From the comments:

"We saw an octopus near the same area in a death fight with a seal. The octopus appeared to be gaining the upper hand."

I really want to see that.

Shouldn't it be called "birding" instead of "fishing"?

I have to be honest here, those are the second coolest photos of a giant Pacific octopus fishing for and eating a seagull I've seen today.

Lesbian Seagull by E. Humperdinck
To my little nest by the sea
With me that's where you belong with me
I know I can be strong when you're with me
She skims the water
At the new time to seek
Her fish and she emerges
With one squirming in her beak

She plays among the waves
And hides between the swells
She walks the beach at twilight

Searching for some shells
Come with me

She initially wanted to intercede and save the bird because she didn't want to watch it die. But it was impossible to safely get down to the lower level of the breakwater.

Let nature run its course, dummy.

Is that all the bigger a 'giant' octopus gets? I was pretty underwhelmed. I was expecting something that would put the fear of Cthulthu in me, not that dinky thing...

Octopi are a hell of a lot smarter than flying rat gulls, too. I have to give my sympathy to intelligence here and hope the octopus enjoyed its meal.

Full grown they can reach nine feet across. They're the only thing in the waters here that have the ability to hurt a human.

I dive at that breakwater all the time, I've seen a fair number of them. Nothing this cool though.

Good thing for the eagle that's a juvenile octopus or that eagle would be the om nom nom. I wonder if giant octopuses use their tentacles like bate to lure unsuspecting schoolgirls birds within eating distance?

If it enjoyed eating a rat gull it's not all that smart.

If it used the thing for crab bait OTHO......

On one hand, I hate seagulls and think they are disgusting, filthy pests. On the other hand, I really enjoy eating octopus. Verdict: I would have a tough time eating an octopus I knew had eaten a seagull.

Coustou knew how to interfere with nature without sounding like a wussy soccer mom. I remember watching one of his documentaries as a kid. He was filming the classic mass hatching of baby sea turtles when, as always happens, a huge flock of gulls bent on massacre descended on the hapless turts. Coustou had his crew break out shotguns and blast the farkers out of the sky while the little fellows made their escape, much to my delight.

Sometimes ya gotta say, "Fark nature!" Those feathered poop dispensers will not be missed.

Morneau has fast reactions because she's a stayat-home mom.

Why is she wasting her time strolling the shore in search of killer octopi then?

She should be tending net in the NHL.

The only thing I can come up with is that her toddlers are racing around the house like pinballs and she has to be quick on her feet to keep them from hopping into the oven when she's not looking. Or something.

I'm pretty sure that's what it was doing. It looks like the octo was sitting under the surface with one tentacle up looking like a delicious peckable thing. Seagull lands nearby, takes a nibble, and then, as the saying goes, we've seen enough hentai to know where that was going.

An octopus is clever. A herd of them is an unstoppable foe that shows no mercy.

The waters here, in what you would call the Pacific Northwest. We do get some 6-gill sharks here, but they don't have very big mouths.

A GPO will take down and eat a GWS. Check out the youtube video for "shark vs. octopus".

I guess an orca could get you, but that would be intensely improbable.

I believe the proper term for a group of octopuses is hentai. A hentai of octopuses.

Ideally, the octopus would have consumed the seagull, then the eagle would have consumed the octopus, then some lucky bastard would have baked eagullpus that night.

Good for the octopus, one less flying sea-rat. I once saw a seagull attack and eat a pigeon it was pretty brutal.
