RumsfeldsReplacement: It's almost as if a lifetime of being subjected to brain damage can cause someone to be depressed and commit suicide. I wonder if there's a connection.....

/ in all seriousness, American football as we know it will not exist 20 years from now
// it will only take one winning lawsuit, and yes, it's coming

That's the reason the nfl set aside a bigger portion of the tv money they got from the lockout last year. Its all for concussion lawsuits.

The demand will never go away.
The supply of people who will watch and pay to watch will never go away.
The supply of people willing to injure themselves for millions of dollars will never go away.
The advertising/TV money will never go away.
The people making money will not let that happen.

PowerSlacker: I love how we've talked this story almost all the way out before ESPN even acknowledges it, much less before they waste their next four hours of airtime on it.

Bingo!

So they'll just avoid talking about it until this afternoon, and make the "wise" decision to preempt Dan LeBatard's show.

Scott Van Pelt just said on his show ESPN is waiting on confirmation, but they're aware of a shooting.

Self inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, via TMZ.

I think the league has been horribly backward on the issue but people kill themselves every day - one cannot automagically assume this is CTE related. Good chance of it, sure.

2012-05-02 03:00:31 PM
ESPN on TV is mentioning finally right now

2012-05-02 03:00:36 PM
Well now ESPN mentions it, just as SportsCenter ends.

JustGetItRight: DamnYankees: GWSuperfan: Some of the local news is saying it's a suicide. IDK- Junior's a nice guy. I'm tempted to run down to the coffeeshop and see if anyone has heard anything.

I don't see how it would be a suicide if multiple shots were fired.

I've responded to an attempted suicide with multiple shots fired. She shot herself too high and at a bad angle the first time and thus only managed to break her collarbone.

Did a better job with the second round but still missed her heart and survived.

Wait, was this idiot trying to off herself by shooting herself in the CHEST?

Butterfinger: I think Jon Stewart has something on this already too.

Jonathan Vilma banned for the season.

If you're not making money NOW, then ESPN isn't interested in exploiting you.

Too busy with pretend hot girl bloggers.

aquigley: He shot to the chest so they could do more CTE studies on his brain, just like Dave Duerson.

This is hardly surprising, this is going to sink the NFL's legal defense I'd wager.

WhyteRaven74: Cyberluddite: he's the 8th member of the Chargers' Super Bowl team from the 1994 season to die.

Shiat, I know I remember there were a couple others but now I'm trying to think of who they all were.

According to this

*Linebacker Lew Bush succumbed to a heart attack at age 42
*Linebacker David Griggs died in a Florida car crash in 1995, less than five months after Super Bowl 29.
*Running back Rodney Culver and his wife were among the casualties in the 1996 ValuJet crash that plunged into the Everglades. The couple left behind two children and 110 in all died on the doomed flight.
*In a sad/twisted irony, linebacker Doug Miller died at 28 after being struck by lightning twice during a Colorado camping trip in 1998.
*Offensive lineman Curtis Whitney died a day after his 39th birthday from a drug overdose.
*Defensive lineman Chris Mims died at age 39 in 2008 due to an enlarged heart.
*Defensive end Shawn Lee passed away earlier this year at age 44 due to heart problems/diabetes.

People try to commit suicide by shooting themselves in the chest? That's...dumb.

All the freaking time. I've never looked to see if anyone's done scientific studies about it, but EMT lore is that women choose the the chest more often than men and do so to allow for an open casket funeral.

In my personal experiences, I've only been to a couple of female suicides by GSW and both were to the chest. I've been to a lot more suicides by males, and they do usually involve GSWs to the head but I have seen one that shot himself in the chest.

Yea, up earlier I posted a link. Someone did do a study and males were nearly twice as likely to use a method that disfigured the head or face.
Link again for anyone who missed it

ESPN is saying a shooting with multiple unconfirmed reports he's dead.

I see USA Today, LA Times, Huffington Post confirming dead, and several NFL players, including OchoCinco being sad saying dead.

Now ESPN talking about bounties.

Zombie Hitler: Someone people cared about killed themselves. If it was a farker it would be the biggest tragedy on the planet, but because it's not, it's funny. There's never a point when (alleged) suicide is funny.

Another (more local than the U-T) local paper story: Link

If that story is accurate, I think I know the person that found him.

2012-05-02 03:03:12 PM

PowerSlacker: Rising From Ashes: I'm reading "dead from self-inflicted ginshot to the chest"

So the Dave Duerson comparision sounds accurate. Save the brain from science.

I didn't even know that Seau had shot himself in the chest when I submitted the link.

I swear I have an alibi.

Are you a wizard?

you could say Junior kicked the Seau.

Not necessarily true. That may be how he did it. And that may be why he did it that way if true. But as the other guy pointed out, dudes who never played football been shooting themselves in the chest for a long time. Unless there's a note and even if there is we don't know squat until they look at the brain.

Agreed. Hope he left a note about that too, describing any symptoms. Problem is, we never see suicide notes, not sure why -- we'd be a lot more informed public if we knew what was driving some of these people.

Yeah.... remember, the NFL makes just short of $5 billion/yr on national TV rights revenue alone. So, yes, a bunch of lawsuits would be troublesome to the NFL. But, it will have to reach 100s of players winning $10 million+ each in court before it would actually "take down" the NFL.

Some people want to kill themselves without destroying their head, so they'll have a corpse that can be seen in a casket.
Some people also think their heart is in the upper left portion of their chest and subsequently miss the real location, which is closer to the middle of the chest than the left side.

A San Diego TV station had video footage of Seau's mother weeping in the driveway of the house, but I guess that's not confirmation enough.

he wrote in his suicide note that he was donating his brain to science to see the effects of football hits on the brain because he thinks thats what caused his deep depression

is this true?

There are other reports that it was a wound to the head. I've seen both reported.

I hope there's a note in either case, always wonder what it is that troubles people so.

That 1994 Chargers team never got enough credit. Yes, the 49ers made 'em Seau in the Super Bowl, but I think the fate would have been the same for ever other AFC team.
