of federal, state, and local government officials that have the ability to repress the social acceptance of homosexuality, as with abortion and other manufactured moral evils.

So, there's a full-court press by anyone who can mobilize a group, no matter how small or inaccurately named, to somehow claim that they represent a plurality of constituents to someone in power, someone that can actually do what they cannot, because the clock is ticking on faith-based stupidity.

They surveyed by cohort. I think that means they asked people "When were you born and do you support the right for gays to marry?" That's how you get that number.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense, still would like the reference to the poll or the aggregate of polls that number is from.

Duke Phillips' Singing Bears: Look, angries, the queers have money too, and you're just going to have to get over it. In fact, the queerboy homo gays have TONS of disposable income, and they love to spend it on sh*t that men typically don't spend their money on. They're a f*cking goldmine. I assume the queerlady homo girls double up huge on domestic sh*t as well. A company has a lot more to gain by marketing to them than catering to angry old biddies that haven't bought a new pair of underwear since Nixon was in short pants.

Dual Income No Kids = Ka Ching.

JCP has obviously figured it out.

/Wondering now if lesbian couples are annoyed when referred to as DINKs or mostly just bemused.

Last time OMM contacted JC Penney store managers, we were brushed off. Some even experienced in person the store manager saying "Thank you" and walking off while their customer and our concerned members were in mid-sentence. OMM has been told that JCP corporate office told store managers to say "Thank you" and then walk away. If they want our business, then we will not be ignored!

Oh JC Penney. If you had stores in my country, I would buy from you just for this.

It's the perfect response - complete dismissal. It just makes OMM even more mad and impotent.

NeverDrunk23: Why do we need to drag bigots kicking and screaming forward to a better society again? Why cant we just leave them in their hate and we just move on without them?

Because they vote. And they're VERY busy trying to drag everybody else towards bigotry by using obfuscation, manipulation, and outright lying.

All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. (paraphrased, horribly)

If I'm mathing this right, that makes them .0095% of the US population. That makes them so irrelevant in terms of JCP's marketing plans I'm surprised they didn't instruct their store managers to simply slap them instead of thanking them when confronted by their anger.

...but they've gone double extra too far with this picture, which, in their words, is akin to the store "taking sides" in a "culture war."

I agree with the One Million Moms on this one. JC Penny is taking sides in a culture war. However, they're on the morally correct side that is going to win, so I'm completely in favor of what JC Penny is doing.

Of course, the cynical side of me thinks that JC Penny just sees the writing on the wall and figures this is an easy way to score some free advertising and attention of the growing number of regular, average American consumers who are increasingly in favor of equal treatment for the LGBT community before the population is so in favor of it that coming out and taking a side on the issue will be a mundane event.

Then again, even if that is entirely their reason for it, anything to piss off a bunch of bigots is a good thing, so I'd still be okay with what they're doing.

A significant portion of the 'polite society' are folks who think you people should know your place and quietly accept it. And they vote for like-minded lawmakers.

Kome: ...but they've gone double extra too far with this picture, which, in their words, is akin to the store "taking sides" in a "culture war."

The only people who think this is a 'culture war,' are people against gay rights, or just against gay anything. The only thing JC Penny did is supposedly advertise to lesbians by simply acknowledging that lesbians exist, and may shop at their store. This is all assuming those women are supposed to be a couple to begin with.

2012-05-03 10:26:16 AM

Mr_Fabulous: FTFA: Last time OMM contacted JC Penney store managers, we were brushed off.

Store managers. They contacted... local store managers for a response.

Holy hell. Really? REALLY? As if there wasn't enough reason to loathe, investigate and keep an eye on this group.

Forget "hate group," to me, this makes them terrorists: They're not blowing themselves up (yet?), but they are certainly terrorizing innocent, powerless victims.

I hope there's a special ring of hell for people granted guaranteed power by polite society who then use it to abuse the powerless-by-circumstance -- the "customer is always right!"-types taking out their misdirected anger on people powerless to defend themselves:

-- rude to the waiter
-- biatchy at the clerk
-- demanding and superior to the coffee guy

That's bad enough, and shamefully unavoidable, it seems.

But, hysterical hate ranting at local-store managers who are not only powerless to respond but also completely uninvolved in the marketing design inspiring the irrational hate-rage? Coordinated by a national hate-organizing body? Seriously?

I'd already planned on trying to find some reason to shop at JCP... now I'm thinking I'll find one -today- and go in, demand to see the manager on duty... and then offer to give him/her a hug and a six pack of beer.

Man. As if there weren't reasons enough to loathe this group. I fully support anyone's rights to organize and voice their opinion, whatever it is, but adding the twist of "and go abuse innocent people who can't fight back" to the movement / agenda / rallying really pushes it beyond mindless and inexcusable hate and towards inciting violence (berating a powerless manager is at least some form of emotional violence, if nothing else) and terrorism.

I'd almost pity them, if their anger and noise wasn't based on a desire to dehumanize other people.

Ellen Degeneres has made an extremely successful career based on that one idea. She came out early and just remained incredibly pleasant. She was never a great comic. Her standup was mundane at best. But she's had two TV shows and is the face of a major US corporation. Plus, she was in finding Nemo, and that's awesome. But if she hadn't come out when she did, I doubt we'd still know her name.

I think it is because that use of the word "cohort" is a fairly unknown usage of the term that mostly only statistical math geeks understand..... it would probably be better off changing the header of that chart to say "By decade of birth".

Humean_Nature: JCPenney puts out a monthly catalog, and this catalog usually includes a spread for celebrating whatever holidays fall in that month. These ladies are in the May book because of Mothers Day.

Now I'm not saying anything for sure, but I would like to point out that there is a Fathers Day, and it falls in June. There will also be a June catalog from JCPenney. It will have pictures in it - quite probably pictures of fathers. Almost certainly more than one. I've said too much.

I love this type of insider info. One of the reasons I come to Fark.

Somehow, I think the, um, butthurt will be much greater when it's two gay men as opposed to two gay women. Just a prediction.
