Gunny Highway: Pray 4 Mojo: Sure he was... most people are.

Either way... he wanted to be dead, and now he is. Don't see why that should make me sad... or respectful...

If anything, I'm happy for him... he achieved a goal.

People are usually saddened by the situation, curious as to why it happened, and sympathetic towards the family that lost a loved one.

/Im sure I am being "trolled" but these threads are very confusing to me.

Not trolling... not intentionally at least.

My feelings about the situation are exactly what a "normal" person would feel if he had run off to do something else he wanted to do with is life (new chick, new country, new family... whatever), and in the process, abandoned his family and friends... and never had any contact with them again.

Sigh, guess I gotta do it myself:

Lt. Cheese Weasel: Gunny Highway: I am totally confused by people who can say "good" after heading about someone's death. It just does not make sense to me.

A username is meaningless.

Someone people cared about killed themselves. If it was a farker it would be the biggest tragedy on the planet, but because it's not, it's funny. There's never a point when (alleged) suicide is funny.

The hypocrisy here always amuses me. The more famous the person the less they're worth. I say be consistent - death is always funny or never funny.

I wonder what will happen when a celebrity farker dies. Will that be like dividing by zero?

JustGetItRight: Much like racing had to adopt HANS devices to address basilar skull fractures and other closed head injuries, football's going get a redesigned helmet with some type of airbag effect. Once that happens, the concussion issue's going to mostly disappear.

Great, so football players won't get their skulls crushed in. I didn't know that was a problem but whatever.

hulk hogan meat shoes: RumsfeldsReplacement: It's almost as if a lifetime of being subjected to brain damage can cause someone to be depressed and commit suicide. I wonder if there's a connection.....

/ in all seriousness, American football as we know it will not exist 20 years from now
// it will only take one winning lawsuit, and yes, it's coming

The demand will never go away.
The supply of people who will watch and pay to watch will never go away.
The supply of people willing to injure themselves for millions of dollars will never go away.
The advertising/TV money will never go away.
The people making money will not let that happen.

Demand won't go away? Ask boxing how that works.

Supply of people to watch? Again, see boxing. Or horse racing.

Supply of people willing to injure themselves? Now that's an interesting one. Sure, someone will always take some cash for putting themselves into harms way. From pro sports to bumfights. The question is, who and how many? The NFL is a culmination of a vast feeder system from the entire US from college down to pee-wee. So sure, some 21 year old could very well sign any waiver put in front of him and say he'll take the risk for cash to play in the NFL. How about that 18 year old on the bubble to make a college team? Is he going to do it? How about that 14 year old thinking about going out for high school varsity? How about that parent deciding on whether their 10-12 yr old son should even put on pads in the first place? Are there going to be takers? Of course. But what does that cumulative effect have on the NFL product we know today? Less kids start playing rec or pee-wee leagues, less kids make it to high school, less college athletes, less of a pool for the NFL. And not just less...a worse pool. Not every star athlete will choose football. Star athletes usually are good in many things. They could go play lacrosse. They could go play basketball, or baseball or just about anything else. And what if rec leagues for kids start to shut down over liability issues? Diving boards are almost a thing of the past due to insurance reasons, what do you think the full knowledge that playing 20 years of football will result in your players having a 3X risk (choose your own number, it doesn't really matter) of suicidal depression will do? What if high schools start shutting down the football program? It just snow balls until they only people willing to play NFL football are the desperate.

Advertising money? That could dry up in a minute if football is labeled as a barbaric sport that isn't attracting the best athletes anymore. Dog fighting still exists in places. I'm sure football will too..

The people making money will always be the people making money. They'll just find something else to make their money on.

Ray_Peranus:

.... Violent? I'm assuming you're talking about the spats with his girlfriend. But I'm sure anyone who's been in a real relationship will tell you you've never been in love if you've never thought about going five across the eye on your old lady from time to time. Strike three is that was not a troll comment so that's really how shallow, pretentious, and un-evolved as a human you really are.

