mongbiohazard: phedex: Glenford: darch: I am in no WAY a fan of rap, but have ALWAYS thought Wu Tang brought a fresh perspective to the genre. SO much better and interesting than all the macho, crotch-grabbing horses**t that dominates most rap.

I'm with you, I like *good* rap/hip hop not the shiat you described. Groups like
A Tribe Called Quest
De La Soul
Arrested Development

You forgot Jurassic 5, only put out a couple albums but they both were great hip hop albums that were outside the norm, especially when they first came out.

Hell yes to all of that.

And my CSB: I used to work with this really tall, gorgeous "sistah" in a knife store in the mall here in the DC suburbs.

Then one day farking Biz Markie came in looking for her and we decided she just might have been telling the truth all along. Miss you Yolanda!

If nothing else, Biz is a local. Lives in Laurel.

/I'd add MF DOOM and Little Brother to the list as well, personally.

People who say hip hop/rap sucks have been listening to the wrong bands. The commercial stuff is garbage - the underground is where all the really creative shiat happens

Don't leave out:

Cage

Cage and Tame One as Leak Brothers doing a whole PCP themed album.

Cage and Camu Tao as Nighthawks doing a Sly Stallone movie themed album.

Aesop Rock.

Aesop Rock with John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats.

This is my bedroom wall.

Communist_Manifesto: Gunny Highway: EMCGuy: Wait, didn't those douche bags crash the stage at some awards show?

That was ODB. Whether he is a douche bag or not is debatable.

I think all we can say about ODB is that he was high on something all the time. Shimmy Shimmy Ya

The thing is, regardless of whether or not he was high or whether or not crashing the Grammy's is a "good" thing, ODB was entirely right. Puff Daddy's "No Way Out" is a farking joke, cashing in on the death of Biggie. The beats weren't original, Puffy didn't write the lyrics, and the only stuff that really made that album worth any rotation was the opportunity to hear previously unreleased Big stuff.

"Wu-Tang Forever," on the other hand, was the pinnacle of Wu-Tang, and, as far as I'm concerned, the end of their legacy. "36 Chambers" was great because of how different it was at the time, but in retrospect, it doesn't really compare lyrically or production-value-wise to the Wu stuff that came afterwards (it'd be like comparing early Beatles records to "Sgt. Pepper's"). It got the gang back together to create a masterpiece, and it took a shiat on everything else that was coming out during that period.

(As much as I love "Forever," though, my actual favorite is "Ironman." I started smoking pot daily when I was 17, and that had album had been out for about 6 years, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I did "Cuban Linx" or "Liquid Swords" until I'd be getting high and listening to it straight through a million times, trying to decipher the lyrics. "Forever" was comparable in that way: A lot of the stuff can be enjoyed just for its catchiness, but there's a different layer underneath.)

My buddy mad a mix for me when I was 16 entitled, "It's The Wu Comin' Through." It was one of those albums that was played to death. I still have the unusable disc in a binder for old times sake.

Gunny Highway: No_Sir: Without a doubt my favorite Wu album.

Supreme Clientele, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and Blackout! are awesome

I don't consider Blackout to be part of the Wu discography. Erick Sermon did most of the production work on that album, plus Red & Meth had their own separate career from WTC.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is probably in my top 3 Wu albums.

Supreme Clientele just didn't do it for me. I definitely preferred Ironman.

No_Sir: Supreme Clientele just didn't do it for me.

It's best listened to from start to finish. The album is definitely better than the sum of it's parts.

Loved the Wu ever since Liquid Swords came out.
Is this where we post our favorite lyrics? Good.

GZA, 4th Chamber
Disciplinary action was a fraction of strength / that made me truncate the length one-tenth
Woofers stomp, tweeters hiss like air pumps / RZA shaves the track, ni**az caught razor bumps
Scarred tryin to figure who invented / this unprecedented, opium-scented, dark-tinted
Now watch me blow him out his shoes without clues / cause I won't hesitate to detonate, I'm short fused

That does explain why he was wandering around Montgomery Mall and stopped in to see if my coworker was working that day!

And I don't know Little Brother, but love MF Doom so I'll definitely agree with you there..... and will be checking out Little Brother later on.

At the height of their fame and glory, they turned on one another
Each struggling in vain for ultimate supremacy
In the passion and depth of their struggle
The very art that had raised them to such Olympian heights was lost
Their techniques vanished.

/RZA maybe foreseeing the fall of Wu-Tang and the golden age of hip-hop.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't going for obscurity, unless you consider Ric Flair and a picture of Tang (to represent "Tang") obscure.

Mincer: Kinda gave up on the Wu aroung 2001/02.

8 Diagrams was...interesting (I liked it, many fans didn't), and Raekwon has had some quality releases lately (OBCL 2, Shaolin v Wu-Tang, and Wu-Massacre w/ GFK and Meth). Iron Flag was bad though, I agree with you there.

Own them all. Tical is highly underrated, and 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version deserves more love for "Brooklyn Zoo" alone. ...Cuban Linx 2 is almost--almost--as great as the first one.

I kind of agree but The Pick, the Sickle, and the Shovel had it's moments despite abandoning most horror elements and having Prince Paul barely being involved. I liked how they looped acoustic riffs. It reminded me of Hieroglyphics. The Night the Earth Cried, Repentance Day, and Da Bomb are pretty solid tracks. Their worst album is easily Nightmare in A-Minor.

6 Feet Deep is a classic.
