The Karen people are wonderful and this is an important (though largely symbolic) victory for them. I've had many Karen students who were either born in refugee camps or fled there as young children. They and their families are survivors of another genocide that was never really on the outside world's radar.

Everyone wants a piece of Burma now, though once again China got the jump on the rest of the world.

A precursor to the liberalization currently going on in Burma was some significant pullback from Burma's ties to China. Last year, Burma abruptly halted development of a hydroelectric dam that was meant to generate power for China. China was not happy.

Thanks. I have seen Full Metal Jacket, but I did not make the connection because I always assumed that the pronunciation for her name was "SOO-ki-YE". That clears things up tremendously.

The real test will come during the next general elections.

Since her party is still very much a minority, they don't have any real power. However what happens when her party takes the majority (a task made much harder by the 25% guaranteed seats to the military, but far from impossible given her overwhelming support)?

The military government will then be forced to choose between stepping aside gracefully and retaining a small measure of authority, or doing a repeat of 1990 and completely tanking the country's international image and potentially setting off a civil war.
