Serious point here. Not that I'll ever forgive him for forsaking those perky points Ashley Judd pointed at him. Is my point made yet?

Every beer company Internet contest tries to force me to join Facebook. All these social media sites try to force you to join and then convince you to click, click, click all day long. It's fundamentally evil. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to playing cow clicker.

Why does Wheaton have a tag when he hasn't posted here in years? He's still around, I saw him on reddit not to long ago. Why did he bail on Fark?

Seriously? I take it you aren't following him on facebook. Talk about a whiny biatch. He's constantly complaining about something.

Who the fark cares?

This whole "like" thing went off the rails a long time ago. I don't care. You're not worthy of me liking you.

A recent ad I saw on TV says "Get $25 off if you 'like' us on Facebook". Forget it - I'll find someone else to do business with.

And to be honest I'm not even sure who Wil Wheaton is. I'm aware that he's somehow involved in the entertainment business but I have no idea who he is and I don't really care. I guess that picture up-thread gives me a clue. He was the bratty little kid from ST:TNG and the guy with the stupid sweater that I've seen on Fark before? Is that it? I care even less now.

I get the feeling that Google put some sort of Space Cookies on his drive so it kept him logged in even when he wasn't logged in (or it set the default profile as a G+ User.) Which is a biatch move all by itself. When " Don't Be Evil" doesn't suit your fancy anymore, hey go the whole nine furlongs and start blending baby kittens in boiling hyperbole.

Same here. I'm curious if it's a 1-in-10 thing that they just try to slip in now and again? In which case, that's not a big deal.
Or maybe it's something else.
What are you talking about Wil Wheaton.

I would never have thought watching Wil Wheaton play board games would make for good video. But, because of my ongoing crush on Felicia Day > The Guild > Geek & Sundry, I ended up really liking it.

As to the Google+ feature, my guess is they're rolling it out over time, and not all users are seeing it yet. That's the way Google does things.

Google hate to admit their social networks suck monkey balls. What is Google plus like the 4th time they tried?

Wheaton really likes that site, and they're very happy together. And if you truly love him you should just move on and be happy... that he's happy. Don't ya think?

And Facebook bought the last startup to compete with it.

As far as wheaton goes... my completely uninformed opinion is that he moved from Fark to Suicide Girls... and well who can blame him for that?

On the other hand, I like the idea of a social network where I don't have to send the same message to everyone I know. I actually prefer Google+ to Facebook for that reason. Of course, nobody is on Google+, so there may be a lot to hate once you are actually using it.

They did something to the youtube login process a few days ago as well, though it seems to have been cleared up. Every time I logged in, I was prompted to add my cell-phone to my account, and when I refused, it returned an error page, though if I refreshed it showed I was logged in just fine. A rather typical internet attempt to intimidate the less savvy.

Given that this pissed Mr. Wheaton off, maybe someone should point him to This New York Times story linked here a few days ago. I was just naturally suspicious of Google's increasingly over-bearing attempts to force google-plus use and Total Communications Integration just because every site I've ever encountered that wanted to do that sort of thing always ended up having nefarious reasons for it. Seems like in this case my paranoia was more than justified. I've actually been reconsidering my gmail account since finding out that, for all their fine talk, google's been helping the US government illegal spy on all of us for years now.

I sometimes get the feeling social media projects use a very pyramid schemish funding model. Every user they get increases their server and storage costs, driving the need to get still more users to hit a specific profit target. I don't really know anything about business so this suspicion is probably far off base, but they certainly market themselves in a very similar way to those particular cons.

delathi: I still maintain that Google+ was the 2011 April Fools joke and some people just decided to run with it.

That was my thought as well. I do find it interesting that Google is somehow coercing or outright forcing folks to use Google+ by increasingly linking existing properties to it.

It's probably time to stop using Google altogether.

I think part of it might be that reddit is a larger community(visibility in important in the celeb business), and that with the collapsible comment system, you can choose which discussions you want to follow instead of scrolling through the entire thread to follow a specific conversation(meaning, for a guy like Wheaton, it's easier to avoid all the hate-rage the internet brings out). Also, as some people have alluded, Fark back in 2003-2007 or so was much rougher than it is today. There were more, younger people, which meant more hot-heads, and the options to filter and ignore weren't as robust as they are now. This meant that you generally had to deal with more internet assholery than today in all the tabs, and that going into Politics was like walking into a dive bar on a Friday night.

Facebook's already going down on its own. New joins are down and zombie accounts are up. I don't think it'll ever go away, but I think the social network thing has already seen its best days.

2012-05-03 09:30:08 AM
Already can't stand having to login to ANY social network to comment/participate/even access content.

FTA Neil Gaiman's comments: "I wish Google would leave the Social Network thing to others. When Google does what it does, and does it well, it changes the world. When it rides bandwagons, it's irritating.

I'm not on Google Plus, and I suppose that I won't be liking YouTube videos any longer."

What? All google does is "ride bandwagons". Search, Android, G+, G music, and I could go on all day....

Yeah, read some of the comments already posted. For a man whose motto is "don't be a dick" to hang at this place, whose motto is exactly the reverse almost 90% of the time seems to be a bit odd, frankly.

Why are you logged in to your facebook account while you're trawling for porn? I admit that it's an annoying thing for them to include, but this is basic identity compartmentalization stuff just like having numerous email accounts and never giving your actual birthdate to a website.