:(

Yeah, the little "spats" that led to his arrest. Yeah, those are the ones I'm talking about. I've been married nearly 11 years and together with the same man for nearly 15. I've had 2 kids with him. I'd say I'm pretty familiar with being in love, and I'm very familiar with spats. I've never called the police on my husband. I've never been arrested. He's never been arrested. We've never driven off cliffs or endangered others in the process. Yes. I stand by my initial judgement: Another violent douche-bag who hates women enough that at least one of them was in fear enough to call the police on him. That's not love. That's not a "spat." That's just another piece of trash being trashy. Why will fans never admit that just because their little hero throws a ball, he could never possibly be anything other than a glowing angel of moral perfection who deserves billions of dollars and praise showered down upon his righteous self? Well, my "shallow and pretentious" self will be looking out for others in the meantime, whether it be on the road or getting battered friends/neighbors/co-workers some help. According to you, I haven't evolved to the point of physical spousal abuse. Yeah, umm, no thanks. If that's human evolution (lulz r u srs?!), I'll just continue being a simple cave-girl, and I'll be thankful this guy's last mistake was suicide and not homicide.

the biggest redneck here: JorgiX: hdhale: EnderWiggnz: hdhale: EnderWiggnz:
How on earth could the NFL pass an OSHA inspection? Armored wankball should go the fark away and only be talked about with onions on our belts.

Better question how do Boxing and MMA continue to pass OSHA inspection? At least American football players wear gear designed to protect them from hits, unlike Boxing and MMA which wear protective gear so they can protect the hands of the fighter allowing them to hit more often.

Let's also not talk about Rugby and Australian rules football, which have no protective gear and the players can hit each other just as hard as in any American football game.

I'm sorry you find contact sports to be barbaric, but the world is a contact sport. So in reality they only reflect real life.

/played American football from elementary school through high school and never got more than a couple of cool scars

Boxing is barbaric and needs to go away as well, not only out of safety concerns, but because of the pure corruption in the sport. Like the late great Smoking Joe said, the promoter gets paid, the venue gets paid, everyone makes money, except the boxer. MMA rules are such that there's LESS of a chance of injury than boxing. Mind you, i spar kickbox and compete in NAGA bjj. If you get injured during either of those, its YOUR fault because you did something wrong. Football? Every single game someone loses their career.

Cool scars, eh? what about those times you got your bell rung... think that's going to affect you?

as for the no-pads version of contact sports, well... they actually have a lower rate of injury because they dont have a hard candy shell with which to attack the other players with.

Soccer/"real" football was a thugdriven sport pre 1970'ish, and they cleaned their act up. There's no reason that you need to watch gladiators risk life and limb for your entertainment on sundays.

Boxing is and always was a corrupt sport behind the scenes. The ironic part is that b ...

Where the fark do you get your info from? I interact with some of these guys on a fairly regular basis and they make way less than their boxing counterparts in most cases. Seriously dude it's not even close. And let me tell you why else your argument is flawed:

-You mention only the top fighters in boxing are making money yet you counter with one of the top earners in MMA (Jon Jones) who is still making way less than someone in that tier in boxing. Factor in advertising money which is greater in MMA and you still don't get close.
-Many foreign fighters in boxing (especially Mexicans and Brits) get extra money for TV rights in their respective nations. No way in hell Zuffa would allow that.
-Please notice I said "MMA fighters" not "UFC fighters" as you probably know the vast majority (and I mean HUGE) are not in any way associated with Zuffa. That is what they shoot for but until then it's getting beat up for chump change, and while boxers in that tier don't make great money I can guarantee you it's much better money. Again, it isn't even close.

Not to get all ITG but go to your nearest gym (most are mixed between disciplines) and ask the pros for each sport how much they make. But it's ok man, when you don't know crap about what you're talking about it's natural to resort to ad hominem attacks. I'm used to that kind of biatch move from you, attack my intelligence when you don't have anything coherent to say which says more about your own intelligence than mine.

2012-05-02 09:31:33 PM

It doesn't mean he didn't have any, but the late, great Junior Seau never was listed on an NFL Injury report as having a concussion.

It would certainly reduce concussions from big hits in my opinion , though you'd [probably pick some up from the unprotected head as well. Wouldn't completely stop the CTE though. They'd still be slamming into each other on the line every play, which sloshes the brain around quite nicely with no head contact at all.

Does that resonate better?
