2 feet long isn't a sword. It's barely a ninjato

He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, black leather coat, black T-shirt, and black or blue jeans.

I'm surprised they were able to see him at all.

One Bad Apple: 2 feet long isn't a sword. It's barely a ninjato

Interesting fact: ninjato are an anachronism. Actually ninja used a variety of weapons, but none of them were in fact unique to the ninja themselves. They used the same weapons as the samurai in pitched battle because hell, half the really famous ninja WERE samurai.

The weapon in this case would be a wakizashi, the shorter of the two blades carried by most samurai.

What is it with hillbillies and random psycho criminals always using samurai-type swords? How come they never use broadswords or scimitars or rapiers or claymores?

I clicked on your profile. If you aren't really in Tokyo I would predict you to be a virgin. Then again you could depict a Japanese oriented SCA group. And still a virgin.

Western weapons tended to use weight to their advantage to bash through armor. Hard to carry a 40lb broadsword everywhere you go.

Katana are comparativly light, so are more likely to be taken to an outside location where the crazy people can get arrested with them.

I was half expecting this to involve a guy that my friends and I refer to as "Buck Wild." He's been known to wander town with swords and a variety of knives and throwing stars.

Yeah, little bit of pain never hurt anybody. If you know what I mean. Also, I think knives are a good idea. Big, fark-off shiny ones. Ones that look like they could skin a crocodile. Knives are good, because they don't make any noise, and the less noise they make, the more likely we are to use them. shiat 'em right up. Makes it look like we're serious. Guns for show, knives for a pro.

They probably saw Kill Bill and said to themselves "I gotta get me one o' them!", and then proceeded to pay $150 for a cheap replica that would break if they ever tried to cut anything harder than a pillow.

European longswords are typically closer to 3.5lb but I see others have already corrected this error. In any case they were never designed to 'bash through armor', they had other weapons for that.

Yup, and astonishing fun fact for getting the "katanas are awesome!" crowd worked up.

Yes, the metal in a katana was folded thousands of times in a true labor of love that took many months to forge each and every sword. And they were... almost exactly as good as the medieval european longswords that could be cranked out in a couple of days. Why is that, you ask your monitor as if you were a crazy person? Easy, Europe had access to higher grade iron ore. The ore found in Japan is of notoriously low grade and very prone to cracking and shattering. Folding the metal simply made it so the cracks didn't line up as easily, making it more difficult to break the bad metal. In Europe, they had easy access to high grade iron without the impurities that caused the Japanese metal to crack at the drop of a hat. So, while European swordsmiths didn't put nearly as much effort into the average sword as the Japanese did, the superior metal let them get virtually identical results in terms of quality.

Also, the wakizashi being an intentionally forged weapon is a late development. Remember I mentioned how the low grade iron used in katana was prone to snapping? Yeah, you ever look at a wakizashi and notice it looks just like a katana, only with a shorter blade? Thats because it was. Samurai were depicted carrying multiple swords because of how often they would break, but if the sword snapped far enough down to still be useful, the samurai would simply keep using it, and the wakizashi was born.

Eh, 2.5 to 3 if using late period steel. The earlier and crappier steels would be around 3.5.

You want to bash through armour and don't have a pick or hammer? Mordenschlag. The quillon isn't just to keep you from breaking your hand on shield faces, it also serves as an improvised military pick.

I don't know Joe Valenti.
