In Oceanside & being bothered by the helicopter hovering overhead so i'm getting a kick...

no seriously, how about landing at the local air strip and drive down to his house, maybe save a bit in gas costs? maybe? huh?

ESPN is obviously waiting for OFFICIAL confirmation and also probably putting all their packages and scripts together, as it's obvious he's dead at this point.

Seau was involved in a car accident back in 2010 when he drove his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA hours after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Seau later said he was not trying to kill himself ... insisting he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The man was fighting some inner demons me thinks. Could be head trauma and 'roids contributed, maybe not. Very sad regardless. Excellent player back in the day.

I got into an argument with the NBC affiliate out of Albany, GA, about when this story was confirmed vs. when this story was first reported. Them: "TMZ didn't even confirm this 45 minutes ago." Me: "I don't trust TMZ any further than I can throw it, so I went to the ABC affiliate out of San Diego itself as soon as I heard."

Oh WALB, your derp will never cease to amaze me, even a thousand miles away from you.

WTF Indeed: This will not be good for the NFL brain damage lawsuits that are currently in the courts. The NFL will have to pay out A LOT of money soon.

Don't see the causal connection. Anectdotal but not causal.

I really don't care for ESPN's constantly-updating comment feed. It actually makes it hard to read with the comments jumping around constantly. It should update every minute or something - give me a chance to read a few comments that have already been posted.

SoCalSurfer: Yeah, no one expected them to upset the steelers that year

I didn't expect it, but I wasn't surprised, either. Good power inside power running game, QB who throws a good 15-25 out perfectly. Stillurhs didn't get better against those the next year, and it showed against Dallas.

//99 Rams would have turned those mid-90s Steelers teams into mincemeat.

Probably the biggest sports celeb I've met.*
I met him at Dini's by the sea in Carlsbad about a week before Super bowl XXX.
He invited me and my crew of 5, and about 10 other guys at the bar to go down the street to play a pick up game that evolved into kill the man with the ball.
I was sore for days.

*I think he outranks Clete Boyer on the famous scale.

Very sad story.

FreakinB: muck4doo: I don't get it. Why would someone with a HOF career, loads of money, hot babes wanting him, and fame commit suicide? Us schmuck fans don't have any of that, but we're not sitting there offing ourselves.

If the cause that people are guessing is correct, then it's the same reason that people can still have anxiety and depression even when they seem to have it all: A messed up brain is a messed up brain. No amount of money, fame, etc. can fix that.

i have a deep sympathy for depressed people with regards to suicide, but somehow, i suspect that his body being in constant pain from the constant beatings it received during his career, including both concussions and other physical injuries he suffered during his play time.

i'm a hardcore migraineur, and believe me, I've thought of going all Pi on myself when I'm in the middle of a 6 week banger. If he was looking at another 30-40 years of excruciating pain along with increased risk of parkinsons (or already suffering from parkinsons), I don't think that the usual "depression" assumption holds water.

And for those of you saying that they're afraid that the NFL may have to change/go away. GOOD. It should. It causes permanent physical damage to an incredibly large amount of the population, from pee-wee league through the NFL.

How on earth could the NFL pass an OSHA inspection? Armored wankball should go the fark away and only be talked about with onions on our belts.

Oceanside has a small marina/harbor no real bay to speak of, his house must be just south of the pier (or near the pier)

dletter: So far I'm only seeing this on TMZ (not on ESPN yet)... but, if TMZ blows this, that will be a pretty big goof on their part, so, I'll assume they have some sort of inside police source that they are putting a scoop out on.

If this does prove to be a suicide, this will be the one that really gets peoples attention if it gets pinned back to head trauma issues like Duerson's did. Not that Dave Duerson wasn't a sad example, but, he didn't have the level of fame Seau did.

Yup. I've been saying it for the past few years: these guys are actual celebrities now, so when they start going full Duerson or getting on TV and talking like they've got a mouth full of marbles in their 40's the reaction the general public will have is going to be pretty stark. Seau played recently enough to fit into that mold, but he's just the first of many to come.
