Because people can relate to Michelle Obama. She didn't get rich by marrying into money. Like Obama said last week, they married into debt. This issue isn't that Ann Romney wears an expensive shirt, it's that her stated role in the campaign is to court the female vote and this just ties into the meme that the Romney's are out of touch. Is it petty? Yes. Will it be forgotten by next week? Yes. Is it fair game? If the GOP is going to mock Michelle Obama for having too much muscle tone in her arms, then yes, a thousand dollar shirt is fair game.

Phoenix_M: So why would someone voluntarily give up a law license

People who are not actively practicing law go inactive all the time. If they don't they keep having to do things like taking Continuing Legal Education classes. Going inactive is a voluntary and temporary measure. It does not in any way constitute "giving up" membership to the bar.

Voluntarily inactive means just that, they have gone on inactive status by choice. The "court ordered" part in the passage about insurance is simply how it is worded. It does not mean that the court forced them to go on inactive. There is no "forced inactive" status or anything like that. Most bar associations either suspend or revoke membership to the bar for disciplinary action. They do not order someone to voluntarily go inactive. There is nothing in the document you have shown that indicates she would have been disbarred, in fact that notion is directly contradicted by what you linked.

You've never had any exposure at all to the legal profession, have you? It is really cute how you are dredging up a weak and thoroughly debunked attack from four years ago. Hey, maybe you can post that fake receipt of Michelle ordering lobster. Haven't seen that one in a while.
2012-05-03 04:02:20 PM
2 votes:
TL, DR above?

The court ordered MO's license to be put on inactive status only after and because Michelle Obama requested it and NOT because the court independently ordered her license suspended due to some sort of malfeasance or ethical breach on her part as some people seem bent on trying to assert.

Barbara and David Mikkelson (AKA Snopes) are not the final authority on everything Michelle Obama surrendered her law license in 1993 that's a fact. Up until 2009 the State bar of Illinois website clearly stated the MRO had surrendered her law license pending disbarment.
Michelle Obama does not have a licenses to practice law in any state.

Because she voluntarily made it go inactive moran. If she was facing disbarment she would have been disbarred.

Read this in David Attenborough's voice:

"Ah yes...here we observe the native behaviours of the North American Yellow-Breasted biatch-face. Note how she attempts to convince the others that she is one of them. Though known as an invasive species, once established with a nesting partner, she will often pretend that she is one of the original inhabitants. Often, the male Yellow-breasted biatch-Face will swoop down from upon his perch to take nesting materials away from other birds without regard for their safety and survival. For that reason, the Yellow-Breasted biatch-Face is often one of the more successful species in the North-Eastern United States, though seen as savage and cruel opportunists by many."

Charity?

Wanna rephrase that?

Here, lemme try.

What insanely large sum of monies (mostly in the form of stock garnered through Bain) are the Romney's compelled to tithe to their cult like church every year?

See also: How many millions did said cult like church (that the Romney's are leaders in) give over to a propaganda campaign against civil rights for gay citizens in California last year?

For extra points: "Anybody imagine for even a split second that Romney's run in 2012 here and his need to appeal to the RW fundie base wasn't factored into that decision to support Prop H8?"

TL,DR?

Ann Romney is not better than me.

But we were talking about shirts, right?

Bottom line? Politics is perception on many significant levels.

Ann Romney, Mitt's stated "go to" gal on appealing to the lady voters (who seem to have taken a sudden, massive aversion to the GOP this electoral cycle for some reason) appearing on a morning talk show in a 1000 dollar shirt does rather posit the question "Is that fashion choice a good decision in terms of connecting with the moderate and independent votes than win elections?"

My take? No, not particularly.

YMMV, of course.

Since when is Ron Paul the voice of equal rights? He's the voice of "The states can take away all the rights they want just as long as the federal government doesn't."

He's also the voice of the Gold Standard, the voice against women's reproductive health rights (federal personhood amendment. Yea. That was Ron Paul) and he's often the sole crazy vote on totally harmless resolutions.

I don't care that she spends $990 on one shirt. I'd spend that much if I liked a shirt and had disposable income to throw around, but I do care that she spends $990 on a ridiculously ugly shirt. That shirt represents a certain sort of bad taste that seems to show up a lot in middle aged wealthy women--they wear hideously ugly prints that seem to exist only so that other people can recognize that it's an expensive item.

That shirt definitely falls into the category of things that prove that "expensive" does not equal "not hideous and/or tacky."

I'll be perfectly honest and admit I didn't know one could drop $900 on a shirt. I've *seen* $900 suits, and I've owned $900 cars. My kitchen has a $900 fridge. (affectionately known as "pleasepleaseplease be the only appliance that breaks this year pleasepleaseplease")

Frankly, with a couple kids and a mortgage, if I found a spare Jackson in my pocket, I'd be thinking of a week's worth of lunches before I'd be thinking of shirts.

But I gotta wonder, what does it feel like to wear a $900 shirt? Do they tailor it like a suit jacket? Is it signed by an artist? I think it's safe to say I'll never know the answer to these things.
